I was very excited about Rosman's potential when we drafted him. At 194 cm and an elite endurance runner already (with speed as well!), He had all the tools for development.

It sounded like he was making some progress up forward last year but I haven't heard much about his progress this year (admittedly I haven't looked).

Seem to recall some really impressive moments/patches from Fraser at least in terms of reading the play / intercepting.  Not sure how well he's going with ball in hand.  Others here might have a better handle here with accuracy/decision making etc.

Lots of interruptions probably a bit hard to gauge where he's at this year.

Reminds me just a tad of a taller version of Phil Pinnell at times when i watch him.

Can't see him holding down a KP at any point as he looks a little fragile physically and that's probably not where he's at anyway.

At least another season at Casey to assess.  Hopefully one where he gets on the park more often than not.

He was drafted at 84 kg, any idea where he is at now?

Could be wrong but my understanding is he's been played mostly as a transitional intercept / running HB for most of this season (when he's been on the park).

Seem to recall more stints (drifting?) forward last season where he looked a little more exciting/showed a bit more?

Website is still saying 84kg Ox.  Could be outta date though.  Still looks pretty lean from the naked eye this season but who knows.  Would think he's put a little on by now.

@Demon Dynastyyeah everything I could find has his draft day weight (84kg) still listed, although I find that hard to believe.

I also found unofficial website with stats for this year. It list positions this year as FB/HBFL so consistent with what you've said, but I wasn't sure if that was just named team positions.

https://vfl.aflmstats.com/player/Fraser_Rosman

It would be great if they could turn him into a replacement for Hibberd (or even Smith) as a flexible running/tall.

Too true.

I recall dropping into the first training session when Jimmy Toumpas came to the club. If memory serves the four new players were doing drills together and I reckon it was Terlich, Matt Jones and one other (maybe Georgiou?).

So Toumpas was super impressive, hitting every kick, clean hands, while the others were quite sloppy.

I thought “We’ve got one here!”...

Wow some names in there that my mind had erased - getting PTSD reading about Terlich and Georguou haha

I would be very interested in the views of our regular Casey watchers.

My view based just on reading casey reports is that he lacks disposal skill and doesn't get it enough.  he is a good mark but still pretty raw.  might be worth giving another year to see if it can come together.

Because of the fact that he was drafted during the pandemic with very little football behind him in his draft year and then again in his first year on the list, Rosman didn’t get enough game time to show what he’s made of and he’s still very much a work in progress. Such players deserve time and patience and I think he’ll get there.

He looks a lot more comfortable in the back line this year, but aside from that, I'd have to agree.

Tend to agree with most of this without knowing whether he’ll make it but he certainly has the athletic traits which clubs favour these days.

He can really roost it.

Biggest kick at the club I’d say. From what I’ve seen, he’s gaining confidence in his ability to impact a game. Also has that elegant knack of seeming slow but having lots of time. Just needs to get it more, and impose physically in contests.

Nailed it. Fraser’s athletic ability is there.  Got good pace and size. He’s a long kick. Limited footy over 2020-21 and this year.  Finesse and footy smarts not quite there right now.
He might be one to drop back to the rookie list for further development to free up a major list spot but with the assurance of getting drafted back in rookie draft (not sure if clubs need to redraft any more or can place back to rookie list).

Rosman  has all the physical tools to be a good intercepting backman, but lacks the most important thing which is footy IQ. He doesn't read the play well enough and gets caught out of position.

Do we persevere with him in that role at Casey when we have 4 KPBs who do read the play well in May, Petty, Lever and Turner?

He started out on the wing but didn't get enough of it due once again to his  footy IQ.

He's 50/50 keep or delist.

How many blokes usually retire/get delisted at the end of each season?? I think he only survives is he isn't in that number.

Majak, Melksham, Baker ahead of him, do we trade anyone? Will be line ball I would of thought..

Still remember around draft time when it came to this selection that I thought we were about to gain a steal in Jack Carroll who I was a big wrap for. Bit deflated when we overlooked him, but quickly jumped on board in support of Rosman.

It was always going to take time with Rosman and while there is certainly athletic traits there, I too question his overall footy IQ.

My thinking is there they're embarking him for the role similar to Joel Smith. Someone who is tall and got genuine speed to play on both talls and smalls. Not only is speed a big asset, but he's probably the fittest player on our list.

Probably the perfect prototype player to play on someone like Jeremy Cameron.

I think he'll get another year on the list imo.

Some interesting observations here - I'm not too sure how many posters have watched many Casey games in forming a view however my take on Rosman is as follows

- can run (I haven't seen much to date to suggest he is genuinely quick like a Hunt or Baker)

- can kick long and fairly accurately over shorter distances

- can take a high mark

- I doubt he will ever be a KP player as he isn't big enough for that (at least for now)

- I note a few have suggested he has poor footy IQ - I'm not convinced about that yet

- I think his biggest challenge is getting stronger over the summer so he can compete physically against mature bodies. By comparison Trent Rivers is a similar age but I would say is physically much more competitive at this stage

He has been tried as a wing with limited success and this year mostly down back where he has been pretty solid. Given some his capabilities if he can build some strength over summer I would be inclined to try him in the F50 as a mobile marking option

Out of contract at the end of the year and nearly 2 years on he is, expectedly, very much a work in progress. We all know talls take time and he hasn't exactly had an ideal start to his career with covid interruptions to the ressies last year. With that in mind, given his height, marking ability and athletic traits I hope we keep him on for at least another year and see if he develops. Not sure has the footy IQ to play midfield/wing but should have the ability to play either end of the ground.

Given our current dearth of tall forward depth, I wonder if the best way to take advantage of his skillset is to be as high half forward lead up player?

Would want to have a solid finish to the year to earn an extension. Watched him closely the last 2 games & he turned the ball over a few times.

I have been a fan of Rosman and Deakyn Smith for a while, but watching Casey games this year, they don't seem to have improved noticeably. Maybe they are playing their roles though.

I hope both are kept and with another pre season and then a season of games, they can take the next step.

Moniz-Wakefield is in the same boat imo - he does do some nice things but like a lot of guys playing VFL needs to be involved for longer within games to start coming into consideration for senior selection

Interesting.

I've watched majority of Casey games this year and I've found Moniz Wakefield has been far more impressive then Rosman and Smith.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
