Our record the last 27 games (Operation Get Ross Lyon)

Recommended Posts

6 wins , 21 losses ...  and thats off the back off 2 (fluke) finals wins in 2018.

MFC Grand Final Record since 1964    -  2 Grand Finals  -  0 wins, 2 losses (flogged both times)

Ross Lyons Grand Final record  -   3 Grand Finals   -   1 draw, 2 losses

He was 1 unlucky bounce away from being a premiership coach.  Took the perennial laughing stock Fremantle to the big dance.

GET ROSS LYON

We will not survive if Goodwin, Mahoney, Richardson, Bartlett etc stay on.    The only one I want to keep is Darren Burgess.  The rest can go.

Serious question, and I'm interested to see what others think:

Is Ross Lyon really the answer for us as a club if Goodwin were to be sacked or step away?  This is purely hypothetical as I'm not in the sack Goodwin camp right now.

We know what he brings to the table.  We know that he is very good tactically and has taken both St. Kilda and Fremantle, which is a pretty good achievement in my book, to Grand Finals.

However, we also know that he doesn't bring much to the table in terms of attacking footy, and he left both of those above clubs in a bit of a shambles when he left.

Is he the type of coach we really need?  I'm not sold on him to be honest, but I'm interested in what others think.

True Wiseblood, but if he leaves us in shambles one day id prefer he left us in shambles having played in a Grand Fina and having at least an opportunity to win one!

Without Riewoldt & Goddard, he would have done nought.

And he was never able to get CHF  functioning.  that is what cost him the flag.  Oh, and not enough speed on the wings.

He persisted with milne as the main scorer for far too long, in his tenure.

Ring any bells anyone.?

Now what has he done for Freo.?  Well he got them off the bottom,  and back again, didn't he.

Aim even higher

Offer the Big $ dollars ? to Clarkson

4 Premierships, could have easily been 5

including 3 in a row

Clarkson was a Demon for 2 seasons, he can attract a serious Key Forward

I was a Lyon fan at the Aints, but he became far too defensive later in his Coaching Tenure

Clarkson or bust for me. But there probably won’t be a MFC by the time he is free.

I really like Goodwin good media preformer and the players seem to love him, if this doesn't work we have to get a experienced coach of the Clarkson mould, I'd go hard for Woosha who's on his way out of the bummers. GET his own team in and say your not leaving till you've won a flag. No 3 year succession rubbish you do the full job.

I'm not sold on him either, mainly because of this.

He went to Fremantle when they already had the cattle and when they were at their prime.

In first 4 years he took them to 4 straight finals series, but along the way neglected the development of the younger players to make the success sustainable.

Year 5 they dropped off a cliff and finished 16th. At that point they had 8 or 9 players at 32+ years old, of which many were still amongst the best they had

Year 6 & 7 they finished 14th and year 8 he was sacked, after finishing 13th.

Same thing happened at St Kilda where he ground the old crew in the ground and had no younger players coming through behind them. Once the Riewoldts, Goddards, Hayes and co. were gone they also dropped off a cliff, culminating in a spoon a couple of seasons after Lyon left.

So yeah. Whilst he is seemingly quite good at grinding every last drop out of the players he has as quickly as possible, there doesn't seem to be much of a long term vision.

I crave success for our current crop (who IMO are a top 8 side, at least on paper) as much as anyone, but I wouldn't want that to be an the expense of the long term development, and find myself back here in 5 or 6 years time reading all the same things.

All that aside - game style. Yuck!

Top Dollar ? OD

Seriously what else does he have to prove at Whorethorn?

The elusive 13th would be a proud asset on a CV

We would not be able to afford either. I am not in the each Goodwin camp either although I am approaching it. I am hoping to see a coming of age like we saw with Hardwick at Richmond.  If we were to put money into any other coach, I’d go Chris Fagan. He’s done wonders at Brisbane. He may want to return to Melbourne.

Not sure if Lyon is the man for us, but at this stage anyone would be better than what we've got. My only concern with him is can he implement a modern gamestyle that isn't so defensive. Lyon has at least coached teams to sustained finals runs. He got both the Saints and Freo competitive for blocks of 4-5 years and into grand finals. He's done more than any Melbourne coach in my lifetime!

What other coaching options are available? Obviously Clarkson or someone of that ilk would be brilliant, but realistically who is out of contract or looking to move?

I think we all need to understand the financial position of the club, we can't afford to sack a coach and the AFL doesn't have the money to give us to do so.

We are stuck with Goodwin, we need to surround him with high quality assistant coaches.

As I've said elsewhere, Ross Lyon would be an ordinary move for our club. A dour coach with a 2005 game plan is not going to get us anywhere.

It's Clarkson, Yze or even Beveridge for mine.

A stop loss might be needed at some point though Dr.

If we can't get a decent string of wins on the board by about Rnd 12 we might potentially be looking at another 10k members (or more!) down next season.  The financial loss of that scenario might outweigh or go close to matching the pay out cost.  And we all know it's easier to keep members than to recruit them.

A new coach (with cred) ....and hope springs eternal.

We cannot afford to 1- get rid of Goodwin or 2- get Lyon or Clarkson so forget about it.

We cannot afford not to act if Goodwin doesn't turn this around

If a Gun Coach was employed Memberships would pay for it.

Like most on here are saying COVID-19 has basically saved Goodwins coaching career. He’ll have this season to hit rock bottom and make something of something next if he is to stay on beyond 2021. That is the best scenario.

Afraid this is going to be a long painful couple of years.

Very valid point Rusty, at the moment unless I see improvement by end of this season in the areas that Goodwin keeps telling us they are working really hard on, then I won’t be signing up for next year (1x adult + 3 kids). I’m sure there are many in similar position as me, I’m so bored with seeing the same issues week in week out. Up until the last two weeks I was firmly in the “give them more time” camp but the past two games have swung me (off the back of 18 months of seeing the same issues). New coach, I would sign up no worries.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
