He was a great man, Jim Stynes. Keep in mind that till not that long ago every indigenous player was racially abused by opposition players, supporters, a kind of reflection on how they had been treated since Mr Cook and Co brought on Philips' voyage.

Otherwise I think I might argue with this choice.

Col kicked the winning goal at the death from in front of the small grandstand . It was at least as long and high as the legendary Malcolm Blight shot at Princes Park .

(Source) Plenty of SANFL stars didn't translate to the VFL but tell me this wouldn't have come in handy... Sadly, Michael Graham was a player that Melbourne was chasing in the early 1970s but we couldn’t persuade him to cross the border to Victoria. He had a long and successful career in Adelaide but (from my perspective at least), it was a tragedy that he didn’t play at the highest level at the time. There was another player at the time who would have come in very handy and he was Glenelg ruckman Peter Carey who Melbourne was associated with at the time. Carey became a games record player with the SA Tigers playing well over 400 games. Having those two in the side at the time in the mid-70s might have made a big difference to the club.

About his last game he apparently had a punch up with Carl Ditterich in the changing rooms. He was pretty feisty on the field but one would think lucky to survive a stand up with Carl On what criteria did you include Henry Coles ? Pretty sure he was Greek and had anglicised his name. And for the record I can't remember any mentions that Lovel was Indigenous early in his career. All the early talk was of his link to the Tasmanian woodchopping Lovells
May 30, 20205 yr Can't really fault the list. I think Farmer reached the greatest heights so no.1 is sealed. Flash for what he turned into can't be ignored, a great career and always someone you were glad was on our side.
May 30, 20205 yr Everyone is entitled to their opinions but it amazes me some rate Davey higher than Farmer. Farmer dominated finals and came close to winning us a premiership off his own boot. Davey was a Good kick, revolunised the way forwards play with intense pressure but he was no Farmer.
May 30, 20205 yr I'd hope by the end of his career with us that Steven May would feature somewhere in that list.

One of my favourites on the 'G, played well there. Not a great standout but certainly from the spectators' stands, a big contributor and consistently capable. Colin Graham, on the other hand was an enormous talent, wasn't he?

May 25, 2025May 25 Author 5 years on, and after Sir Doug Nicholls round, I thought I’d reset my view of the top 10 indigenous players to wear the red and blue for the Melbourne footy club. This is based on the players I’ve seen play and that does include Colin Graham. Kozzzy and Steven May now right up there. 1- Jeff Farmer 2- Aaron Davey3- Kozzzy Pickett🏆4- Steven May🏆5- Nev Jetta6- Matthew Whelan7- Andy Lovell8- Liam Jurrah9- Colin Graham10-Sean CharlesSpecial mentions to Garlett Byron PickettAustin Wonamieri On 04/04/2020 at 14:27, spirit of norm smith said:Agree. Many of our indigenous stars came and went too soon. Loved their excitement and cannot wait for Pickett and Bedford to show their amazing pace and skills.
May 25, 2025May 25 Jumping Jurrah was always fun to watch. Some big names here.Obviously Jeff Farmer for most but KP is rapidly moving up the list.
May 25, 2025May 25 Forwards always get the glamour and plaudits. And while Farmer is probably the best I had embarrassingly forgotten about Jetta.Shame on me. Used to be my favorite player. One worthy of wearing a cape while playing and didn't get the attention because he was not booting five goals each week. But Farmer was better. It's just one has sentimental favorites.

May 26, 2025May 26 No-one can de-throne the Wizard. But if Kozzie stayed here his whole career he'd have the best shot of anyone.
May 26, 2025May 26 Farmer well out in front of this list. But Kozzie is rapidly catching him. I'm glad Whelan and Jetta get the love they deserve. Being defenders their skill and talent often gets rated lower for some reason. Sean Charles could have been anything. He had patches of games where he looked disinterested and detached, but when he came to play it was breathtaking. Steven May is the best fullback I have seen at the Dees and deserves his high position on this list.
