If they would have chosen $$$ over spectacle then they may as well just get rid of the ladder and play a round robin competition all year between the Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Richmond, Geelong, Adelaide & West Coast.

Don't be mistaken, I talk to a lot of people who want to attend / watch our games and they are not D members. I think there is a bit of general excitement about watching our team at the moment that transcends the normal. I have a mate who was a rusted on Fitzroy member and lost the desire to follow a single team after the merger. He still goes to games but is not a fanatic. Point is; there are plenty of viewers out there that love watching the game and Dee's and Dog's are compelling viewing at the moment .

Again we don't get any advantage from this game in NT as we play a northern interstate team used to these conditions.

Apart from Port & Adelaide we have only played the saints at NT (Uluru not Darwin)

[censored] me, are you from Australia...

Uluru is a 450km drive from Alice Springs, where we play.

Brisbane and Alice Springs have completely different climates

we have also played West Coast

Gives us a nice break to recover before the Queens Birthday game.

That Queen's Birthday match will be an opportunity for the Mighty Dees to make a very big statement about the near future and its progression as a footy force.

Cannot wait to see this one.

Thanx Left Foot Snap, I wouldn't want to leave our great country but I definitely want to get around and see more of it. Cheers.

This fixture announcement is amazing for us. It’s a tiny pity that neither game is a home game at the G but the FTA and media exposure from being front and centre for a fortnight is huge for us.

QB is the following week. So in the first 12 rounds before the bye we will have had 7 games on FTA. I suspect that will be a record for us.

Still prime time opportunities in the rest of the fixture too, particularly with Thursday nights likely to be used in those post-bye rounds. Essendon, Port, the Dogs again, West Coast and Geelong again could all net prime time exposure. (Edit: disappointingly of those five games I’ve mentioned only the Dogs is a home game for us)

9 free-to-air in the first 13 games

Saints, Cats, Hawks, Tigers, Swans, Blues, Bulldogs, Lions & Pies

Cable or streaming ... Freo, GWS, North & Crows

Was predicting 8 of 13 but that was a hopeful wish.

And as you stated t_u, the 2nd half of the season promises more of the same ... if we can maintain our form

Anyway, 9 from 13 free-to-air games would definitely be a record in my view.  If it had have happened before it would be a standout memory

A fantastic result all round

Surely broadcasters would much prefer this too. I'd be writing this into the next TV deal if I were a broadcaster.

No doubt the AFL will be using it as leverage for an increase in revenue. They've got flexible fixruring, Thursday night footy, more games (expansion teams), more finals (wildcard round), night GF to try and wring more cash out of 7/fox and flexible fixruring seems a no brainer now that we've seen it work. Perhaps give a little more notice (say 6 weeks instead of 4).

I have to admit that I've got a bit of latent MFCSS about this double header block busters.  Last season we were just stating to get up and about and then came up against Brisbane and Port in big games/tests in subsequent weeks, lost both games and became a bit of a dislocation to our season.

I think our team is performing much better right now and I really do hope we put on a good show in front of the football world this time.

That’s what I was thinking too. This is surely an everyone-wins scenario.

Amazing how some uncertainty can force us to think outside the way we’ve always done things. Hopefully this fixturing is here to stay.

Unfortunately this type of fixturing ruins plans for interstate games.  You don't know which day to travel and book tickets for.  Worse case scenario is finishing up in Adelaide for a weekend!

Good news to date is Collingwoods performance.  With only 24K turning up to watch their game against the Suns, there is no way any broadcaster would want to be showing them at the moment.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
