If this is true - then this article from Vanuatu may be a good read. It's the boredom that makes it hard.

Maybe we should be stockpiling board games and brushing up on the rules of those card games we once used to play.

Just play the matches as per the existing fixture with the only persons allowed into the ground being 150 Cheer Squad members from each participating Club (pre-tested for the virus). Everybody will miss out on blockbuster game revenue but the AFL itself retains the broadcasting right revenues and at least the stadiums won’t be deadly silent.

That is a possibility

The World Stock Markets are in Free Fall

The Coronavirus does not affect children or the young (almost)

It could be planted quite easily.

A possibility....

Obviously I don't know;  but it started in dead centre China,  has overtaken Sth Korea and Japan,  and other threats/powers around Asia/Europe.

Bacterial warfare is a possibility.?

Of course it is possible and we are seeing how quickly our brittle societies are destabilising

it could be many possibilities, at this stage

But one thing is for sure. The Chinese Government is on notice

They knew about this a long time ago and tried initially to ignore it

Don't worry guys, the PM has got this handled. He's told the virus to take a break until Monday so he can go to the NRL.

He really know's what he's doing. FFS.

What makes you think it's not? Let's put it this way, it's likely to be as much a natural occurrence as was SARS.

If we are going to go down the conspiracy path, then who's to say it's not the work of a doomsday cult such as the one in S. Korea where the infections went through the roof.  Apparently a number of their members returned to S Korea from Hubei Province in January at about the time the rest of the world became aware of the virus' existence.

And yeah, those other big threats such as Italy.

Mmmmm, true that, my 4 yo loves board games.... methinks I'll have to get on his program if it all comes to fruition.

media aren't getting their reporting correct; all going with 'cancellation' when the actual recommendation is 'advising against'

"Based on the advice we have received today about the increasing number of cases on the evidence of community transition, it has been recommended to us that we moved to a position by Monday where we will be advising against organised non-essential gatherings of persons of 500 people or greater — from Monday."

Potentially, it can help stop the spread in the countryside, but as the population density in the cities is similar to other countries, the spread is likely to occur at the same rate within the city centres. It's already in the cities, so there is no chance of stopping the spread Australia wide.

Hmm I appreciate your answer and in theory makes sense, but these Asian country big cities have twice the population of Melbourne.

I don't think its not, 'ht'.    I wonder what the truth is.

And in these times of world upheaval, I would like to think people also are thinking of all possibilities.  And not just simply the easiest notion, of natural selection.

I think the numbers in Nth Korea and Russia might show a picture,  IF they are way down on the rest of world numbers.

Good grief, idiotic conspiracy theories are ruining Demonland (as well as the reputation of those posting them IMO).   Can we stick to discussing the effect on footy.

That's it.  Anything is possibly, until we know something more.

I'm suggesting we should entertain all ideas in the back of of minds.

Conspiracy theories would suggest a blaming attitude,  or a fearful attitude.  I feel neither of these, but have an enquiring mind to all reasons.  I don't have a habit of sitting on my hands and my mind.  I let it fly,  and discard ideas I don t believe,  'might be'.

Mine was obviously tongue in cheek... I think it was the work of the NRL in an effort to win back their dwindling supporter base (I see that their games are going ahead) ?

Postpone the season at least 6 weeks

Player welfare must be paramount as well as spectators

Yeah, sorry didn't mean to include you.   Now here's another 'open-minded'  possibility - the Martians are preparing to invade Earth.

My guess is the AFL will play without crowds until the first player goes down.   Delaying the start of the season has the difficulty of guessing how long to delay it for.   It could end up the entire year.  So I'd expect the AFL to lean heavily on clubs to isolate their players & coaches etc and cross their fingers that we can get through as much of the season as possible.  And then probably cancel the rest of the season - no premiers this year.

There was chatter in some media that the virus 'escaped' from a bio-tech lab near the Wuhan wet market which has been blamed for starting the spread of the virus.  Apparently, several of the people first diagnosed had not been near the market.  One of them was a lab technician from the bio-tech facility.

Make of that what you will.

There is only one solution, and that was given by Sue above....

No spectators for the forseeable future.

Players have as much chance of catching it down the street as from each other, so stopping games is completely pointless from a perspective of transmission.

The other consideration is that the TV obligations have to be met......solution: play the games. ( It also keeps the fans happier)

There is NO point delaying the season.  This virus will get worse in Australia when winter comes, just like it has in the Northern Hemisphere.  And as Sue has said, no-one knows how long it will go on for ( probably until sufficient immunity has built up in the community, just like every previous epidemic..)

Sounds like the kind of propaganda which was once reserved for the Dreaded Communists. Unfortunately there are many here among us who believe everything we're told. What irks me is when this surrender to propaganda results in racial smears and the kind of idiotic posts I referred to above. The human species is prone to this need to have a scapegoat, someone to blame, someone called 'the other'.

Dieter, your odious intimidation efforts are not helping anyone.  I've put forward a pretty straightforward set of copiously verified facts with clear cause and effect relationships.

- that the dismal animal welfare and workplace safety cultures and laws of many countries, but most particularly the globally integrated ones headlined by China, is a major factor in this, previous, and likely future novel contagions.

- that the cover-up first response culture of many authoritarian countries, but most particularly the globally integrated ones headlined by China, is a major factor in virus' being enabled to spread beyond an initial outbreak.

Failure to deal with the reality of the situation actually provides racists with a cloak to cover their vileness - based on your response any given racist can now say 'Look, the PC police won't even let us talk about the failings of a repressive totalitarian state.'

I speak from a position of resentment on this because I have watched as this knee-jerk 'it's racist' reaction has provided a similar cloak to awful reactionaries across the world who have successfully branded things like human rights, free press, women's liberation, and so on as 'western/white conspiracies' sent to undermine the 'unity' of the 'natural order'.  From Turkey to Indonesia to Sri Lanka, there's hardly a repressive government that hasn't claimed that, say, Amnesty International is actually just a front for white cultural imperialism.

Dieter, your thoughtless aggression harms people I care about.  Please take some time to reflect on the conspiracy theorist tones of your post I have quoted and whether that is really how you want to relate to the world.

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
