My best guess was they were booing umpires for not giving them a 50 against Petty.

I thought that was a pretty bad non-decision late in the game, but certainly didn't cost them the game.

I thought if the WC player had backed off, then the ball wouldn't have ended up under Petty.

Adjudicated fairly. Let the defensive player stand up, before wrestling for the ball.

Would have been hard done by if 50 I reckon.

They were both pushing the rules.

Yeo did it to Pickett right on the half time siren

Yep. This exactly. And Yeo kept shaking his head, like the coathanger he gave Kozzie, as the umpire in fact called it, just somehow didn’t happen. Gobsmacking.

I really thought Petty was pushing his luck, I think your being very kind. Personally I thought it was 50, but they got some bizarre free kicks in the last quarter to I’d say it evened up.

He just went back and slotted a beautiful fifty metre goal on the siren.

That 50m zone is where we need Pickett to shine in the finals; he has the nouse and the pace to extract himself from congestion to find a space in a good, heads-up defender's push forward. Could be very dangerous as he can obviously kick 'em from thereabouts. Hunt and Harmes may develop this capacity in their gamestyles to hit the bloke on the chest coming towards them.

On the bus back from the game, there were quite a few Melbourne supporters and we all sang the team song. Of course we were loud but good natured. I was sitting near the front when two older WC women supporters got off. They said to the bus driver “ just to let you know, there are aggressive people back there, keep an eye on them”.

Kennedy goaled from two frees that were ridiculous

1. A bump from May when he was running with the flight of the ball - front on contact - you're kidding - whats May supposed to do? Let him have a free run at it?

2. The mark by Rivers that wasn't paid and adjudged a push was wrong and pathetic.

The deliberate against Brayshaw who was kicking a slippery ball on his left foot

The deliberate against Lever that bounced backwards(!!) and then across the line

The Spargo Play on.

Petty was bumped out of a contest in the goal square when the ball was 15m away

There were dozens. Nicholls is a disgrace to the game and should never umpire again.

Ben Brown being held on to when going for a mark was the biggest miss for me.

Same. Darling played it all wrong. If he had of just got back off the mark and made Petty give him back the ball . Instead he wanted to wrestle and IMO contributed to both players going to ground and then wanted to push petty to get the ball giving the umpire an out to not pay teh 50 as Darling was contributing to the hold up.

Just the first quarter alone. Jackson denied a clear mark 25m out from goal is one that sticks in my mind. There were plenty, we definitely got the rough end of it which makes it even funnier to hear their whining.

They are actually my most hated team only slightly below Essendon

I’m of Irish Catholic background and hate them more than I hate Glasgow Rangers

A small group of Dees fans, including my family, did exactly the same after a game at the SCG a few years ago.  The Swans fans accepted it in good humour, as was intended.  The only problem was that the Swans had belted us. I wonder if they would have been so good natured if we had won.

I was thinking why eagles fans and port and crows fans are so vocal.

Im guessing that as that both SA and WA only have a couple of teams in the comp each, it is more of a them against us feeling.

its much more parochial than Melb and probably more like how it used to be a long time ago with suburb v suburb.,

Probably right there Deever.....

I certainly know Adelaide supporters will barrack for anyone else other than Port.  And as a "created" club, like the Eagles, they have no affilitation with any previous clubs in the local competition.

Likewise if you live in Perth I imagine you couldn't barrack for any team associated with Fremantle i.e. North or South Fremantle or Subiaco. Which just leave the Eagles.....

Pickett and Oliver spend way to much time wrestling with their oppostion. Both gave away uneccessary frees .

Just focus on getting the pill

When a player wins a free like Darling and wants to grab the ball - and then Petty tries to hold up play by grabbing the ball and stopping Darling getting the ball I have to say Petty should have been pinged.

In the context of the game 5 mins to go and the free kick count 10 to 2 since the restart they probably thought it best not to call it.

He's a beauty alright. He must have kicked that goal into the breeze too as it was the non scoring end I think.

It was So important to us at that point. Nailing goal kicking opportunities may make us or break us in September.

I love Pickett's toughness, chasing and pressure just as much as his offensive skills. I think he'll develop into the best small forward in the league.

Agree, seemed like BBB tackled to the ground, taken out of contest, and you then compare the Rivers mark minor bump out to Darling that gets paid!

The terrible umpiring just made it an even better win!

  • I look forward to another 3 x possession Vardy special, again. To add to his overflowing 3 possession trophy cabinet.

Prophetic :)

The Spargo Play on.

The Spargo play on is the one that continues to amaze me after watching the vision again and again. The time difference between the whistle and the play on was minimal. It gave Spargo no time at all to assess the fact that he had been paid the mark and there seemed to be nothing to indicate that he was doing anything other than going back to take a shot at goal.

Worse decision in a game where many poor calls were made.

Was that Nicholls?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
