Josh Daicos went from a fringe forward to a better player than Phillips last year.

There’s a lot of clubs without proven options on the wing who can train them up.

Apart from Baker we’ve got Harmes, Melksham, Hunt, Fritsch and even Jordon as internal candidates. Richmond took Marlion Pickett (A career half back/mid) and made him a very good wingman in 1 season. With the right coaching it can be done.

Personally I’d stop spending useful draft picks and hefty contracts on players who can’t kick. You get short term improvement but lose long term.

Melksham and Hunt have proven they are not wingers. They have been trialled there and it hasn't worked. Why move Fritsch from his preferred and best position? Our forward line right now is being built around Weideman and Fritta.

Jordon is unproven and Harmes best position imo is Half forward/inside mid.

I agree but if you get him for a nothing pick (since it'd be a cap dump by the Pies), you'd have to take him. Would still walk into our 22.

Not sure he would walk into our team - he’s not replacing Langdon and not convinced he’s an upgrade on others that could play the other wing (Harmes, Salem, maybe even Baker who I’d say is quicker)

I’m not convinced Weid, Brown and Jackson works. But if it does then Fritsch should probably spend at least part of the game somewhere else because 4 taller non tackling players certainly won’t work.

Melksham’s never played wing for us. Or at least not with his career at stake. Harmes played wing pretty well in 16/17 I believe. If Sparrow comes on or Rivers/Salem have to be part of the midfield mix then we could move Harmes.

Phillips is a clear solution that makes him attractive, but I’m just not a fan of the list strategy of plugging holes. Another one will always open up.

If Phillips is so cheap that’s he’s a 3rd rounder and 3 x 400k deal or similar then I’d get doing it. But overall my strategy would be search for genuine quality smart skilled players and trust the coaches to make it work.

He’s absolutely walk in to the best 22. The question is whether a Langdon/Phillips wing duo has enough hurt factor and class to win it all but he’d certainly help short term.

You can always get new coaches. We've had a lot of poor coaching over that time but have we ever had a top quality list with a lot of skilled players? Some quality in the 90's and in the Daniher years but never anything top notch. The President seems to think we've got a top 4-6 list but I don't agree. A Phillips type would help, but there's still plenty of other gaps that need long term solutions.

Is there any indication from a reputable source suggesting we have an interest in Phillips at this stage of the game?

The only times I've seen us mentioned in connection to Phillips in is regards to the Magpies needing to offload players to clear some dollars in their books and the Dees needing a wingman/outside pace.

Media and social media/forums connecting dots.

At this stage the quick summary seems to be:

- Damien Barrett has hinted at him being an option for the Dees.
- Kane Cornes suggested we should target him.
- Tom Browne suggested we would be into him now.
- Alex McDonald (his manager) pretty much said he wants out of Collingwood so he can play wing.

So yeah, doesn't seem to be any rumours coming out of the club yet, just seems to be one of those ones footy people think is an obvious match.

True, but if the player says i only want to talk to X club then there is no point.

Usually his starts out as murmurings and the manager/player will have a plan or club they want to go to. If that falls over the look for anyone interested.

I mean there are whole bunch of situations to play out, for example how required a player is, their price tag etc, but i reckon the pies have told Phillips ot look for options and they are exploring heir options.

As i mentioned price tag can be a big issue as well.

On a side note unless the pies are giving players away, why would any club want to help them with their Cap issue?

I first posted this in September...seemed an obvious target.

The word is that Collingwood have a very tight salary cap and need to re sign Moore and De Goey....

Some players will be squeezed out.

Phillips (even though contracted) could be getable and would be a great compliment to Langdon.

Another hard running wingman.

Firstly. Welcome.

Secondly. Very different players position wise. I don't recall ever seeing Matera play the wing (not a player i followed closely so could be wrong about that).

Not sure if posted elsewhere already but the below is an update from Sam Edmunds on SEN on tom phillips

“Tommy Phillips, same deal. A year to run on a contract, back-ended, more than 550. In fact, they’ve already told him that he could be traded and he’s open to that. I don’t believe there’s been a heck of a lot of interest.

The lack of interest surprises me. $550k is hardly outrageous money. Perhaps there’s more to his poor season than just the emergence of Daicos?

Surely there's something brewing here with us to not be interested...I hope it ain't Treloar on the wing tho!

You're throwing a lot of darts @Demons11 with no hits. You said yesterday that Aliir Aliir was off to the doggies but today Charlie Gardner CEO of Sydney came out and said that he'll most likely stay at Sydney and has only had significant interest from Port Adelaide..

Trade week starts Wednesday and do you really think the CEO would come out and say he is going when he is contracted and as I have said if you don’t like my mail then don’t comment.  I’m happy to share what I heard

It’s a very good wage for a player of his caliber, he is not exactly a star

Well you pretty much said he was off to the doggies? I'm not doubting you mate, but like I said, you've had a lot of misses lately. I still think we should be in the market for Phillips but who knows. Freo are also a chance.

I'll keep an eye on this one.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
