Agreement for the first Gawn and Salem not so on the others.

This is three weeks running that coaches have agreed the top 2 but little if any agreement on the others.

So Trac has polled in all 5 games.,  His consistency has been amazing.   And Salem has been amazing too.

Four Demons in the top 13, not bad.

Also Ed Langdon didnt get a vote. I didn't have  him in my votes either which shows my superior footy nous.  He was very good though just didnt get much of the ball.

    This. There was a play where they were closing in on us and Jackson handballed to max then came back to Jackson then out of danger. Remarkably good by two ruckmen.

    I was just reading The Age match report on it and this little bit caught my eye.

    "Despite not being the closest umpire to the ball, he paid a free kick for a marking infringement against Hawk Harry Morrison during the second quarter, leading to a gimme goal for Langdon. The Hawthorn home fans weren’t happy with the decision, and neither was the legendary David Parkin, who didn’t mince his words while commentating for the ABC, saying Margetts should be dropped for the decision."

    It was regarding the umpire paying that free kick for chopping the arms directly in front of goal. The umpires had a pretty poor game with some bizarre decisions on both sides and I'll also say I think we got most of the important 50/50's. But that was definitely not one of them, in no way shape or form did Morrison spoil Langdon legally and if Parkin doesn't know that he shouldn't be commenting full stop. The game and the rules have changed, get with it or retire from commentary.

    I've also had a bit of further reflection on the game and the thing that keeps popping up is that our first few wins I felt came mostly from even performances across the board and teamwork. The Hawks match I think was mainly down to individual efforts from Gawn, Petracca (who I think still could've been better), Oliver, Langdon, and Lever. I'm not saying everyone else was poor but in other weeks I think our bottom 6 have been still quite decent, I'd say that wasn't the case this time. Jones in particular is lucky that he's on the cusp of 300 and is practically undroppable because of it. It doesn't sound great but it's the truth, had he been on say 297 or passed the 300 he would be first on the block.

    Ultimately we got the win with only playing good footy for one quarter, it's another tick for the club. Now the real test comes.

    In terms of excitement for sure. And while my beloved Aaron Davey could lay a tackle and invented forward pressure Kozzie is much more menacing with his tackles. Davey was much cleaner by foot something I hope will come with Kozzie. Kozzie reminds me of a human missile, when he starts running I laugh like I'm riding a S1000RR, it's crazy fast.

    Thought Jackson was stiff when Tmac played on, was definitely a Mark, and a very brave one as well, running back with the flight and got properly cleaned up, didn't get the stat to go with it. Tmac did the team thing btw, just felt Jackson deserved more pats on the bum.

    I'm not generally one to criticize umpires, because they are set an almost impossible task by the AFL with perennially changing 'interpretations' and so many grey areas - but the umpires had a shocker I thought. No doubt we had the rub of the green most of the day.

    It's probably been mentioned elsewhere on here, but that reversal of the HTB decision in our forwardline because of a subsequent high tackle is one of the most creative pieces of adjudication I have ever seen in a game of AFL.

    On another one regarding rules and umpiring, there was a very interesting situation brewing with the goal TMac kicked after the Jackson free kick. The quick nature of it meant that Tom couldn't have been judged to "take the advantage" but because it was ending with a score review that seemed to supersede that adjudication. Now had it been found to have been touched or had the goal umpire called it initially as touched we would have been robbed of a practically certain goal because of this glitch in the rules when it comes to score reviewing.

    Surely in that instance logic should dictate that in the event of it being found as touched they take it back to Jackson to take his shot on goal. I think that was what TMac was arguing to the umpire, that his grabbing of the ball and kicking the goal was pure instinct and not a decision to take advantage (I think it even happened as the whistle was blown).

    There has been a lot of talk over many years about our lack of ability to develop our young players. However, I found it interesting that at the first bounce on Sunday we had Petracca, Oliver and Kossie at Max's feet while Hawthorn had Mitchell, O'Meara and Wingard in the center square.

    Our three have all been developed in house via the draft and the Hawk's three were all imported as mostly finished articles from other clubs. It has to be recognised that we have had access to a lot more early draft picks than Hawks. having said that, out talent spotting has been very good in the drafts. Kossie and Oliver were considered as 'brave' picks. Petracca fell into our laps because of the Saints preference for a forward.

    In defence it is different. We have an imported defence with Hibberd, Lever, Tomlinson and May.

    !7 of last week's team of 23 came to us through the draft and been developed in-house.

    Given the way we are travelling, our development of mids is very good but it seems we need to import key defenders. In all other areas of the ground except for the wings we have developed our players very well over the last 5 years or so.

    Maybe with Yze and Williams joining Goodwin they have all added some polish to the almost finished goods.

    Actually all 4 players from Hawthorn were recuits from other clubs whilst our 4 were recruits developed by the MFC from the draft

    Just looking over our fixture again helps to reaffirm how important these early season wins are.

    Our final seven weeks is brutal: Port away, Hawthorn, Gold Coast away, the Dogs, West Coast away, Adelaide, Geelong in Geelong.

    Every second week is interstate/in Geelong, and one of the home games is against the Dogs.

    It's going to be a tough run into the finals. We won't want to be relying on late-season wins for a finals berth.

    I watched the replay on kayo today. Post match commentary from Dermott Brerenton has him absolutely giving it to the umpires for that decision and also the Gawn v McEvoy decision not too long after. I've never heard him give it to the umpires so badly before.

    The 12-point turnaround of this particularly, preceded by Rivers' involvement, then the Langdon-Pickett-Jones(yes, Jones!)-Hibberd(again!!)-Melksham-Petracca-Jackson-McDonald chain should have been Demonland's VOTW. Trac just doing what Trac does is so 'yesterday'!?

    Thought we came back great in the last quarter, but man did we struggle with a bottom team most of the match. I will still take the win though, go Dees! I really hope the return of Brown lifts us for Richmond. 

    On a side note, I can’t see any demon winning the brownlow. Too many shining stars and they really share the talent around. Not that that’s an altogether bad thing ?

    Just watch that again. Absolutely great effort by Rivers too to interfere with Wingard’s run without giving away a free. Hibberd’s heroics wouldn’t have happened without that.

    Yep that was a weird one - if TMac had clearly missed the goal without the need for a review, the ball probably would have been given back to Jackson. Grey area for sure.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
