2020 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

Made up for a poor start at the club last year by working hard over the summer and, as a result, stamped himself as a quality player and a leader of a strong defensive unit.

Date of Birth: 10 January, 1992
Height: 193cm
Weight: 100kg

Games MFC 2020: 17
Career Total: 148

Goals MFC 2020: 1
Career Total: 23

Votes 2020 Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Memorial Trophy: 362 (Sid Anderson Trophy - Second)

Votes 2020 Brownlow Medal:  4

Superb season. Unlucky to miss out on AA selection. Never beaten by direct opponent. Defensive lynchpin. Genuine heartfelt B&F speech. A leader.

I love this bloke.

GUN

I strongly agree with all of the above, what a fantastic effort by Steven May, it is so reassuring to have our N0.1 holding the Fort at full back, our back six can get better and better with SM leading the way.

He is a "Gun".!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May missing the All Australian top 40 is the voting irregularity that should be investigated.

AA season  in my eyes showed why we went after him.  A key back who is so valuable and leads by example. Carries the backline.

Gobsmacked he missed AA, sensational season. Shows the difference between proper preparation and coming back underdone.

For me he should be an official member of the leadership group (dep VC) for 2021.

Stud. What a trade.

I still hope Hogan can resurrect his young career at GWS, I genuinly wish the best for him as someone who has been battling the last few seasons mentally. That being said its one of a very few occasions MFC have come out on top with a trade in recent memory.

Let’s get Giuliani onto it.

Met him just before schoonergate (he had 1 beer) and I could not have been more impressed with him which is not what I was expecting. He acknowledged he didn't arrive in best condition and it drove him to change his training habits which he did.

He has absolute certainty about his ability without being arrogant and as we've seen is not afraid to speak his mind when a player or the team are not up to standard.

He's our best leader by a long way in my opinion.

Absolute gun. Or as my son says “May is a weapon “.

Steven May had a huge year and deserved the runner up position behind Trac in the MFC B&F.

He should have an All Australian Full Back. Robbed.

But really looking to see how he backs it up in 2021.

Perhaps his greatest achievement in a season where he dominated on the field, was exposing the entire All Australian selection committee as knowing nothing about footy.

I love the way he talks. Wears his heart on his sleeve and doesn’t just give out the usual boring cliches.

As for on field, he is a ripper. Hopefully he comes back to preseason in great nick again.

Couldn't have done more.

Absolute star and really should be captain

Don't disagree !

Is the best full back in the league.

Stops the premier oppostion forward and is a high possession gatherer and efficient.

Moore - 13 touches a game

Andrews - 10 touches a game

May - 16 touches a game

Probably lost All Australian because Gunstan and Lynch got a hold of him in the early rounds.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
