Playing out of position he did fine. Fought hard, laid tackles, spoiled well. Didn’t look confident and should have taken a couple more marks

Spare me! This team ethos is built on everyone contributing and playing their role. Weird did his bit tonight so get off his back. He had to ruck more than anticipated because Mitch Brown is not now nor ever will be a ruckman. We didn't help ourselves by kicking long to where their big blokes were and I saw BBB fall over a lot in those packs. Some of Brown's marks weren't paid and the umpiring left a lot to be desired

I thought we'd used his body well at ground level, was used as a link man and did what was asked of him.

Now let’s talk about Ben Brown, totally beaten again in the air & at the contest This has been happening for 2 months now.

The amount of times he runs under the ball and puts one hand up is embarrassing

Weed battled well against a bloke with six centimetres and a fair few kilos on him in a position he normally doesn’t play. My hat goes off to him.

One he starts one grab marking and attacking packs with vigor, he is a regular selection.

For a guy with the body size that he has, he sure doesn’t use it.

Kosi is more of a physical presence than Weid. If no one else will say it, I will - Weideman is a soft footballer. He is definitely one pick that JT did not get right (thankfully he has nailed pretty much every other high pick)

He does some really brave stuff at times but he has poor moments.

I think that’s a factor but lack of athleticism and reading of the play impact just as much. 
 

If he had Lever’s ability to read the drop or Jackson’s mobility the other things wouldn’t be as much of a factor

He was ok tonight and performed exactly as I expected he would.  As Melbourne supporters we have been spoilt by having Gawn for so long.  What we got to see tonight is how most teams fans feel when they play against Gawn.  O'Brien is a decent AFL ruck, a club B&F winner and has had a number of competitive duels with Gawn. Weid played within his limitations, provided a contest, was useful at ground level, tackled quite well but dropped some marks he could've taken.  O'Brien played well but didn't dominate as he could have.  I think he did his job.  Having said that, I'm very happy to have the skipper back on Thursday night.

He did get the odd nice tap but he really didn't bring enough in that first half and I agree we were almost a man down. Just hope it comes together for him a bit more in the next few weeks. 

I thought he did ok in the ruck but was poor in the marking contest - which is his usual performance. He has really good leap on him and has a similar ruck game as LJ, follow up work is also decent. Potentially can be developed further. 

I did see bit of frustration from him tonight so it’s fair to say it’s not for a lack of trying. I think he can sense his AFL career is on the line and is slipping away ever so slightly.

I hope he can build some form in the next few weeks as I’m not sure LJ comes in next week with Gawn.

I thought, considering he has not been a ruckman, he did a pretty good job against a much taller and heavier regular ruck.  Got a few whiteouts, a few tackles.  Sadly his marking still isn't up to scratch but he wasn't outworked, usually halving the aerial contests.

Just wish we were given some idea about Jackson - ready, a few weeks, already moved to Perth???

I thought he did pretty well, did not win the ruck but battled it out and a couple of marks did not hurt.  I though he did do, ok, probably the best I’ve seen him play,

and.   I am Not a fan of his, but tonight he did OK

SWYL - my bringing Jackson into this thread really was related to how many more weeks Sam will need to be #2 to Max - the final word was meant to be tongue in cheek.  🙄. 

Sam tried … sure. He was out of position and against a B grade ruckman in O’Brien.  But O’Brien simply bullied him all night.  As the competitors described it, O’Brien just was the big kid and the school yard and did what he liked.  Weid’s hitouts were mainly v Tilthorpe. 

Weid’s bump on Keays (rather than tackle) saw Keays just bounce away and Weid go to ground. Well … 

Weid fumbled in the contest and didn’t show enough mobility or 2nd efforts. That’s what I was looking for against the standard ruck. Competitive marks … 1.  At lots and lots of contests. 

I like Sam and have met him at several team functions.  He is a good young man. I have backed Sam and desperately want him to be that key forward that we need and he can fulfill. But his intensity and desire and ability to take chances still doesn’t match up.  Sure yesterday he was played out of position and tried but he still didn’t show me the physical side of footy and the agility I was looking for.

I agree with some of what you say, but I don't think O' Brien bullies (not the bullying type) anyone, as I haven't seen him do it this year.

Weideman is under instructions as to how he plays and I think he enhances our ability to get the ball forward from stoppages and centre bounces. This was obvious yesterday more than last week.

He needs to be a little more physical and there was two opportunities that I couldn't have resisted but he did, in stationary mode, but I reckon it's coming. I'm noticing a difference, and I'm hoping he'll just bend the knees a bit more and stick his bum out and get in the way...

So Sam is a part time ruckman who is there to compete but can't win the ruck, only takes the occasional mark when playing forward. So what do people think he offers going forward because as soon as Max and Dogga are back there's no place for him.

That's the point, and it's reflected in his contract and selection. He's depth, but some here don't seem to have caught up with that and are still judging him against his draft order from 7 years ago.
