2020 Player Reviews: #23 James Jordon

The hard working midfielder was slowly working his way towards making his long-awaited debut at the highest level when a finger injury put an abrupt end to his season. Hopefully, he will get his chance in 2021.

Still out of contract?

Yes

There are others I'd cut first, but it doesn't bode well that he hasn't come close to a senior game over his two years on the list. Doesn't seem to have that stand out trait that will set him above the pack. Maybe a one year contract, if our draft position doesn't improve.

any body seen him play??

He is always spoken about pretty positively, but never really close to breaking into the side. It could go either way for him this off season.

I don't know if you bothered to watch any of Egan's brief reports post the scratch matches, but it was pretty clear that he was extremely close to getting a senior game when the finger injury hit.

I saw him down at Casey a few times in 2019 and liked what I saw. They were playing him mainly off half back that year, and while it didn't look like he'd be a superstar or anything, he was a very good kick and never looked rushed with ball in hand or with his decision making.  Allegedly moved into the midfield this year where he's looking even better.

Not super fast, but not slow either. Reminds me of Bryce Gibbs a bit actually in the way he plays.

Is this the guy we picked up with a 2nd rounder after trading two 2nd rounders to get that pick, and no one on the draft coverage had any idea who he was? Still know nothing about him.

He's an accumulator with vision and an elite kick. Has an uncanny knack of being involved in score involvements.

Leaves no stone unturned with diet, preparation or training.

His time will come.

No, I would say that is a weakness he needs to work on. Far from being a accumulator.

Sounds like something we lack badly.

I really hope we keep him, but seems strange if we rate him so highly why he isn't signed yet.

I'd be shocked if we don't sign him. Only thing I can think is it's due to the uncertainty on list sizes and they probably wanted to sign up players who were being targeted by other clubs first. eg Sparrow and Hunt.

He was in 2018 when they moved him into the midfield.

I have no idea why but I like the kid and want him to make it.

It's because he has two first names.

Think he only had 1 vfl game where he had over 20 touches.

Hard worker, willing tackler, but I don't think he has great upside as a ball winner if he can't use his run to find it on the outside. And his kicking is neat enough but doesn't stand out.

If it comes down prioritising Jordon, Nietschke, Bedford and Chandler I don't think he's clearly at the front of that list just on draft order alone.

I'd have all 4 back if we've got the list spots but it might be via the rookie draft or the supplemental list period or even via Casey.

I thought Bedford had potential to be a good small forward or even wing at a stretch but he hasn’t really been given much opportunity- doesn’t seem to get enough possessions so that’s something he will need to improve on

If you're talking about TAC cup, again he wasn't an accumulator. If you're talking about VFL, then the 18 games he averaged 15.2 disposals per game.

Not really exactly high numbers for a midfielder...

I thought he had a 41 possession game in 2018 when they moved him into the midfield. I could be mistaken.

He was playing school footy majority of that year.

Sorry 2019 for Casey

He’s a skilled youngster who is still only 19 (turns 20 in late December) as he was one of the youngest kids drafted in 2018.  I’m not sure he fits a midfielder (we are overstocked for inside mids) so I think he could be useful as a small defender.  Worth another year and perhaps try him at Casey across half back or defence.

Didn’t we draft and start him at half back and then moved him mid due to limited involvement? I agree if he is going to make it with us then he needs to show worth on a flank. Granted first port needs to be confirmation of his position on the list.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
