Yes I have never seen 2 Ruckmen go at each other as hard as that day, ever, not even in Preliminary Finals or GF's..Both took it and gave it, it was extraordinary!

I was only a kid but i remember reading the match reports and seeing Simon Madden whinging about having stud marks all over him.  O'Dwyer lost two teeth and had six stitches as a result of the clash:

I remember watching the replay later that night, and seeing all the Close up Camera shots that you just couldn't see from the crowd perspective. Ian Robertson's commentary is just superb.

Can someone explain to me why Greg Healy was captain? We had Lyon, Viney, Lovett and Tingay. I know Stynes was still raw then so no counting him on the list.

Sugar Healy was a dam good player, he was always a bit in the shadow of of his brother, but he stood up in the midfield during a very tough era. He took a huge bump in the 1990 Elimination against Hawthorn, got up and kicked a goal in one of the all time tough finals of that era.

To be a Captain of Swooper's team must have meant a lot

Yes at 3/4 time players were holding John Northey back from having a go at WC Players, it was a classic!!

Bennett was playing so it was 1990 I think. He and Brian Wilson were really giving it to the crowd.

Today's game is so boring and sanitised!!

Flintoff pretty good.

Strawbs did well against their giants.

Viney typically shocking by foot.

Tony Campbell and Darren Bennet did a lot of falling over but also kicked goals.

Earl the pearl at peak mullet.

Lyon average.

Danny Hughes beaten(a rarity).

Sandy Roberts was a good caller.

I would've been busy in the bedroom at the time.I was unstoppable in 1990.

That was 1990 also. Really was our best chance of a flag. Injuries and the Collingwood V West Coast draw stuffed us that year.

This may be an urban myth, but I seem to recall it being suggested that he was given the captaincy to keep him at the club after we had previously lost his brother to the Sydney Swans.

I think your urban myth is close to reality LDC.

Yes I was there with the Brother and a couple of mates on the outer wing,  where scattered Melbourne supporters were as well.

I remember many leaving as we were 34 points down with 15 minutes to go, the game was out of reach but we never left till the fat lady sang at every game regardless of the result. 

I WATCHED THE DEES SUPPORTERS LEAVING IN SMALL PACKS THE OUTER WAS STARTING  TO EMPTY......  I could see large patches of empty space in the outer.    More than  15 minutes gone in the last 34 points down  the game started to turn Bennet  turned it on kicking 4 in the last  jackson chipped in ...... THE  Dee's supporters were returning to the ground as we were looking a chance it was  surreal when Melbourne was making the comeback.    It was an amazing win.

We did not have a good record out there but the game where Jacko was piffing tinnies back at the dons cheer squad was one I remember.I think it was 1982.

David Neitz broke his leg that game.  Thankfully it was early in the season so he got back before the finals ... and kicked a lazy 6 in the first final vs Adelaide, as did the Wiz.

We were robbed of the flag that year thanks to the stupid final 8 system back then.

That was the only game I went to out there.
Jacko spent the arvo punching on with 'Rotten' Ronnie Andrews.
Windy Hill was mild compared to the one game I went to see at Victoria Park.
I'll never forget being told to " Fork Off Melbourne" by a row of retarded blokes in wheelchairs beside the turnstyles.
That was a real eye opener for a kid brought up at the MCG.
And when they overran us from a 27pt lead at 3/4 time I thought the Zulus were coming.
Truly Feral.

Instead I was at the G watching the Tigers get killed by the Hawks with my cousin and uncle who barrack for Richmond. My uncle was pointing out how bad Melbourne were going all day until the last when I started  to see the A vs B or G vs H or whatever on the scoreboard start ticking over in the last quarter. Still have the replay on VHS which I watched many times over the years as a kid but now with the wonders of YouTube the whole game is up as per the OP.

This is just too funny Doc, I was 13 at the time and mum didn’t allow me to go to Windy Hill that day with my uncle to watch us. Don’t know if she was frightened by the locals there or what. Instead I was also at the G, mum sent me with my Richmond supporting uncle and cousins to watch them get pantsed by the Hawks. 

We were sitting second level of the Olympic stand, I remember my uncle turned his attention to our game on the radio in the last and the people around us started cheering our comeback. Watching the replay the day after one passage of play has stuck with me ever since. The Viney tackle on Ezard in the last quarter.

Classic, you would have been just above me - I would have been in the Richmond members area on ground level in the blue seats if memory serves!

You missed something special, I and my daughter and a few mates who didn't follow either side were standing behind the goals to which Melbourne were kicking and had a great time during that last quarter.

They were the top side and you just never won out there at any time, let alone when you're 6 goals down halfway through the last quarter.

12 months later at the same ground didn't end so well.

The late S Clark had a set shot for goal after the siren with half the Essendon membership base on the ground to put him off. Alas he didn't make the distance and we lost by 6 points.

I ran into Simon Madden at a lunch at the MCC about 5 years ago (and a very pleasant bloke he was): asked him in a rather tongue in cheek way about Steve O’Dwyer and was surprised to learn the Madden saw him occasionally and that they were on good speaking terms. And that “Strawbs” still looked very slim and fit”!  So, what happens on the field stays on the field (at least with those two).

And yes living in West Brunswick at the time, I went to that match a shortish tram ride away.
