Like you Jaded I believe we are really on the the cusp of being great. I am an oldie who watched the champion Melbourne teams of the 50s. What we saw today in the last quarter was exactly what those champion teams did almost every week. Ground them into the turf. And when did we have a percentage like we have today?  Max Gawn? It's impossible to find words to describe this Hercules. What a champion and inspiration to the team..

We've finally produced the killer instinct that the top teams have. Grind the opposition into the ground in the last quarter.

This has been missing from our psyche for ages. It's a sign of great team confidence in the system.

Gawn, bludy-hell what a champion & leader

Hibberd played at a level I thought was behind him today too. I’d almost forgotten how good his best footy was.

First game for the year and played his best form. Supreme effort.

So your argument he has some kind of Mascot and lucky charm about him.

Saying its important is anot an argument.. .Its because its important at 5 zip.. I put it out there.

The point I was making which I think you actually overlooked is quite simple..

IS he our best 22?

Yea sure he has heart. Symbolism..lost me there.

I just want us to be 6 zero thats tge symbolism i want.

On his current form I dont think he has been in the best 22 for a while.

Is it important for the big 300. YES.

Whats the rush is the point Mr Mullet?

Channel 7 reporting.....

"Melbourne is 5-0 heading into Anzac Eve and they have decided to drop former captain Nathan Jones on the eve of his 300th game..."

"When asked "wtcf" by a plethora of reporters today... coach Simon Goodwin quoted long time supporter @leave it to deever and said "why rush it??"

You have to be effffffing kidding me... ?‍♂️

Jones is a problem. I love him, I hate our recent history of [censored] over captains, but he’s a class below what we’re trying to do, he’s off the pace, and I don’t think he deserves a spot. But he does deserve 300. Glad I’m not making that decision.

Easy as decision. He’s not so far off that he’s truly costing the team yet if you compare him incrementally to who would replace him (Sparrow et al), so he stays. Plays game 300 in front of a huge crowd, and gets chaired off to a standing ovation after a good win and gets to wave to all the loyal MFC fans who have been on the ride with him.

He becomes a week by week proposition after that.

Maxy Gawn must be leading the Brownlow votes. I can't think of a more dominant player across the first 5 rounds. Definite 3 votes today you'd think and I reckon he polled v the giants and Freo. Possibly Geelong as well.

I am not as impressed as many on here seem to be. We played poor footy until about 5 to go before hlf time and then played better but still did not use the ball well and muffed our inside 50s. In the last we ran all over them, which yes, a good side does but they went to water. If we play like that next week we will be thumped from here to kingdom come. We need the 3 missing forwards in the side. If it is tall so be it.

However good sides win ugly games of footy and we did that. A very good sign.

Can we talk about how good Langdon is?

Yes let's do. I reckon he's leading our B+F (captain excluded because he's the best player in the comp).

At the 3/4 break, I was hoping (without a great deal of confidence) for the ‘relief’ if a hard-fought. ‘ugly’ win.  Then we started playing how we played to get us to 4 zip, and in the ‘blink of an eye’, we look a million dollars.  5 zip! That’s what the good teams do!

Viney has an unfair advantage in these situations 640.

I believe he has six gonads!

You underestimate Clarkson. Without our Key Backmen and Key Forward we had to play a different style. It took a while to gel

If Petty plays next week, he will have at least 5 goals kicked against him. At least.

You would think Jetta would come straight back in for him.....(if May is not ready)

On Jones, yes he had a quiet game today but i'm backing him in next week. If we were losing then yes I'd say you have to look at his spot but I'm sorry this guy deserves to play his 300th on a big game and in front of a huge crowd. The thing is we don't need Jones to get the 20 possessions anymore because finally we have other mids that can step up now. For years this guy has carried us and he has been through the worst and stayed loyal.

The players love him and have already mentioned after the game about it being his 300th next week, It would just feel so flat if we dropped him this week and what do we want him to play his 300th the week after in tassie in front of no one?

Play him and the players can use it as extra motivation to win. He deserves it. Let him enjoy his moment as only the 2nd player to reach the 300 club for our team.

Tbh, Tigers only have two talls. I’d roll Brayshaw back and Tmac to the wing, drop Brown and bring in Weid and BBB

I appreciate your loyalty as you obviously appreciate Chunks.

If he plays poorly and we lose will it have been worth it.

Cant we wait until the game after that is all Im saying?

It’s a dilemma, I agree. But the problem with predetermining that Jonesy will be back the following week, or any other week, is that it predetermines that someone else will be dropped. We can’t have players come into a side knowing they are only place holders for a teammates’ glory game.

I'm putting money on Maxy straight away. 29/1 is too good to pass up.

Great win in the end,Hawks played well for 3 quarters but we didn't roll over like the last 20 years.

Jones has bee good all year and put in a bad one,but plays his 300th next week!!!

Imagine if we dropped players after a BAD one

We'd have played our 2nd's team the last 30 years.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
