Sickening that GC got a before r1 priority pick last year and a mid 1st this year. We are a far worse team.

I think we should start having a sook to the AFL to step in and remove our coach. Will work way more wonders than a pp.

So, I've been watching a fair bit of football over the weekend, and I've got GWS/North running in the background now. Honestly, there's been weird results and disjointed performances all over the place.

What if Carlton were actually pretty good? I mean, once they found their range, the long kicks and leads on the wings were pretty well organised.

Meanwhile, we managed to turn on the most dominant single quarter of football for the whole round.

I dunno, in the light of day, I'm far from thinking the sky is falling in.  It'll take weeks for a real pattern to emerge to performances whether that is individual or team.

Several of our allegedly better players had pretty poor days, but right now our ledger stands 1/1 in round 2.

Surely that's the end of the gift giving to GCS. Matt Rowell is a star as will Noah Anderson be. They now have depth players who would make our 22 (and most others) with ease.

Agree.  With all the unusual conditions, odd results and weird games, it's too early to draw many conclusions.  But clearly we have some issues.  I've not watched all the games, but is there any team so far which doesn't appear to have issues?

I don't think we played badly the same way as we did last year- piling the ball into the F50 and not scoring.  In the part of yesterday's game when we were poor, we weren't getting it into the F50 at all.  Some will take comfort from that and some will despair even more.

If you want a lesson in what is wrong with the game at present watch a quarter of the Giants v North game. One of the most skilful teams of recent times scragged and crowded to an almost complete stop. Congrats North for being able to do it but spectator wise an absolute turn off.

Obviously way too many players on the ground these days.

North played the game along the boundary line so it was either ball up or throw in. GWS just could not get it moving.

The sun played havoc with the camera coverage as well.

On the issue of camera coverage the Gold coast game seemed to be covered from a higher camera angle which allowed wider coverage while not showing the empty stands. Worked well but it may just be a quirk of where the cameras are positioned at Carara.

Watching the Essendon. Bombers look fast and cleaned. So only flew into Sydney this morning then had to wait a couple of hours.

Out of all the teams I've watched this weekend, Essendon look the best so far.

Of all the football I've seen so far this round, our first quarter is the best so far.

Pity our second half was the worst I've seen so far this round.

Maybe we are on to something here.  North flew in today as well and knocked off the Giants.  Perhaps getting in on the day of the game might become a new trend... ?

True that, it was a mix of both.

Sydney applying the same pressure as what Carlton did to us and now shutting them off from their game style.

If we can play 4 consistent qtrs like we did with our first yesterday then we can absolutely knock some of these good sides off.

Having reflected today a bit, whilst I remain exceptionally disappointed, I've come to think this as well.

I genuinely think we've produced some of the best football of this round.

I don't know if we're capable of producing it for four quarters but for my own sanity I'm going to let myself believe we can, and we'll learn from yesterday what we need to do when opponents make changes at the contest.

Absolutely.

Plus the Bombers have no real tall forward targets, which you could argue we lacked a bit on Saturday, so once the pressure is applied they don't have that quality tall to fall back on.

I too have done some reflection mate and even watched the first quarter on replay. It was right up there with some of the best performance I've seen since the 2018 finals against Geelong.

And you're right mate, our first quarter was as good as any this round. We really do need the likes of Melksham, Lever, McDonald and even Bennell to hit form to play consistent 4 quarter footy.

They're quick on the outside. On the inside they're useless. Really hope Viney, Oliver, Gawn and Petracca tske advantage of this.

mckernahan (198cm) and stringer (192cm, but arguably 'plays' taller) are pretty decent targets

McKernan is okay.  Yes, he's kicked a couple after half time, but he's only an average player.

And Stringer isn't a tall target.  He's like Petracca.  You need bigger blokes than that propping up your forward line.

i feel like i see stringer take a lot more marks than trac

mckernan would be our #1 key forward target if he was in our side

interesting numbers - do you have splits for i50 marks vs around the ground?

Stringer took 31 marks I50 compared to Petracca with 23.  So not a massive difference overall, but he clearly took a few more.  And he of course kicked a few more goals.

They are pretty similar players to be honest.

i guess - i just see trac as more a ground level player and stringer more damaging in the air

Both have a ripping set of hands and are capable of playing taller than their height.

Also, and this is unbelievable really, but Jayden Hunt took 29 marks inside 50 last year.  Shaun McKernan took 26 marks inside 50.  Here is the link if you don't believe me:

mckernan from only 16 games tho

that hunt was our top ranked marking player i50 followed by fritsch - who barely played there til the last five or so games of the year - says volumes

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
