Just play the matches as per the existing fixture with the only persons allowed into the ground being 150 Cheer Squad members from each participating Club (pre-tested for the virus). Everybody will miss out on blockbuster game revenue but the AFL itself retains the broadcasting right revenues and at least the stadiums won’t be deadly silent.

Of course it is possible and we are seeing how quickly our brittle societies are destabilising

If we are going to go down the conspiracy path, then who's to say it's not the work of a doomsday cult such as the one in S. Korea where the infections went through the roof.  Apparently a number of their members returned to S Korea from Hubei Province in January at about the time the rest of the world became aware of the virus' existence.

 

And yeah, those other big threats such as Italy.

And in these times of world upheaval, I would like to think people also are thinking of all possibilities.  And not just simply the easiest notion, of natural selection.

 

I think the numbers in Nth Korea and Russia might show a picture,  IF they are way down on the rest of world numbers.

I'm suggesting we should entertain all ideas in the back of of minds.

 

Conspiracy theories would suggest a blaming attitude,  or a fearful attitude.  I feel neither of these, but have an enquiring mind to all reasons.  I don't have a habit of sitting on my hands and my mind.  I let it fly,  and discard ideas I don t believe,  'might be'.

Yeah, sorry didn't mean to include you.   Now here's another 'open-minded'  possibility - the Martians are preparing to invade Earth.

My guess is the AFL will play without crowds until the first player goes down.   Delaying the start of the season has the difficulty of guessing how long to delay it for.   It could end up the entire year.  So I'd expect the AFL to lean heavily on clubs to isolate their players & coaches etc and cross their fingers that we can get through as much of the season as possible.  And then probably cancel the rest of the season - no premiers this year.

There was chatter in some media that the virus 'escaped' from a bio-tech lab near the Wuhan wet market which has been blamed for starting the spread of the virus.  Apparently, several of the people first diagnosed had not been near the market.  One of them was a lab technician from the bio-tech facility.

Make of that what you will.

There is only one solution, and that was given by Sue above....

No spectators for the forseeable future. 

Players have as much chance of catching it down the street as from each other, so stopping games is completely pointless from a perspective of transmission. 

The other consideration is that the TV obligations have to be met......solution: play the games. ( It also keeps the fans happier)

There is NO point delaying the season.  This virus will get worse in Australia when winter comes, just like it has in the Northern Hemisphere.  And as Sue has said, no-one knows how long it will go on for ( probably until sufficient immunity has built up in the community, just like every previous epidemic..)
