Football commentary does my head in.

I can't stand it any longer.

So I've decided to start a thread so I have somewhere to vent my frustration about the standard of football commentary each week.

The alternative is going crazy.

I watched the game with the sound turned off last night and it was the best commentary I’ve heard in years.

But I totally hear you binman. Luke Darcy calling Jimmy Jordon “Jordon Jones” multiple times in a game earlier in the season was a low point for me when I didn’t think we could sink any lower. Surely rule #1 is, know the players’ names.

I mentioned this last night but Jobe Watson was praising our off season recruitment of Ed Langdon last summer.

I will say though that Justin Leppitsch has been a good appointment and is light yeas ahead of the other special commentators in the Ch 7 stable. 

Random lowlight from the Channel 7 coverage of the Port game last night THAT DID MY HEAD IN #1:

Fritter thinks he has touched a ball, because he did, that Alir is paid a mark for. So assuming it is play on Fritter tackles Alir. Much to fritters dismay, the umpire gives a 50. Which was fair enough as a mark was called.  

The commentators say as much. Play on. Nothing to see here.

Later, Kossie takes a nice mark. It may have been touched. Jonas  certainly thought so and tackled Kossie. Much to Jonas' dismay, the umpire gives a 50. Which was fair enough as a mark was called.  

The commentators express amazement and surprise.

Watching THE REPLAY, which provided crystal clear evidence the 50 was there every day of the week, 'Hamish" opines Jonas was hard done by. WTF

DOES MY HEAD IN!!!! 

Leppa is outstanding.  A great footy brain.  A shame he'll be back on a coaching panel soon

I always listen to the commentary muted but gave it a go last night because BT wasn't commenting.

I'm glad i did because Justin Leppitsch was excellent. Worth putting up with the other nuffies if he's involved.

AFLW commentary was very good this year as well. None of the hyperbolic BS you get with the mens commentary

I know we've watched them enough to tell the difference, but commentators always seem to get Hunt/Langdon mixed up in the heat of the moment

It's mostly just the same trash, over and over. Leppitsch was great last night and I love listening to Daisy's insights - I just hope she doesn't become corrupted, trying to fit into the mould of the simpletons who are still living in the 'good old days'.

Or Tmac gets penalised as a player falls over.

Same happened with us and Brayshaw the commentator...correct call.

I do detect some bias but who cares whrn we keep winning.

Just makes it sweeter.

The best special commentators on Seven are (in no order) Leppitsch, Watson, Bartel, Pearce and Hodge. They all have one thing in common. They're all only recently out of the game (or still even involved). It shows that the passage of time makes other callers redundant because they don't understand the finer points of the way the game is played today.

I like Matthew Richardson as a person. His goofy style is engaging. But he and Carey (who you will notice I haven't said I like) are too long retired to be valuable as commentators any more.

BT is obviously a boofhead and James Brayshaw's sshtick is well past its use by date. for me though the most beige and banal commentator is Cameron Ling. For the type of player he was I would have assumed a forthright, no nonsense style. He's the exact opposite. I've never heard a single insight pass his lips

I lost all respect for Cameron Ling (and Simon Black for that matter) the first time I saw that Cash Converters ad. Has to be up there with the most disgraceful sell-out of a modern footballer I've ever seen. Also it's just a woeful ad regardless of who is in it.

That was baffling. Obviously our 50 was a more important reward but it was the same circumstances one after another and they acted like it just hadn’t happened.

That was James Brayshaw. His quote was ‘he slipped so it doesn’t matter’. I chocked on my whisky when he said that. Couldn’t believe what I heard.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Eddie yet. To me, he is the worst of them all, by a long way. 

Did anyone catch the fox footy pre game where David king said alir alir would know Ben brown really well (mistaking him for Majak), and then doubled down and said it again after the ad break? Cringe

Eddie has some technical chops and a decent grasp of the English language, he threatens to be a good commentator. But then you notice he’s red lining it 12 minutes in to the first quarter. Then he’ll be barracking for one side for an odd reason. And then tops it off with reading texts from his famous mates on air.

I have been doing that for a while Nasher. Especially when Brian is involved..
