A quick video I've clipped together of our former skipper bagging ten against Footscray back in 1994.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the most recent instance of a Demon kicking ten in a match? I think the closest since is the Wizard's nine goal second half performance against Collingwood back in 2000.

What an outstanding player he was! Hard to believe he still isn't a Hall of Fame member after retiring 20 years ago! Probably the best all round Demon player since Flower.

Closest since is Neita’s 9 vs Richmond in (I think) 2004

Was there that day, huge win.

Strangely enough, I think Garry might have been the second best on ground that day...

That's right.  Lyon only played three quarters.  Balme took him off with a tight hammy; Schwarta stayed on and got injured near the end of the game.  Both played the next week in Perth to no avail.  Was an exciting finals series that one! The first win against Carlton was an exceptional performance.

Yep, knocked his head on the ground after taking yet another speccy late in the game.  "Nureyev!" exclaimed an enthralled Sandy Roberts in response to Schwarz's acrobatics that day.

When asked after the game why he hadn't taken Schwarz off as a precaution, coach Neil Balme said "I just like watching him play".

So did we, Neil.  Alas, we lost the following week to West Coast, Schwarta was relatively quiet and it was the following pre-season when he did his knee for the first time and he was never the same player again.

Maybe not as aerobic, but after being told to put more weight on to help stabilise the knee, he became a very good CHF for us. We haven't had a better one since Ox (i count Neita as a FF)

We had the side to win it that year it’s a shame we had to play the eagles in the heat over there, I always wonder what if Schwarz and jakovich stayed injury free we really could have pinched a flag imo

They were flat as pancakes for the 1994 prelim. Went over on Wednesday and only had one proper training session between landing and game day. Meant they were sluggish and lethargic (against a very good side, let it be said). 
Some of the players were at such a loose end over what to do they went to the movies for the whole day (back to back to back)!

Jeez we had some handy players in that side

10 goals in a final...  and it hasnt happened since.     Thats how phenomenal of a performance it was.

Lyon  was such a great player.  If he moved to full forward earlier in his career hed have 700+ goals.   Same with Neitz.

G Lyon was a mighty good forward, just below the absolute heavyweights. But a magnificent accurate kick

His goal at Waverley in the  ‘88 Prelim went about 90 metres Post High

Garry Lyon remains the best Melbourne player I have seen in my 30+ years of watching football. It is a travesty that he is not in the Hall of Fame given that every man and his dog gets in these days. He was someone who did the simple things uncommonly well over and over again.

 

I'm puzzled by the strange game plan - players lowering their eyes and kicking to a leading forward who goals. Weird.

A beautiful kick, and a versatile player. All Australia forward, All Australian defender and played in the middle against Essendon one day and turned the game.

He should be in the HoF i have no doubt, he Captained his team, BnF winner, long time state rep and Captain, Coached Australia amongst other things he has done in the footy community. If players like:

Chris Grant, Barry Hall &  Warren Tredrea (all fine players) are in, i would argue that Lyon is the equal of any of them.

When was Garry Lyon named an AA defender?  You might be thinking of Neita there.

Would argue Garry Lyon was more versatile than Chris Grant, (both on field and off!)  a much better sportsman than Barry Hall (but perhaps of equal notoriety) and much less concerned with on field histrionics than Warren Tredrea (although he has a higher media profile).

 

Wasn't Chris Grant 'cleaned up' by David Neitz  during the match? Fairly of course!

Lyon is streets ahead of Barry Hall in my opinion. I don’t remember Hall ever firing in a final? He blew up against us in 98 and had a few poor ones with the Swans as I remember it.

All good mate,  its a weird one, these teams often get overlooked when talking about All Australia reps, essentially the same thing. Anyway to make a team as a CHB for 2 years  in a row, then 3 years as a HFF shows what a player he was.
