I seem to recall reading this can be longer (5 days or so?).  Testing too early can result in a higher percentage of false negatives.

Test kits are not all testing the same way either in some cases and in some cases the test kits are faulty.

Agreed. Can you imagine if this weeks game had gone ahead with an infectious McKenna playing? Our whole team would have to have quarantined for 2 weeks or more derailing our year and plunging us further into financial choas.

According to Purple, the AFL are pushing for McKenna to be the only player quarantined for Essendon.

Will round 5 be completed?  Rich are scheduled to play WCE in Queensland.  Presumably the AFL negotiated an exemption from Qld's 14 day quarantine for AFL teams. 

But with the fresh outbreaks across Melbourne, Queensland has identified 31 Local Government 'hot spots' in Greater Melbourne.  If it gets worse and knowing that covid has hit the AFL will the Qld gov't withdraw the quarantine exemption and Rich can't play WCE?  Then round 5 becomes compromised.

And the WA government doubling down on its 14 day hotel quarantine requirements even for returning AFL players. 

So Every chance there will be a 'catch-up' round at some stage with some teams having a bye.  That will help bring the season back into sync.

I was about to post this.... I cannot see any Victorian teams being allowed to cross our borders up here without the 14 quarantine period. Palache (rightly so) has stood to her word through the entire pandemic and simply will not take any risks. It was all over the radio that all of greater Melbourne is considered a hot spot and anyone travelling from there (even if they are an essential worker) will be required to serve a mandatory 14 day quarantine.

Yes, they want the government to take a 'broad view' in applying the meaning of 'close contact'. 

But, I just don't see how the Health Department can allow that as Ess train, live and shop right in the middle of the major hot spots of recent outbreaks.  Ditto other people in their households.  If the incubation period is 1-2 weeks then there is a risk to the wider community and not just other AFL teams.  The government must put community concerns before AFL games.

The government has already messed up with Cedar Meats, Hotel quarantines, and the BLM rally (a fourth protester has now tested positive).  They just can't afford any more risks.  Time to take a firm stand and stop pandering to causes/vested interests.

My understanding is that symptoms generally develop five to six days after exposure but it can take up to 14 days and you can only really count on a positive test if you are showing symptoms (I know a person can test positive if they are asymptomatic however the chances of that are low). Therefore, common sense tells me those players that came in to close contact with McKenna should have to also isolate for 14 days.

Do we know if those players (and presumably some staff [footy and admin]) who came into contact with McKenna are isolating right now? What about the people that the other players in the group of 8 subsequently were in contact with? Are they isolating? And the people they came into contact with? Flow on effect is huge.

Well the friends that McKenna visited on Friday have been told to quarantine so players that were training with him would 100% have to be quarantined

Yes. Everyone at the clubs is supposed to be isolating as of Saturday lunchtime (when the positive result came back). 

Ethan, everyone deemed a close contact by DHHS will have to isolate/quarantine for 14 days. Th issue is who DHHS define as a close contact. 

On that point there is growing body of evidence that it does not transmit easily outdoors. The BLM marches here in the USA have seen very little transmission so far, though masks apparently might play a big role in this. It has been two weeks since ours and there have been no clusters. In both examples it is possible there still might be an uptick in cases but thus far outdoors look pretty safe.

Indoors is an entirely different matter. We wont be returning the office in Victoria any time soon

Swapping around who plays whom in rounds is not as straightforward as it might seem at first sight given the logistics (both normal and now) and the complication that some teams have already played each other.

I'd suggest most people walking around outside aren't spitting and blowing snot out of their noses, tackling sweaty teammates like McKenna was in the TV vision over the weekend. On this basis, I don't think you can apply normal rules BM

A contrary view:  We put on a brave face (knowing that we will get ZERO from the AFL).  We use it to show what we are made of, that we can handle what comes our way, and show the team that we are not sooks like the WEAGLES.  The season is screwed like a pig in an Arkansas barn, so why damage our internal build for the sake of this? The AFL will always prioritise the big clubs, so we get scraps.  If we had a great hit out on Sunday, and the guys are all ‘in it together’ we can do more good for our culture for the long term than getting a hollow benefit from GIll and the braincell-allergic dunderheads at AFL house.  Pick your battles.  Choose the sexiest pig.

I'm not applying them to the bombers situation specifically. Though only those he trained with directly are at risk of being considered close contacts
