I still like Weid. Once kossie and one or two others learn to get at his feet when ball is brought to ground things will look up. Also want petty at CHF. he has ability to hold his ground. I think we need another Kossie type ahead of a Brown although happy if we get him.

    I think if we pick up a key forward in Ben Brown with his height and ruck ability in the forward line that could ease some of the heavy work load for the Weid and and free himself to concentrate purely playing key forward bash and crash bringing ball to ground for the likes of Kossie and Spargo. 

    Wied,  Jackson and B Brown could be an awesome combination to watch when they fire.  Who knows if it eventuates

    I can keep Dreaming.

    There was certainly some improvement, but question marks remain. Let's hope Sam can build further on this season.

    He played much better before Jackson got injured. I reckon they'll be a difficult pair as Jackson gains experience.

    I was also pleasantly surprised when I saw the distances Weid was covering in games. Something around 11km as I recall so I guess he also tired toward the end of the season.

    I think he can be a useful no. 2 Bbo but I just don’t see the talent needed to be the no.1 KPF.

    Half glass empty - Two Cairns games for 9 possessions and 1 goal with our finals on the line against 2 dog ordinary clubs/

    Half glass full- 18 goals in 9 mid season games.

    Yeah, he's still too soft in the contest IMO, but doesn't mean he won't get there.

    Yeah just had a read. 

    Considering we were sent to that ridiculous Cairns trip that no other team had to do, and the fact that Weid surprisingly covered a massive amount of ground  (something like 11 kms per game),  Im gonna cut him some slack for fading at seasons end.

    He must deliver next year though.  No reason he cant have a monster season.

    I suspect 5kg more and he may not be running 11km per game to make as many contests, Red. If he can build a better tank, maybe

    Steps forward but he’s still not reaching his potential. That said there was a point when he first came in where he was clunking marks in a way I haven’t seen him do before, and regularly. He should’ve had bags of 4 a couple of times, like Fritta he missed some very gettable goals. 

    I’m not sure he can hold down the number one forward position, I think as a number 2 he is very dangerous. There’s a lot he needs to work on but I felt one of the biggest failings by the FD this season was keeping him out as long as we did. 

    Hopefully a disappointing end to the season won’t hurt his confidence into next year, get him a solid partner up forward and I think he can kick 40-50 goals for us.

    Anyways... maybe I'm being sensitive a bit, but its tough being a forward now isnt it? (with a nod to  bruce)

    2 goals a game is  Coleman territory , and that's when you're team CAN deliver the ball pretty consistency into the forward line. 

    He had done that earlier this season in a shortened version of the game.. certainly gave off a few as well

    Weid will/is tracking to be a fine player... next year is not make or break for him.

    Spot on.
    Go through the top 30 goal kickers In the league and check their ratios, expectations of many supporters are unrealistic when it comes to number of goals players should kick per game.

    Fritsch gets potted by quite a few on Demonland, but few 2nd or 3rd forwards kicked as many goals as he did, and if He improves his goal kicking Will be more than handy for many years.

    The games in Cairns were also pretty wet weren't they? Makes it tough.

    I don't think he does well as the only tall, as he struggles when 2-3 out in the air: he gets blocked from running at it and it looks like he isnt making the contest.

    I think he goes better when others play well around him. TMac being out of form hasn't helped. Jackson seemed to pair well. I think it's about space and positioning, so that he isn't competing against multiple opponents.

    Does that make him a second forward? Or doea that mean he is a KPF who works well in tandem? I think he would probably work ok with any quality second tall up there. 

    Hopefully he can really take more steps though.

    He's a joel selwood when compared to Jack Watts yet for some reason fans dislike Weideman. it's crazy. Weideman is fine. He's playing solo in a team that kicks it to him like [censored], a coach who probably puts him to sleep and he has senior 'mentors' like tom McDonald who he is better than and his past mentors in Hogan who have gone nowhere.  when we have guys like Fritsch kicking behinds all day Weideman kicks a lot of goals in the goal square. its valuable. And so is he.

    Its another big off season for Sam, when you look back on the year he did have some good moments but you can see he has to grow into the role still and learn to finish. If he can improve the finishing he will be a very good player for us.

    I just don't see the mad hunger to kick goals that good KPF shows e.g. I think it was the last game against Essendon he takes the ball 20 metres out from Goal no one behind or in front of him instead of kicking the goal he hand passes to Hunt who runs in and kicks the goal. Every Good KPF I know does not hand off those goals they kick them, they want the goal against their name and believe no one can do it better than me. I just don't see That hunger in the Weid. I just don't see him demanding the ball.

    If he can get that part of his game right he will be a good to very good fwd, he seems to have lost confidence (along with Fritta) in kicking for goal. That can be won back.

    I'm still not convinced he has the burning desire to be a top quality AFL footballer. He seems to be happy coasting along, putting together a so-so 10 year career at a so-so club.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
