Amazing to think we are 5 pages in, and this post will be the first time his name is mentioned.  There's a bloke that's absolutely gettable, has been a premiership coach and won two as a player, was a ruthless competitor on field, isn't afraid to give a spray where needed.

John Worsfold.

He rebuilt West Coast's list over 3 years (2008-2010), then saw them win 18 games in 2011 and 16 in 2012.  West Coast were generally a bloody hard team to beat when he was in charge (yes, I appreciate the home ground advantage argument) other that those 3 years mentioned above.  Then in his last 3 years at Essendon, they too have generally been around the mark.

He knows what it takes.

I mentioned him in my last post, not a fan, ask Bombers supporters too. Could play for sure but similar issues to what we are having.

Reading this article and i feel that some hard truths and not going hard enough from Greg williams would be welcome (he was let go and would be a good midfield mentor to a number of our players). As for a coach, if it's not goodwin it has to be someone hard who actually can change plans in game and may know some tactics.. (clarkson)

The bloke is past it.  You are spot on about his time with West Coast, but that's an eternity ago.  He's done okay at the Bombers prior to this year, but he would feel like stepping sideways than stepping up if we appointed him.

I know we can do better.

Simpson, Clarkson, Beveridge of the experienced coaches.

I like Yze as the sentiment option, but have no real idea if he can coach.

Beveridge is the most overrated coach ever.  Granted he got them a flag because things fell in place for 6 weeks but has made the finals once since and got pumped.

Worsfold? The same bloke who is coaching Essendon? Ummm no!

he's not coaching essendon; he's just having a superannuation year

reckon the pharmacist will be at freo as a senior assistant or what have you next year

If there is even a slight hint of Clarkson becoming available, you have to go as hard possible.  I can’t see him leaving though.

I'm going to assume you are taking the [censored]!!!!! The bloke is so far past it.. we might as well get Mick Malthouse if you think John Worsfold has it in him.

Freo sacked him because they needed to re-build and he wasn't suited to re-building a team.

we're ready to challenge but our coach isn't capable, in a very similar stage to St Kilda and Fremantle when he took over.

Freo are not far behind where we are currently.

And if you think our list compares with St Kilda's of ~2008-10 you are massively overrating our list

His pre game dackings really get the boys up n about.

That is embarrassing and  awful.  It is up there with the Richmond players touching Chol during their song.  Butler did the same at the Saints.  Must be the Richmond culture.  Never liked Chaplin, a Mahoney mate from Port days.

He was an average player who has added nothing to our club as fwd or a defence coach.

Time to go.

Clearly Clarko.

Surely the Hawks will get rid of him this year.

If he becomes available, Melbourne needs to have the finger on the trigger to get him. I don't think it's happening until 2021 or 2022 though.

Here’s an interesting concept: move Goodwin, Mahoney and Richo on and tell Clarko he can have the salary of all 3 once they’re paid out and off the books. Throw him the keys and tell him nothing/nobody will get in his way. Big risk but clearly we need to take a risk.

It does give us an opportunity to reduce numbers as they will have to under the new soft cap rules anyway.  I think we need still need someone in Mahoneys role.  Clarko and Balme in

How much would all of this cost?

I think someone here mentioned we'd found some mystery money down the back of the couch and were otherwise in sound financial shape to the extent we could afford to pay him out.

Mystery couch money is my kind of money! I hope it's the case, good news if so!

As they say, you gotta spend money to make money! (although I wouldn't know, no money and all haha).

But yeah, an expensive (but decent) list (even if I'm not sold on Lyon).

Less than continually hiring and firing the wrong people and not winning games.

100%

(Plus the things you can't calculate like the years of lost talent wasted by crap coaches and the endless supply of do-nothing support staff), and windows of opportunity.

Do it right, pay the money. It'll be repaid through shiny premiership cups, medals, advertising, Friday night timeslots, membership, sponsors.

Jeez I hope I haven't inadvertently started the most epic fake news story ever, the kind that marketing students at uni study as a text book case of gaslighting everyone. Starts with a blog post, then gets picked up by MSM and off it goes.

Meanwhile 8 weeks later, Goodwin is sacked. Bartlett turns to Pert and says "now, about that back of couch money we found. Can we cut the cheque?" Pert: "Wait what? I thought you found it."

j/k

I'm fairly certain someone put it in the eponymous "Is Goodwin The Chosen One" thread. I think the Deebrief mentioned it too. Blame them, blame them!

Whilst I appreciate that their aging list is a couple of years further on since he left Hawthorn, my view is that Clarko was made to look better by Chris Fagan quietly keeping things in order in the background. I think they've been missing this since he left.

They did start the season well? Wins over Rich and Bris from memory then capitulated in others. Clarko just needs a fresh start IMO. You dont win 4 flags from being a mediocre coach

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
