Caro was excellent when she had a hotline into the inner sanctum at AFL. That's long gone and she's had to broaden her commentary to all things football. That brings her right back to the pack with footy journalists now being a dime a dozen. She was great but hasn't added a whole lot in years.

Who cares where she has been tbh it’s been nice not listening to her anti Melb dribble.

Matthews was a thug on 3AW ?

Seriously, he was also the best player I have ever seen.

The most skillful IMO was our beloved Robbie, who I still miss greatly. No one I have seen since comes close to him for ball skill, no one.

Yes, but still a thug

I think you mean drivel. ?

Pipe down you gestational parent fertiliser. I know what I meant.

My only problem with Caro is that she seems to have a bloodlust for clubs/players/stories that aren’t performing, on field and off, as if she’s seeking to accelerate or even revel in their demise. If fearlessness and accuracy are the pillars of journalism, then empathy should come next, if only to balance the bad news with some hope and relatability. As a person, she may have it in spades, as a journalist, I’m not sure we’ve ever seen it.

She focuses on the off field stuff which is fine, there is a place for that in the game. The only issue I have with her is her cheerleading for the AFL, particularly when they were trying to send North to the Gold Coast. Other than that I don't have a problem with her, I enjoy reading about the off field stuff and let's face it, the mainstream journos who focus on the onfield stuff are lightweights compared to some of the discussion we get on here and other non traditional media.

You think you had it tough, mate.  My mother left home before my siblings and I were even born.

That joke is so old Freud told it at his first conference

Caro is clearly a Richmond supporter. Whateley is Geelong. Besides the obvious support of former players, does anyone know who the real journalists follow?

I know it's a stretch because you asked about 'real journaists', but Mick Warner follows Richmond.

On a slight tangent, does anyone know how Jesse Hogan (the journalist from The Age, not the footballer) is getting on? A Melbourne supporter who became ill (had a stroke, from memory) in, perhaps his early 30s a few years ago.

I see in her most recient bile laced offering, that she can't help but take another swipe at Melbourne Re 'the tanking affair'.

[censored] off back to wherever it was you were hiding Wilson.  How this person is considered a 'Sports Journalist' is beyond me.  Would be better off doing tabloid crap for the Telegraph.

Each to their own, best footy journo there is for mine.  And I’m not ashamed of our past and don’t want to cancel it.

I’m proud of what we are achieving and where we came from just makes it all the more meritorious.

lots of love here for CW. She has many years of good journalism and some low lows. Personally i’ll never forgive her fr the slow leaking tanking story she drove at us. And lest anyone say “ she was right” she wasn’t.

she still says that episode was worse than the drug saga at essendon. she does. At the time she outright questioned whether we should continue as a club and wanted jimmy stynes statue removed from the G.

let’s remember that she wasn’t speaking without “fear or favour” she was absolutely doing the bidding of the AFL. so many clubs including the big clubs ie hawks, pies, blues and others had done it, and the afl needed to stamp it out. this was mainly because there had been the entrance of big gambling sponsorship money into the game. So scapegoat was needed to a./ make it look like it was just ONE club and protect the AFL and b./ to scare all clubs away from the action.

So despite the obvious cover up at the centre of her work ie that it was many clubs over many years, encouraged by AFL policy she tried to shame us literally out of existence.

she outright tried to kill the club by poisoning us to death and questioning our right to exist. all of this in one of our darkest, weakest hours.

was tanking good, helpful or beneficial nope. Especially fr us. was it worse than essendon drug saga??? should we have removed jimmy’s statue at the G? do we have a right to exist as a club?

Caro will never look the same to me after that. i don’t care about anything she does or has done after that.

Jake Niall is Collingwood.  I think Michael Gleeson is also.

Not sure I can find any other 'real' journalists.

The non-ex player 'pretend' journos:

  • Purple is North
  • Mark Stevens is North (I think)
  • Sam McClure is Carlton
  • John Ralph is Richmond
  • Tom Morris is Melbourne
  • Robbo is Essendon

And Greg Baum- Collingwood

those age journos, though, don’t hold back when critiquing the pies.

You got a source for this, especially that last part? Never read that anywhere.

100% Wells11, and since then I have heard her several times equate the Essendon drug saga with our “tanking” episode, when talking AFL scandals.

i did read it LN , as it’s remained etched somewhere deep in my heart. but i’m def not going searching through her work at that time to find it. lol. someone else here may have a stronger stomach than me.

That’s the problem with hardline journalists. They’re great to watch unless they have their sights aimed at you.

I don’t have that much resentment for Caro. Always enjoyed her commentary, and always loved that she challenged the uninspired boys -club status quo. It’s nice to get a break from the endless parade of ex-players turned commentators to hear from people who are truly proficient in the trade of journalism. She’s been doing it since the 70s.

Sure she went after us pretty hard during the tanking days. But hey, we clearly did tank, so maybe she should have. I’d rather save my anger from those days to the Melbourne footy club administration, not a journo uncovering the rot for all to see. It’s all a distance memory today anyway.

I had a search and couldn't find it mate. Would suggest the onus is on you to prove that statement, especially in the context of you going after a journo for things they've meant to have said.

there was more to it than just that 2018 age podcast which i was quoting from. you’re making feel like searching fr it ... i’ll see how i feel later.

She gave Richmond (Hardwick and Gale) a serve this week saying the AFL is filthy with them for whitewashing the Bolton saga and complaining about Marvel and umpires.  Bolton gets a $20,000 none of which is suspended.  She said they are 'at war' with one another.  Even said she wouldn't be surprised if they get 2 games at Marvel next year.  I personally doubt that.

The point is she can be critical of her own club and the AFL.  She isn't as one sided as people make out.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
