TEAMS: Rd 09 vs Port Adelaide

It's an interesting team.

Neither player has been replaced with a similar player.

Who takes Jetta's role in the backline?Ā

What role will Sparrow play as it won't be Bennell's?

What role with TMac play and how will we line up forward of centre with him, Weideman and Jackson?

It is about time Sparrow got picked.

I said some similar things in the changes thread, titan.

Do we shift a Harmes, Brayshaw or Jones as part of the back line rotation?

Conversely, do one of those above go into the forward line rotation?Ā  I could see Jones running the wings and resting across half forward, and we know Harmes is capable of playing there as well.

And the three talls will be fascinating.Ā  Do they push Tom up field and use his tank to run his man ragged, or do they push Jackson up there to make use of his athleticism and to do the rucking forward of centre?

Either way I think we have plenty of options, which is a good thing for tomorrow night.

Port Adelaide going in with the one ruckman.

If we do not capitalise on this then you can almost shut up shop for the season. Can't stress how important our mids take advantage of Gawn this weekend.

Couldn’t agree more mate! If the midsĀ and Maxy are on key, we should have a good win.

Enter a wild TMac.Ā  At least Gawn wont need to cop such a battering.

Indeed. Ā I think it will make the opposing coach. And our own think differently and move players around. I can see changes during the game. Who would think goody would alter anything but I can see it.Ā

With so many games in a short time we do need to play most of the list who are fit and firing. Ā We will see .....

Ā

Got the impression in the post-game on Sunday that the boys remembered what happened last year against Port, so I'm excited to see all of May, Viney, Hannan, Kozzy and Sparrow in the team to bring some physical intensity.

Watching their first game players laugh in our face as they were pulling us to shreds, especially Gawn was hard to watch, hopefully payback this week.Ā

Although he unloaded one or two of those crappy bombs last week, Jones is generally good with his kicking into the forward line and at goal. So I hope he's wing / forward.

Of the talls, I hope Tmac plays up the field to provide marking options with Max. It's where he is finally starting to get some touch back this season.Ā

Both the Macca boys have had some bad form runs over the years and copped some flack from supporters (me included). I hope Tmac really stars with his tank and marking around the ground over the next few weeks. It could really lift our setup and attacking ability as well as taking pressure of Maxy.

All good points there, Brownie.Ā  I think you're spot on about Jones, too.Ā  I think they'll probably give him that role and I think he can do a good job for us there.

One thing about having the three talls in the side is that I think it will actually take some pressure off Tom, and whether he plays more up the ground or closer to goal, I think having Weid and Jackson there for support can only be a good thing for his confidence.

Tmac selection just doesn't make and senseĀ  to me. He's looked wooden all year and hasn't been target at all. I'd love to be wrong but I just don't know what he brings to the team at the moment. We have looked so much better up forward without him.Ā

Sorry about some negativity but in a pretty good team, Spargo as emergency. I just cannot see what he does? A few good games in 2018 and suddenly gets a possible Gig. Surely his 3 goals he cost with direct turnovers in Rnd 1 Should have been enoughĀ  to convince?? I just don't see what he offers! Surely better to play others Hell give me Nibbler anytime! Having said that I expect our Best Win of the season occuring. I have just got a feeling. This is a good team that matches up wellĀ

Good point. Tmac should be able take his share of down the line kicks from defence and give maxy a much needed chop out. Brisbane smashed him at every opportunity.Ā

The blues raised the issue of the treatment cripps cops, and no doubt with justification.

But I doubt there is a player in the league that cops what maxy does. Im sure he wouldn't want it raised but the AFL should with the umpires, behind closed doors.

You don’t reckon young players can improve?

he played some footy in 2018 as a kid. He has some deficiencies but ease up himĀ

and he isntĀ playing he’s just in the 25

This is the game. Win this one and we are still alive, drop it and it will be season over.Ā
17 games.Ā
3 Talls in against 1 Port RuckmanĀ

Crunch time Goodwin

What Brisbane did was smart for what they had, they read Max's tap and made sure to put immense pressure on the player receiving that and affected the turnover. Our ball winners were all fumbles for most of the night and that split second proved critical. So frustrating to see taps go straight to our players only for the opposition to come away with the clearance.

As for the team it's an interesting and different look. My guess is that with Jetta out Lockhart will be given higher responsibilities back there and Harmes/Brayshaw will go back to help at times.Ā

I confess I'm not totally familiar with what type of player Sparrow is. Will we expect to see him more forward of the ball, in the middle, or in defense?

I'm happy to see us having a go at playing three tall in the forward line. We watched in 2018 TMac and Weid work well together at the pointy end of the season, it would be great to see them do it again.Ā

Bennell out is not a surprise, I think he will be on a weekly rotation rather than backing up matches. Still can't believe he missed that goal vs Brisbane, that really felt like a gut punch.

Port are without McKenzie and Burton. Staples in their back half.Ā
Also moplop and Marshall. Add to that Bonner and Lycett.
they have had almost no injuries. I reckon it’s a good time to themĀ

One thing that struck me in the last game was the lack of blokes who go in to support when guys get roughed up.Ā

Outside of Steven May they basically don't support their teammates.Ā

I'd much rather see a free kick be given away than the captain get roughed up and noone stand with him/

A bit surprised tmac comes in. George on the outer got it right on the dl podcast.

He also made the point that they have a sketchy backline, particularly in terms of their bigs. Even thougjĀ I expect tmac to play high half forward, almost a winger (which is how bennell was used) the three tallsĀ will really stretch their defence.

Should have guessed benell might be out, one for management but more that I doubt goody would have been thrilled with his intensity. One example stood out - his half hearted attempt to tackle 'Rainer man' (Gerard please stfu) who bounced off him and went inside 50.

Like swallow in. New players bring an energy. Expect he will plays jetts role.

I reckon we will win. But no way our season is over if we lose. Beat two bottom four teams and we are 5-5 still. If we win we could really move up the ladderĀ

So you would prefer aĀ free kick, reversed free kick or a 50 given away, sure Goodwin would love that if it was in our defensive 50

You just hit the offending player hard and legitimately next time you get the chance

Ā

I don't know what has gotten into the selectors of late they are making all the right calls.

Tmac, Weideman and Action all in the same forward line looks scrumptious especially for the kick down the line to help elevate us under pressure it just looksĀ dangerous.

We could really go to another level tommorow night with all these options, they must have really looked into the way Brisbane smashed Port at the Gabba 3 weeks ago.

Im feeling like Big Kev at the moment.

I'm excited.

Carn you mighty Rucking Dees.??

No saty, i'd prefer to see our team stick up from each other, rather than just watch it, and if that eventuates into a free kick from time to time, that's much better. look at the Hawks when they had all their success. they didn't mind sticking up for each other even if it meant from time to time it cost them a free kick.Ā

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: ā€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?ā€ Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.Ā
