  • Each team plays each other once
  • Plus an extra rivalry round
  • 200 H & A games vs 198 current
  • Final 12 = 15 Finals vs Current 9
  • A minimum $20M more on current rights
  • 1 Team from Tasmania (Tassie Devils) & 1 Team from NT/North QLD (Northern Crocs)

A final 12? Good God what a bloody awful idea.

And NT/Nth Qld combined or a choice between the 2?

Cairns would be ok. Only a 8hr drive to see a game. That's a short distance up here.

Would mean that the pies would still not play in Tas and NT. Before we add more teams perhaps the likes of Collingwood should play in Tas, Canberra, Geelong and Alice before bringing in more teams.

Was it just me or did it look like an interview for Gill's job?

A final 12. Go away Eddie  Go AWAY...

Demetriou looked like he was in a jail cell, Crown Casino going well???

Final 12....

Pathetic

Maybe it is time to dramatically strengthen the second tier of Australian football, instead of imagining that only the official 'AFL' level matters and coming up with yet more hare-brained ideas to fit the mammoth plug in the guinea pig holes?

After watching am not finding much i dislike about it.

20 teams playing each other once would be great.  It would finally be an even competition with no major advantages to clubs like Collingwood(home games) & Geelong.   There is a lot of luck involved currently as you happen to play twice on any given year.  Some of these teams are so much more likely to play finals due to these advantages.

Even a top 12 is not too bad if out of 20 teams.  Could be as simple as 11th and 12th are effectively wildcards.  It would stop a lot of teams from tanking as more would be in contention for these spots.

Overall i hope the competition goes down a similar path to this hypothetical one that is outlined.  It would create a more exciting and fair competition....Something we have never had even close to!

Fuschias are still available! :)

20 round season - ok, whatever

Final 12 - terrible

Nt / FNQ team - unfeasible

‘Breakthrough team’ - a joke

40 million combined funding annually - ridiculous

Brand new stadium in Hobart for 7 games a year - lol

Brand new stadium having a roof because its cold outside - jump in the Derwent

So this is step 1 in Eddie's image rehabilitation campaign.

He's just saying a bunch of popular (to the lay-person) but largely impractical things. It's a PR piece for Eddie and that is all.

Sad but predicatable.

The second tier doesn’t interest me, but grass roots footy does.

I’d invest in regional areas and work place laws so that people still have weekends and still live in the country. So many fewer young blokes play footy these days because they don’t have the time, money or inclination.

Eddie’s plan on spending probably close to a billion dollars in the next decade for a Tasmanian AFL team is crazy. Imagine if that money was spent on country schools, country hospitals, country jobs in Tasmania. And a few bucks directly on ovals and change rooms.

I get they need a team but the team should grow from the grassroots up, not from monumental investment.

The VFL is a sad joke now, completely ruined. Why would anyone want to play their guts out in that comp? It means nothing

purely a development league with extra players to make up numbers...

The competition is already has too many teams and the talent is spread too thin IMO.

Moreover, how many clubs are truly sustainable without significant AFL support?  Probably 6 in Victoria, 2 in WA, 1 in Adelaide and 1 in Sydney. It makes no sense to be adding two new teams to be on the teet.

A New Zealand team can't be too far away.

You'd think they'd be naturals at the sux-sux-sux starting formation.

Possibly the stupidest idea since someone suggested that we shouldn’t have sung “grand old flag” after last Sunday’s win against GWS.

No, talent stretched far enough already across 18 clubs.

Finals system works just fine.

Relocate North to Tassie.

This man once said the winner of the pre-season competition should get a bye to the finals. At that point I stopped listening to his ideas.

20 teams is ok but I would rather two divisions of 10 teams. North East Vs South West. Everybody plays every team in their division twice and half the other division once = 23 rounds. Finals can be a playoff of the best in the divisions.

I'm not against expanding to 20 teams but not in the timeframe being suggested, I don't think, given COVID.

I am 100% overwhelmingly against 12 finals teams, or any situation in which more than 50% of sides make the finals. The myopic stupidity of thinking that more finals sides = more finals = more money will eventually be realised to be stupid when half the finals are meaningless "wild card" games whilst the quality of the finals, and subsequent interest/attendance at them, takes a hit.

No argument from me providing they wear white & black vertical stripes.(not black & white). What do you think Eddie?

methinks eddie's grandiose posturing was more about eddie and his mates in the media than it was about footy and tasmania.

just can't help himself

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
