Who did?

I remember Jimmy Stynes when president, referring to Charles and the club not supporting him enough when he was injured, something Jim was keen not to happen again.

He was a great man, Jim Stynes.

Keep in mind that till not that long ago every indigenous player was racially abused by opposition players, supporters, a kind of reflection on how they had been treated since Mr Cook and Co brought on Philips' voyage.

Do you mean Jaime Bennell? Otherwise I think I might argue with this choice.

Colin Graham....simply for that 60 m torp at Moorabbin in the 70s to win it. 10 goal last Quarter. And Ross Brewer’s effort.

How many other ‘Landers there to witness that win?

Yep. Wasn't the umpire Rowan James. A very good indigenous umpire.

I would have Whelan at the top of my tree.

Glenn James?  ( I doubt you're referring to Rowan Sawers!)

Ah yes ,  we had a gale behind us to the South Rd end in the last quarter and even  nearby Saints supporters at 3/4 time  were worried.  Col kicked the  winning goal  at the death from in front of the small grandstand .  It was at least as long and high as the legendary Malcolm Blight shot at Princes Park .

And we could have had his cousin brother who was the real star of the family. (Source)

Plenty of SANFL stars didn't translate to the VFL but tell me this wouldn't have come in handy...

Sadly, Michael Graham was a player that Melbourne was chasing in the early 1970s but we couldn’t persuade him to cross the border to Victoria. He had a long and successful career in Adelaide but (from my perspective at least), it was a tragedy that he didn’t play at the highest level at the time.

There was another player at the time who would have come in very handy and he was Glenelg ruckman Peter Carey who Melbourne was associated with at the time. Carey became a games record player with the SA Tigers playing well over 400 games.

Having those two in the side at the time in the mid-70s might have made a big difference to the club.

Yes one for the ages Was there that day don't recall Graham.

Henry Coles could play a bit.

He must be close to the bravest footballer in the world.  About his last game he apparently had a punch up with Carl Ditterich in the changing rooms.  He was pretty feisty on the field but one would think lucky to survive a stand up with Carl

On what criteria did you include Henry Coles ?  Pretty sure he was Greek and had anglicised his name.

And for the record I can't remember any mentions that Lovel was Indigenous early in his career.  All the early talk was of his link to the Tasmanian woodchopping Lovells

Can't really fault the list. I think Farmer reached the greatest heights so no.1 is sealed. Flash for what he turned into can't be ignored, a great career and always someone you were glad was on our side.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but it amazes me some rate Davey higher than Farmer.

Farmer dominated finals and came close to winning us a premiership off his own boot.

Davey was a Good kick, revolunised the way forwards play with intense pressure but he was no Farmer.

Now that you have mentioned him, Radar, it is hard to forget the contributions over time made by Ross Brewer. One of my favourites on the 'G, played well there. Not a great standout but certainly from the spectators' stands, a big contributor and consistently capable. Colin Graham, on the other hand was an enormous talent, wasn't he?

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
