I really hope the author of the article was raised in the US. Otherwise there's no excuse for having used the word "acclimated" instead of "acclimatised".

The signing of King and possibly Andrew is why I believe Dew will be coaching Gold Coast in 2023. He's gradually putting the building blocks together. (I expect Clarkson will be made a Godfather offer to bring Tasmania's AFL team into the competition. It's perfect for him - big dollars, he's well known in Tassie already and he doesn't have to fear failure. He doesn't have to win another Premiership. All he has to do is make them a competitive team in quick time.)

I have thought this for a while too.

In the meantime the Hawks are paying him for this year while he refreshes.

Unless the club are quietly telling players Clarkson will be coaching next year, helping convince them to sign up

How much would you pay for an untried player like Mac Andrew who is presumably not going to play this year (and possibly next year)? What’s he worth?

The Suns picked him at number 5, one ahead of Josh Rachele who kicked 5 goals on debut for Adelaide on Sunday.

Agree but Tassie won't come in for 5 years (when the new stadium in Hobart is built and to give clubs time to prepare for compromised drafts) so maybe Clarko coaches another club before Tassie!

Has that 5 year time-line been stated anywhere? I would otherwise have thought it would be 3 years from now (ie, season 2025) when they would be in the AFL. 2024 would have the team playing in the VFL (or equivalent) while 2023 would be a development year where the new Tassie team gets to put its playing list together.

I never understood why Gold Coast and GWS had different processes for establishment, but the AFL would have learned a lot through those processes and should know the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches.

Going forward a few years this is going to make an interesting topic.

Gold Coast used what was effectively its only real draft pick (No. 5) to draft Big Mac.

Adelaide went for Joshua Rachele with pick No. 6. Hawthorn got Josh Ward with No 6 and Josh Gibcus went to Richmond for No 9. A few others have already played for their AFL teams. Andrew has yet to play and still looks very light for AFL. Will he make it?

One way to look at it is may be he'll be the best of the lot.

Hard to measure after four rounds in year one. Many of us thought after winning the Rising Star Rhys Palmer was the bees knees.

GC are desperate for talls. They have time.

It took Max Gawn two years to debut and six years to find his feet. Many here queried whether he'd make it.

Poor decision, they need to be making waves 6 days from now, not six years, doubt if they’ll be in the league in six year's.

Will also be interesting to see how he stacks up against our draftees from last year.  If we were allowed to bid for him at Pick 5, would we have had to give up Pick 19 (VanRooyen) and 39 (Howes)?

Good luck to the lad.

I do giggle at some of the comments written on here having trawled back.

Some were fairly certain that he would;

1. Not play an AFL game in his 1st or 2nd year of footy due to how skinny he was.

2. Certainty to head back to Victoria after his contract is up.

Well he's now proven a few doubters on here wrong by making his debut and signing a contract extension. Who would have thought.

I agree with the good luck wishes but it wasn’t just people here who said he wouldn’t play for the first two years of his career, it was nearly every recruiter, including the club that recruited him and most of the draft “experts”. And it wasn’t just how skinny he was (although that was part of it) - it was because he was a very raw talent who needed the time to develop. Kudos to the Gold Coast coaches if they’ve managed to fast track his development in less than a season.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
