Hilarious. Good if we wanted to be the Saints or Blues.

i don't know why we'd be chasing blokes who can't make their current side

if we're chasing maynard then there's obviously some wiggle room in our salary cap, so i'd rather target:

  1. brayden maynard (filth)
  2. adam cerra (freo)
  3. karl amon (pear)
  4. ben king (gc17)
  5. izak rankine (gc17)

That list doesn't exactly whet the appetite. We can do much better

Would love Trent Dumont on the opposing wing to Langdon. Hasn’t played much this year due to injury, but his past few years he showed a lot playing as an outside midfielder in a [censored] team (North). Watched him closely as I drafted him in a work fantasy league haha. If we could get him cheap, we should definitely do it.

The rest of that list is a hard pass.

You can already tell Rankine is a lazy player, but if we think his attitude would turn in our environment, then he'd add an extra exciting dimension to our forwardline. Really not sure he'd fit into our pressure set up though.

I'd definitely target Ben King though.

rankine has a huge amount of talent, just needs someone to harness it and make him work

Would love Maynard. Why does Amon want to leave? The rest are on too much money. I wouldn't mind Richards from the dogs.

These type of discussions are pointless but amusing. Here's how it goes:

An article is released suggesting we go after some role-players, because we're about to hit the cap in a year or two.

Supporter base dismisses suggestions because they'd rather just sign the best available players.

Here's a realistic challenge - name some upcoming free agents that would be useful but aren't going to cost 600k+.

It's the moves that lift the quality of our bottom 6-10 players without losing any top talent, that will make the biggest difference. For the most part, anything that happens at the top end is going to require us to lose significant talent to facilitate the move.

amon wanted to come home to victoria two years ago but ultimately decided to stay

the reason why maynard should be our #1 target is that he's a pre-agent

we've adjusted various contracts over the last few years - big extensions for petracca, salem, lever, gawn, viney, harmes - and given that there was talk we were super keen on zerrett and now there's talk that we have been into maynard for some time i would say it's extremely likely that we have a fair bit of salary cap space cleared out as a result, especially with the likes of jones, jetta, and hibberd coming to the end of their contracts

i think it's worth remembering that jetta signed a new contract as a prospective free agent in the wake of an all oztrayan season; he wouldn't be on chump change

Interesting, you are correct, I didn't realise Jetta re-signed in 2017

Tom Morris reporting that Suns eager to find a partner in crime for Ben King. They have pick 3 on offer and also 2 top of second round picks.

Weid is definitely not worth pick 3 but given they are after experience, who could make way with Weid to get Pick 3 plus one of their 2nd round picks in exchange. The Suns need legitimate experience so someone who could impart good training standards and still have a few years of football left in them.

I've scanned the list and there really isnt much we can offer them. Doubtful that Jones and/or Jetta would attract any attention. Hard to see anyone wanting to leave as well given our progression. But if I was forced to put up some options that fit the Suns needs I would look at one of Hibbo, Brayshaw, Harmes or Melksham.

We could then use both of our 2nd round picks to bring in Maynard and still have pick 3 to either take to the draft or cash in on another high profile trade.

I think these are pretty fair assumptions and there very well may be room for a decent player but having a bit of wiggle room is also important.

We're going to have Oliver's contract to sort soon (which will likely be something similar to Petracca), then Rivers, Jackson, and Pickett will make significantly more than they do now.

I'm confident the club knows what it's doing but going after the big fish year after year could land us in Collingwood's situation.

That said, I'd also love to add Maynard.

I can't see GC taking this on with pick 3 even in the conversation. They recently got rid of Peter Wright for close to nothing. I would say that Wright was shown more than Weid's during his career. For pick 3 they would want someone mid 20's who has shown more maybe a Harry McKay or Naughton (they'll probably have to sweeten the deal). What will probably happen is they over offer a declining power forward and get them in under FA (Tmac might actually be a target, Tex, Kennedy, Riewoldt, Hawkins type).

TMac is definately a better fit, but i would struggle to see how we would let him go ahead of Weid. He would have to request the trade, which he may very well do.

Weid is not worth pick 3 for sure, hence why we would have to sweeten the deal. 2 players for Pick 3 + 2nd or 3rd rounder is probably a more worthwhile discussion. Something like:

Weid + Brayshaw for Pick 3 + 2nd Rounder, Or Weid + Melksham for Pick 3 + 3rd rounder Or Weid + ANB for Pick 3 and 3rd rounder

With the question marks still on BBB, i just cannot see how we would even entertain letting TMac go... This may well change between now and end of season though.

I think Weid would be worth a 3rd rounder at most, Wright went for a 4th round. At this stage, he's probably worth more to us than anyone else (kinda like TMac last year). Packaging him up role players doesn't get to pick 3 let alone another pick. Only way I can see it happening is if Weid is being added as steaknives. Or those suggestions, Weid + Brayshaw might get us a late first rounder.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
