It's odd that after this round (barring a draw), one of Geelong and Brisbane will be winless and one of Adelaide and Sydney will be undefeated.  Early days, of course.

A fascinating round for 3 of last year's finalists and who will make it this year..

  • Pies, Cats and LIons are 0-1.
  • Cats play Lions this week so one of them will go 0-2..
  • Pies play Carlton and if they lose they will also go 0-2.  If Carlton loose and go 0-2 it snuffs out their chances of finals.

In the last 10 years 58 teams have started 0-2 but only 5 have gone on to play finals.  And in the history of the game only 2 poor starters (0-2) have subsequently won a premiership.

So two of Pies, Cats, Lions and Blues will each have less than 10% chance of making finals.

Even if Pies win and go 1-1, imv they have little chance of making finals.

On my reckoning that is two final 8 spots for the taking!

Now, let's beat the Saints,  Dees.

Prefer a draw tonight but if not probably a Pies win

Could not stand a Carlton bandwagon

Bulldogs and Eagles could be interesting... in a non covid world I would probably have gone along... nice 32k crowd at Docklands

What??? Prefer a Pies win!!!! Never an option.

Shame on you ....

May Carlton & Collingwood inflict vicious injuries upon each other

That is all that counts.
The result is evil and disgusting whichever way it falls

Carlton should win tonight, Williams and Martin come in and make them a lot better.  O Mac with 3 off the bench this time

Bears to beat the Cats

Crows to beat Sydney - all 16 'experts' have tipped Sydney but I reckon the Crows are up an about

Port - 100pt win

Gold Coast 70 pt win

Tigers by plently

Dogs in a close one

Giants in another close on

Carlton

Geelong home advantage enough

No idea between Sydney and the Crows

Port easily

Gold Coast without too much fuss

Tigers by plenty

Doggies too strong for the Eagles

GWS will out-muscle an under-manned Freo

Be positive - one of those clubs will finish the game deeply miserable, while the other will be given false hope and fail to address their deficiencies.

Personally, I think Carlton do false hope and failure to address deficiencies much more enthusiastically than Collingwood.  Plus, Collingwood are back on their long slow slide while Carlton really could be a menace in finals over the next few years... if... they stay humble enough to work on their problems instead of getting to finals and then sacking their coach because some other 'star' coach insisted he could take the (actually quite deficient) list to a premiership. So; misery for Collingwood and complacency for Carlton is definitely the best result.

I would be happy with a Blues win DJ. With the exception on when the pies play Adelaide and WCE I never barrack for them. Carn the blues.

Carlscum

Girlong ( yuk )

Sydney

Port

StKilda ( bugger it )

Gold coast

Martin

dogs

giants

C'wood to win in an ugly brawl to knock the smile off Carlton, and so Buckley can stay as coach for that little bit longer. (Hopefully a lot longer.)

Blues and Pies are 127 wins apiece head to head.... I’m on the draw.

  • blues
  • cats
  • swans
  • pear
  • them
  • gc17
  • tiggers
  • footscray
  • dockers

a lot more 'even' a round than you would have thought last week would be despite a heap of upsets - at this stage i would say i only have confidence in pear and tiggers

Unless Cox takes a viagra and stands up for once, the Blues have this. The pies line up is average

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
