    Hibbert's playing great footy. Hopefully gets a premiership medallion. 

    Need to think about his successor though ... he's 31. If he plays on, he'd probably only have one more season in him.

    Maynard is good. Hard at it and good intensity. Some of his recent turnovers from shank kicks have been concerning though. 
    he is not someone I’d think of to target unless if we had to give up very little.

    Not sure how far Deakyn Smith or Bowie are away from a debut. Defending at AFL level is, of course, much different to under 18s. And there's always Lockhart who just needs a decent run at it.

     

    I believe we need a player of Locky's size and pace and run and carry for the really slippery crumbers  like Betts Tippa  and Cody Weightman and Daniels and Hill of GWS. 

    Hibbo has done a great job on Martin Cameron and the Dogs forward types.

    Definirely another one year contract in 2022.

    I've heard there a few unhappy mature-age players there and I know Maynard is friendly with some of our guys, Trac in particular from Metro days and obviously his brother Corey was on our list for a number of years.

    Contracted until next end of next year but thought I'd throw it out there as I think he'd be a great fit and replacement for those guys I mentioned. 

    Tough, competitive and in the right system like ours I think he'd flourish.

    Thoughts?

    Not necessary, given we get a fit Tomlinson back next year and Petty certainly doesn’t deserve to be dropped.

    Jetta's replacement should come from one of Bowey, Deakyn Smith or even Lockhart.

    As for Hibberd's replacement, we still have both Joel Smith and Marty Hore on the list.  And even Gus is an option for that role. He's shown himself to be capable in the backline, and we could possibly get another wingman like Richards from the Dogs for less which would allow Brayshaw to potentially move to the backline to fill the void left by Hibberd?

    we're in a premiership window... if the price is right we should be loading up on anyone available who improves our side, definitely not looking forcheaper alternatives if he's available imo

    Hope he has a crap game Monday, but it will give us a chance to asses him. 
    Not quite sure where he would fit in at the moment. 
    Like everyone, if the price is right, worthy of consideration.

    I have to admit, I think I misread the original post and thought it said Hibberd wasn’t a lockdown defender. Not sure it did in hindsight

    Turner the new interceptor  has also been chosen but it's a smaller Locky that should be given a chance to kind the smalls of the opposition. 
    Hibbo is playing well and warrants a year extension for 2022 some time this  year..

    Maynard wouldn’t get a game in our 2022 defence. Keep Hibbo on, slot Tomlinson back in, give opportunities to Lockhart, Hore and Joel Smith and develop Bowey and Deakyn Smith. We also have the two recent draftees to consider.

    How about prising Scott Pendlebery away from them as a free agent at the end of the year?

    Think he'd be a great addition to our team.

    Play him as a half forward to provide silver service inside 50 delivery and bursts in the midfeild distributing the ball to the outside. 

    Would also be great mentor to guys like Sparrow, Jordon and co, and even guys like Clarry, Vines, Trac, Harmesy and Gus could learn some new tricks off him.

    Peddles gets the oppertunity to live out a childhood dream of playing in a Demons premiership.  That has to be an attractive prospect compared to more misery at The Filth.

    Yeah, I get where you are going with this, as I do see some potential in their respective footballing abilities, but do wounder if their bodies will ever really allow them to be the sort of reliable contributor to the side that Hibbo has been.

    My impression is Maynard has been pretty sound over the journey in terms of getting out on the park.

    I’d have Maynard over any of the first three in a heartbeat. Joel Smith has proven he isn’t up to the grade at the least, whereas at least Maynard has smashed it for years in a top 4 team

    From my own observations on game days, I agree with your statement that his disposal let him down at times, but I also believe he was highly rated for his kicking within the playing/coaching group.

    From recollection there was that pearler of a goal he kicked from 50m on the run to put us in the position of stealing the win/draw we scraped against GC in 2019, which would support high quality kicking ability.

    Our kicking as a team has improved out of sight this season as a team and I do wounder if playing in the current environment Hore would similaly benifit from the increased confidence and/or lesser pressure on the ball carrier that our improvement in systems and structures seem to be delivering?

    I guess Jordan Lewis would never leave Hawthorn either.

    Thats a good point, I can't say my memory of how effective his disposal was is very clear. 

    A quick stats search reveals some interesting stuff. (all are averages from the afl website) 

    Disposal efficiency: 69.3 (considered below average) 

    Intercept marks: 2.4 (elite) 

    Intercept possessions: 7.1 (elite) 

    Spoils: 4.2 (elite)

    Contested one on one defence: 2.1 (elite) 
     

    So yes, you're very much correct in saying that his disposal needs tidying up. But his defensive game all round puts forward a very compelling case that he could be more than just depth next year. Hopefully he gets a good run at it without injuries.

    I did read an article on Pendelbery in the past few months that was stating he was looking to step down from their captaincy and looking forward to mentoring the next captain comming through, so yes that would suggest he's pretty invested.  Mind you this was all before the Collingwood board erupted in civil war and Buckley pulled the pin too.

    But he'll be pretty old at the end of the season and Collingwood will be looking to fee up.list spaces and probably cap space etc for rebuilding and also with a new coach, new board, new list manager and new club direction overall, who knows, he may change his tune all of a sudden.

    The Cats only had 10 No. 30+ year olds playing last night - they may now have their eyes on another one for next year.

On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
