The gap between our best and worst is far too big. I watch a game and I can tell 5 mins in whether we've 'come to play' or not. That shouldn't happen. Yesterday, I could tell almost immediately that we were applying no pressure to their team and guys like Maynard, DeGoey and most of their forwards could stroll into the contest and get the ball whenever they pleased. Bloody disgraceful effort on a stand alone clash. This. I sit there with family and we know in 10mins whether or not they are switched on. I am guessing the coaches know that too but yesterday they seemed owerless to rev them up. 2 Quote
BW511 2,730 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 (edited) Think yesterday's game will be pivotal to our second half of the season. As @Dr.D & @jnrmac noted, you can tell from the first 5-10 mins what the result will likely be and that's an indictment on the club. I am not sure that we are quite ready to get the job done week after week and that could be a real issue come finals time, when you have to do it for 3-4 weeks in a row, at an intensity well above the H&A season. How do we learn (shudder) from it and figure out ways to stem the tide if an opposition team comes to play? Can we find ways to get 3-4 (or 15) players into a game on an off day (T-Mac, Fritta and Kossie all failed to give a yelp) What do we do when teams use low, flat entries into our forward line to remove the ability of May and Lever? We now know how teams will play us moving forward, so we need to adjust and make sure we treat every game with the respect it deserves. On another note, I found it fascinating how Geelong have employed different game styles for different opponents. This seems to be something new and thought provoking in the industry. So I’m assuming you turned off against Brisbane after 5 minutes? In case you’re curious we won that game quite easily in the end. Shame you missed it. This forum is a shambles after a loss. Get a grip. We aren’t going to win every game. We played at about 50% capacity and got beaten by 2 goals. 6 Quote

This is the worrying aspect. With our start this is our best chance in ages to lock a top 2 in. We came off a longish break. We just can’t do this. Thank goodness it didn’t cost us %. I’ve made this point before but we can’t ignore percentage. Quote
drdrake 3,203 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Would love to know the stats for centre clearances with a break down on hitting the ball forward of the centre line, straight down and backwards. I have to admit I hate seeing the centre set up with no sweeper, 2 reasons if we lose the clearance the back is open for a clear deep clearance kick and it shows what Max is going to do drop it behind for a mid to run around the back. Our forward line function was off and that means it was a team issue as much as it was any individual. The thing that continues to worry me is we don't have a single quality kick in our midfield. Petracca can hit the occasional lace out 60m beauty but his short and medium kicking is far too hit and miss. The rest - Oliver, Sparrow, Jordon, Harmes, Langdon, Brayshaw are long odds to ever pick out a 30m target and weight it to them. On a wide dump of a ground like the SCG you have to hit up forwards around the top of the 50 and on short repeat leads. Same thing goes for the backline. Collingwood just went chip chip chip down the ground because they finally had a ground wide enough to suit their style of play. We couldn't hold them up or force switches. Meanwhile even though our defenders are allegedly good kicks they gave up chances to take on short kicks time and time again. They just burnt one and another and it's totally brainless. Maybe they know one of those short kicks will end up with the midfield butcher brigade and that will end the chance of the attack? I love how good we are at the long down the line player and then running it out of their. That's a great weapon to have. But we can't make that the only plan. The size of the SCG meant once we burst from those packs we generally ran straight in to the next Collingwood defender pushing up or they still had numbers back. The Richmond midfield is no better by foot. I reckon you're looking in the wrong place. It was down to work rate and decision making yesterday. We allowed them to transition the ball through the corridor far too easily, some our defenders were too high on such a small ground (see Salem) and we played hero footy, not team first (see Oliver, Petracca and Kozzy). 3 Quote

I guess there will always be examples where things don't go that way, but I certainly didn't feel like we were going to win at any point on the weekend, which was the same as how I felt 10 minutes in. At half time against the Lions & Dogs, I was confident, as the effort and intent was there - it just took a few tweaks Quote
Willmoy1947 4,257 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Not sure whether or not anyone has had a go at Umpires in this game, but i will anyway. Aside from us not playing well there were several other little scum things that took place First of all De Goey. He has turned into the little snipe i always thought he would be, along with another snipe by the name of Berry, who loved to laugh at his own hits behind play. Oliver was crucified again. Every Umpire that hasn't given him a vote, or a free kick this year should be removed from the AFL. That brings me to three of the most scared, dumb and bias maggots in the comp. They seem to allow opposition players all the time in the world to move around on the mark, to wait for a suitable target, and, compare to us where its play on without the kicker moving in less than a second in some cases. I have given up trying to say it's misinterpretation. IT's a bloody vendetta and i hope that, until they clean their miserable psychosis, they get their just deserts. From what is coming down the line there was funds around to say..... 2 1 1 Quote

We scored the first 3 goals of the 3rd quarter to take the lead. I thought we would close it out from there. Even going into the last i thought we would win given our superior fitness. Alas, not to be. 3 1 Quote
pinkshark 950 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 (edited) [censored] game. [censored] all round. Some classic negative knobs on here. Have you know faith? We are 11 and 2. We're in good nick. Think of the last 15 years for goodness sake. Im gutted we lost as well. Pathetic performance really. They need a massive kick up the [censored] for that effort and display. But 11 and 2? I'll effing take that win/loss record at the half way mark of a season all day every day. Big ben has to be given a crack. Weids had a go and he didn't take it. Just not winning it out of the centre enough, and I wish we would put it to the top of the square more often than the pockets. Give our crumbers a better chance. Collingwood are ordinary. Ouch that hurt. Edited June 15, 2021 by pinkshark 2 1 Quote

I even posted at half time on here saying that it's not as bad as other games. The half against North and the games against Adelaide (and later on Collingwood) were much worse than the first half against Brisbane. 1 Quote

We already have some really bad kicks for goal in Weideman, Pickett, Gawn (when forward) and Fritsch's drop punts are very hit and miss over his career. Lets not make things harder by kicking to the bloody pockets. It's a defenders best friend! 1 Quote

640MD 3,562 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 (edited) Agree with most of this, disappointed, but we are 11-2 at half way, we played like a tired side that had just beaten a couple of top four teams, looking to a break. memories of the end of 2018 come to mind. we can be as good as anyone but we need to play high pressure footy for 4 weeks not 2. how you organise that amongst the players heads, I don’t know. you cannot play your best 22 for all the games but you do need best 22 cherry ripe for the last few games and the finals. Whose job, Football department, fitness and coaches, I have no idea enjoy the break. A harder half season to go, it’s not easy to win a flag. Our last two GF appearances, thought it was won just turning up. Edited June 15, 2021 by 640MD Commas Quote
