$3M funding to upgrade Gosch's Paddock to "AFL size" (presumably that's MCG equivalent)?

$2M from MOPT, $500k from the AFL and MFC.

"The oval will be resurfaced and enlarged to MCG sized length and Marvel Stadium sized width."

I suspect it is just a coincidence. These negotiations would have taken many, many months, if not years.

What I suspect is not a coincidence, though, is that the State Government has come to the party after we've publicly stated we're getting out of the pokies industry. I imagine any State Government approval was contingent on that decision.

Why would the govt care whether we're in pokies or not? The machines still exist, the govt still gets their tax money from their operation. Why would they care who runs them? Is it so they can feed more pokies machines into the hands of their donors?

So MCG is 160m Long and 141m wide
Docklands is 159.5m by 128.5 m

Someone get the Strava out and let us know what the current oval is

So presumably we're kicking in somewhere between $250k-400k. That's a good result for a redevelopment and leaves us cash rich to backstop the 2020-2021 financial hits to revenue.

Sad and true. Why would the government care about about the terrible social issues these machines create when they make everyone so much money?

Is that all? In the meantime, Geelong get $40m from the Government and Bulldogs get $36m. What a joke.

We will get the benefit of AAMI getting expanded for the Women's World Cup in 2023.

Google Earth says Gosch's is 155m long and 110m wide

Edit - for width comparison, GMHBA is 115m

Thought the only thing happening in VIC was the 'Home of the Matildas'/FV upgrade at La Trobe Uni?

Seems a horrendous waste of money to upgrade AAMI for a couple of games on women's soccer that easily could be played at Marvel or the MCG, but if we get a cut of it then sounds ok.

My main concern would be making sure our facilities are (somewhat) standalone and controlled by the club. And potentially finding a way to run side businesses out of them to generate revenue.

Bigger oval is nice. MCG size would've been optimal, maybe someone can sneak down and add a few metres when they stake it out.

thanks, good work, but is that boundary line to boundary line or fence to fence?

155m long and 110m wide is boundary to boundary

Fence to fence Gosch's is 165m long and 120m wide

This is just for the oval at this stage, wait and see what happens when we get to the actual home base stage.

Without knowing anything but having heard both bartlett and roffey speak,  l am guessing the former was holding out for a better home base than what looks to have been offered as part of the women's world cup development

I’m pretty sure I remembered hearing that the “home base” would be a collective of two announcements where the first will be focused on the oval itself while the last details are being ironed out for our new home facility which will be right next to it.

Either way this is good news.

Women's World Cup takes place right in the middle of the AFL season.

AFL said No to MCG or Marvel having any games.

When I see how clubs like Geelong and Footscray manage to get second and third bites at Gov't funding for upgraded facilities they already have (paid for by Gov't), it seems the important thing is to get the facility by whatever means, then work away at the gov't, like ants nibbling at a carcass, to get a second round of upgrades (for the community! not for us, oh no!), then rinse & repeat.

"Minister, how can we get more girls & disabled genderqueer refugees playing sport without a small elevated viewing area -- some might call it a grandstand -- at Gosch's? Oh, and while you're at it, a function room and merchandise shop would be good too."

Apologies, missed that post.

Have strong doubts they'll do anything substantial at AAMI prior to the WWC but don't know what the internal facilities are like/that may need an upgrade.

That's a failure of the AFL/State Governments/FIFA/Football Aus to negotiate better outcomes, particularly with nonsense around stadium shutdowns/signage etc.

Those kind of decisions should be re-evaluated now it's Covid times and everyone has had to cooperate better.

I guess it could be handy for the occasional big final or concert but it's also going to hurt the atmosphere at home and away storm/victory/other games played there too. The stadium is a success because it's so appropriate for the teams.

Anyway, hopefully it works for us and I guess it won't be the dodgiest economic stimulus going around.

Have you ever been to a Soccer game at Docklands?  The paying patrons sit so far away from the action, it kills the atmosphere (Not that the ground has the greatest atmosphere anyhow). Oval grounds aren't great for Soccer matches (in my opinion). However watching Soccer at the Bubble is fantastic, you sit right on top of the action

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
