We let go of Frost because we thought OMac would work better, but he isn't in the team. We let go of Hogan because we had Weid coming up, but he isn't in the team. WTF???

Beggars belief. If I were either I would be looking for a new home. Probably enjoying himself. Out of Victoria living at Manly getting paid and no blame for our results.

Garry Lyon said last night he hasn't developed as the club would have liked.

But I ask who is there for Sam to learn from, be mentored by?  We have no experienced fwd.  We have no fwd coach or a coach who has played forward.  Who has been brought into the club to fast track his development?  He is a kid and it is widely known that 'talls' develop more slowly than say midfielders.

His confidence was shot last year after the media brouhaha over his contract, after which he deleted his social media accounts and he didn't even want to leave home.  Not to mention the game winning shot he missed in a game last year.

Feel for him if true.  Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight.  Maybe he just likes playing footy and doesn't want any attention.  He wouldn't be alone in that regard.

ps    I  truly despise the media.

100% agree. WTF is this club doing with it's forward coaching?

I am so disappointed in the club as a whole, not just Goodwin.

Mahoney and the board need to take more responsibility for this mess.

Why have we not had Schwarz, Neitz or Lyon down at the club working with Weideman from day dot? All of these guys were competitors, they attacked the football and they demanded the ball from their teammates. If not them, then find someone who will help him out, because it sure is not going to be coming from Rooke, Chaplin or any of the other lightweights we have running the forward line.

Weideman is lacking in all of these respects and we should have been constantly working on these parts of his game. Instead we waste crucial development time playing him in the ruck or letting him chase kicks around the ground. It is alarming how badly we develop players over and over again.

Let's go one better and have a Nick Reiwoldt, Wayne Carey, Mathew Lloyd or a David Neitz come down and spend some time with Weideman.

They should have been there from the first day Jackson walked in the door, regardless of Weideman's from or place in the team. We paid a lot for him and you'd think it would be smart to give him the very best resources to develop his game. Would not harm Weideman either, so it's a win-win.

Also, what is stopping Weid from getting in touch with these guys himself? He needs to get his skates on in the next 6-12 months or he'll be lost to the game

Interesting the clubs gone fairly quiet on his performances in the scratchies.

I mentioned it in the scratch match thread but when watching the second half I saw him kick at least two goals and he presented nicely throughout. Was one of the standouts for sure.

Probably because they wouldn’t have towed Goodwin’s party line and picked faults in his game plan!

To add: I think Neitz was at Hawthorn for a while, but certainly was around the club for the 2018 finals. He’d be perfect for mentoring, you’d think.

He also got a mention in Matt Egan's summary of the scratchy the week before, how he was very close to getting all aspects in order. Given he kicked a few on Sunday one would think he is every chance of playing Saturday.

Name a forward in our team that is setting the world on fire apart from Hannon.

You are clutching at straws if you think Hannan is setting world on fire.

It all stems from our game plan and disposal though, not many forwards in the competition would be on fire playing for Melbourne

"Bennell, Weideman among standouts in practice match"

Unleash them then

That may not worry him! Some people realise that senior level of the game is not for them.

If we don't pick both of them this week then I will spew up.....

I'd also prefer ANB to Hunt at this point. Incredibly, is probably a better disposer of the ball.

We could have the best game plan & disposal in the AFL, but when you’ve got a pack of flankers & no key position in the forward line it won’t make a shred of difference

Its all about selection & playing to your abilities
The coaching panel are woeful & need to be replaced

Has to come in, and we have to drop one of our mid-sized forwards. Probably looking at either Melksham or Hunt (I'm thinking the latter given his last two weeks).

Give him 4-5 weeks as a lead up full forward, use TMac/Thommo as the chop out rucks, and give him one hell of a speech that we are backing him in and we believe in him. Because the way he hasn't been played this year with our forward line being completely inept has been baffling.

I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING THIS FOR WEEKS. GIVE WEIDEMAN 5-6 WEEKS. I DONT CARE IF HE DOESNT GET A KICK IN WEEK 1.
He’s critical to our future and we need to back him in. If he doesn’t stack up, then ok set for trade and get best outcome for all.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
