The fact that anyone would start a thread on this is hilarious.

SEN is pulp fiction - it's media trash and has been since Crocmedia moved in and should thus be treated that way.

If you're getting your news from this source and subsequently taking personally, I'd be questioning a range of things...

It is purely entertainment EO. I knew he was going to tee off and he did.
The one factor Chad’s brother has not mentioned once is that the Salary Cap will increase each year

The bloke really is so predictable these days.

Yep, its a long contract, yep, its worth lots of money. He would be on teh radio right now saying, its a worry that Petracca signed only for 2 years.. Melbourne should have put a long term offer to him.. Melbourne are on notice .. blah blah blah.

A couple in the media right now are embarrassing themselves with their rhetoric aimed at Melbourne.

Let them mouth off - their opinions are often inaccurate  and to us, mean far call.

Is that a fact regarding Wines?

Because Tracca has way more ability if true, midfield & a 50 goal a year forward later into career

ollie-wines-contract

"Foxfooty.com.au can exclusively reveal that Wines has inked a new deal that ties him to the club until the end of 2026.  He will be 32 by the time the contract expires".

At the time, (Nov 2020) Wines had 2 years left on his contract which they extended by 4 years, to 2026 ie a 6 year contract until age 32.

The President was on the ABC just now and explained the extensive due diligence that they go through when doing deals like this.  Every deal gets presented to the board for sign off; it does not sound like anything except a well thought our strategy.

I certainly hope so. The exact job of the Board

Worth starting a new thread on this as folks have been keen to hear from roffey.

I'm relieved to hear we are unlikely to end up with a back-ended contract/sal cap problem like the Pies.

Did he carry on when Port gave Ollie a 6 year contract until he is 32?

No!

And I bet if Port had secured Petracca's signature on a 7 year contract until he is 33 he would say it was a great coup.

Cornes is a dope.

Is that true that he said nothing about Ollie’s 6 year contract with his old club? If so should be called out in that. That said Tracc is actually 7 years on top of current 2 to go so nearly nine years. That is a bit different.

One other thing mentioned in general on SEN was that the swans assistant coaches are not coming down only the senior coach will be attending the game.

Advantage us.

We've got a premiership combination together now with Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, Viney, May, Lever, Salem, Langdon, Ben Brown all stitched up and able over the next 3-4 years.  Add in Fritsch, Jackson, Pickett, Rivers, Jordon and a decent mature supporting cast.

I'm going to put it out there now that we WILL win at least one flag in the next four years.  I wouldn't have anywhere near that confidence without Petracca in that mix, so if it takes a 7 year contract to keep the band together over that period then so be it.

It's been 56 years, quite frankly MFC supporters will not give a second thought to Petracca's contract length when this crew delivers the flag.   I couldn't care is we gave him 10 years!

As a wise man once said, nuffies gon’ nuff. There’s no better example than Kane Cornes.

I’m pretty good at being able to see an argument from multiple angles but I can’t understand Cornes’ position on this one, or anyone who’s been critical of it.

What are people worried is going to happen? He’s not going to plateau yet. For the first four years of the seven, he’ll improve, and he’s already a star. He’s a core element to our flag push over the next 5 years - of course we want him locked away. It gives certainty to everyone who is working on delivering said flag - the players, the coaches, Christian himself, and the supporters. The only thing is that could plausibly happen is he slows down in the last few years, but so what. Petracca at 80% is still better than the average player out there that would otherwise be on the list.

Very true.  That's why I worry that Picket, Jackson and Rivers will all want to go home at some stage and we'll get pillaged again.

We won’t keep them all. But we must choose who stays long term

I couldn't find any comment from Cornes about Ollie's contract extension.

A relevant aspect is that Olllie will be 32 when his contract expires and Petracca 33.  Not a lot of difference regarding longevity.

I may be wrong but Cornes has a habit of being selective.

I actually feel a bit bad saying he is a 'dope'.  It is very rare for me to make a personal criticism but he is one commentator I cannot abide and it got the better of me.

There seems to be an industry gaining momentum "Old players suffering deprivation syndrome "so they join the media : Lloyd, Cornes, Newman , McClure  . Some of these people forget that they were lucky to be born with a lot of physical attributes. However that does not neccessarily translate to mental ability.

Give me the Coodabeens ant day of the week. (Or the Front Bar)

I don’t mind Cornes. He’s opinionated and provocative, but isn’t that the point? I don’t look to him as the voice of reason or objectivity.

I’d prefer reason and objectivity, personally. There are more than enough angles matters can be viewed on with good thought, without the need for deliberate, provocative contrarianism.

Agreed. Obviously long term contracts are gambles on both sides. Club is gambling that Trac can perform to a high standard for a long period. Trac is potentially turning his back on a small fortune for some more security. I'd certainly prefer the security of it were me...

One thing that I always cringe at is when a player signs on till the start of their free agency.

Also the demand will force the supply. The more players that get signed to long term deals, they more you'll have to if you want to keep your stars.

(First, Likes, Hahas and the odd Shocked to everyone on this thread. Then...)

Reckon it was the big fortune he turned his back on; he got the small one...?

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
