Are they going to snub him for the AA team like they did to May last season?

He should be a lock.

No one is a lock after 6 games in a 22 game season. Still a long way to go, but Jake has been outstanding, as has our entire defensive unit.

Lever isn't a sniper like Rance, nor does he spit the dummy like Rance.

Much better than Rance at the same age.

Give me Jake any day.

But, but, but...we paid two first rounders for him remember.

I never understood the argument we paid too much. He was always going to star for us and part of the timing for him to hit this form was due to our system not allowing him to work to his strengths. Tomlinson has been a key to this

wtf. ask any supporter from any other club and they will make you look like a fool. Rance is one of the all time greats. Lever has strung 6 good games together.

I'm much more excited about our defensive combination than I am about whether any given one of them outperforms Rance.

Of course, that can't be said without also nodding to the fact that Lever showed magnificent leadership keeping our defense confident and organised after May went down.

Also worth noting that if not for the stats hole created by Tom Hawkins elbow, May's numbers would be just as good.

Hold this Lever-May-Tomlinson set of tall defenders together and in form and they will go down in history alongside the likes of the Scarlett-Harley-Taylor trio.

But that is ambition, not yet reality. Ambition definitely worth having, though.

Different players, never like these comparisons.

Rance was a full back who had incredible intercept ability. Whereas Lever is simply a specialist intercept player.

Always loved Lever at Adelaide and knew we needed an Adelaide type defensive setup for him to really play to the best of his ability. And finally we have two big gorilla's for that. To think he was going to be able to do what he's been able to with Oscar as a key post was almost comical. That and the fact he's had his first full pre season with us since arriving helps.

Rance was unbelievable at his peak and one of the best full backs we've ever seen.

Comparing Rance to May would be more appropriate if there's to be a comparison. Both play the same position and have a great ability to intercept also.

Reviewing the OP, I'm not sure why the WA Premier is interested in the comparison between Rance and Lever. \

Unless he's trying to poach him for one of the WA teams...

Pretty sure Lever never hit someone who was on the ground in the back of the head.

once again, another ill-informed post. If May wasn't playing for Melbourne you'd be saying he was dirty too (runs past the ball, leaves the ground, hits Martin high etc.). I love May but to say Lever is better than Rance because Rance did something dirty is laughable and biased to cringe worthy levels. No-one in their right mind would take Lever over Rance.

Read my post again.  I said Lever is better than Rance at the same age.  He was an AA in his early 20's before cruelled by injuries for several years and and will have more AA's before he retires.  Compare them then and I won't be the one looking like a fool.

wait, so let me get this straight, you think Lever will be better than Rance? Lol. you're embarrassing yourself.  Lever isn't even better than May. Let alone Rance. Rance was an all time great. He performed in grand finals. He shut down big and smalls. lever is an intercept defender that isn't that strong one on one. Stop comparing all time great to dees players that are in good form.

A Melbourne player is being compared favourably with a star of the modern game. This is good news in anyone's language and is a sign of our increasing relevancy. Who "wins" is secondary. Compare away, media!

Both very good players in their own right.

Lever can finally play to his strengths now that Thommo can take the other opposition KPF. He is an outstanding intercept player who just reads the play so well. Fingers crossed he can stay fit and healthy because, other than injury, on current form and trajectory he’ll be an AA for sure.

Give me Lever anyday. Rance was nothing but a religious fruit loop or at least pretends to be.

I always thought Rance was overrated. He was certainly ordinary one on one

Commentators always got a stiff one over Rance

He was good, but not awesome in my eyes

Lever has been outstanding this year

6 games in....

I hate these comparisons to former top players, Lever isn’t having a Rance-like year, he’s having a Lever-outstanding year.

Just like Kozzie isn’t the next Cyril Rioli, he’s the first Kozzie Pickett.

Rance is one of the most overrated players of all time.
best defender ever they’d ask? Certainly the best if the modern era?

please. He left and the Tigers got better. A very good defender for sure but as good as the media say? No way

Jake is 4 AA and 3 picture books behind but time is on his side.

I would suggest one or two of those AA's were 'gifts' and Rance has only one 'picture hook'/premiership medal.

Don't care about the AA's but would be very happy for Jake to surpass Rance's medal count.

Plenty of time for Jake to do that.

Both Lever and Rance are/were beneficiaries of good defensive structures that make their success almost inevitable.
The number of times the opposition pop it up for Lever to easily intercept would be embarrassing for them, if it wasn’t a deliberate result of us executing our game plan.
Both great players, but Rance was a prat... so Lever by a mile.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
