Kate Roffey did an interview on SEN this morning and the last question she was asked was about the progress of a new training facility, her response was something about the challenge is trying to find a patch of grass in the city area. It sounded to me we were back at square one.

Lol...

Clubs are getting million dollar upgrades on their already home base facilities and we can't even find a patch of grass to put the stump in.

I’m genuinely at a point where I’m thinking we have no option BUT to look elsewhere from the city. We have been at this point of looking for somewhere to be near the MCG since I first started following Melbourne in the bloody 90s!

We missed the boat on options that came our way, the likelihood of them coming along again is low, let’s look elsewhere. Still try to keep it near to the city (at least with a view of the city) but we are trying to find the perfect option and it might simply not happen.

Becoming apparent to all of us. Whatever you think of Gutnick, missing on Olympic park was the miss of a lifetime.

I'm sure it's been bought up before, but Richmond station badley needs to be bought into the 21st century.  Build a new station with better MCG access and a new training and social facility for the MFC above the railway lines like Fed Square.  Throw in a few apartment blocks if you like and the pollies can go to town on creating more open public space, houses for people and most importantly a proper home for the MFC.

You can't be serious. Gutnick was ousted in 2001 and up until then Olympic Park was in the hands of Athletics Victoria/Australia until Brumby, McGuire and Fildes did secret deals to obtain it for Collingwood in 2008.

Gutnick, ignoring all his failings, deserves a life membership for helping Melbourne survive during the wretched merger period

I don’t know if it’s possible but will the feasibility report of possible locations be released? Wasn’t it a multi-million dollar bit of funding to provide us this opportunity at establishing where the base could exist near to the MCG?

One area that I can think of where there might be land that could be converted and be utilised for community benefits is around Port Melbourne where there could be some industrial land that we could also make into a hub for our womens team as well as a training facility.

Yeah from memory that was during Gabriel Szondy’s time as president, and unfortunately our finances at the time were so dire there wouldn’t have been 2 cents to rub together to put in a bid (though that’s where government/AFL funding would have been nice to assist us).

I have made that comment before but when the captain of your GF winning team makes a comment about the lack of facilities I have changed my mind.
Just stop with this near the G idea,  It is the desired position by our older members and a board who has welded themselves to the idea. Have the members ever been asked their opinion?  Of course the answer is no. As I said two days ago we now have a labor government for the next four years who see no votes in the MFC and in fact a loss of votes if they allocate green space in inner Melbourne to a conservative football club. If we want something to start this decade we have to change this near the G  requirement. It is like a giant anchor that stops any other idea or thought. Near the G or bust will see us bust.

Is it? I didn't vote Liberal in the election. My in-laws (Dees supporters) didn't either. Middle and upper class just as likely to vote labor or Greens nowadays.

I agree with this. We've wasted enough time as it is. Find a location in the inner suburbs and just get on with it

Matt, I just had a listen to the interview with Kate and I certainly didn’t get the “we are back at square one” impression. My impression was Kate was saying that now the election is done and dusted, we will be able to get things rolling again with the Govt.
Maybe I’m more optimist than pessimist but I believe that we will get what we want (eventually), where we want it (MCG remodelling) and that funding from the Government will not be an issue. And I’ll continue to hold onto that belief until proven otherwise.

Has any thought ever been given to Elsternwick Park (where Elwood, Brighton and Elsternwick intersect)? On Brighton Rd/Nepean Highway (good road transport), near 67 tram (Carnegie to Melb Uni tram) and Elsternwick train station (good public transport links), spacious location (can easily have two ovals) and close to MFC's traditional supporter base in the inner Sth & inner Sth East ...

It was looked at by the club and then nothing more was heard about it.

listened to the roffey interview and didn't infer any 'back to square one' from it either

next year is, according to our five year plan, when we need to see some movement on the 'home base near the g' come to fruition as well as hit 70k members and average mcg attendance of 50k

i think the latter two are more a stretch goal than a home precinct

BDA the actual position doesn't matter it is the perception, the average person see the MFC as a bunch of silver tails

NC we have been holding onto that idea for the last 6 years and what do we have at this point? As the song goes wishing and hoping!

For Kate to appear in the media we must have won something again ... its all about you Kate,

“I think I slept seven years’ worth of relief last night,” Roffey joked on SEN Breakfast.

“I’ve been working closely with them for seven year"

This is after taking credit for the support she gave goody after the AFL GF the year before

It is now time to accept that we won't be getting a ground close by the MCG despite the emotional pull.

A council is not going to give us a locally-used ground or open space.  The govt is not going to lean on them.

Melbourne Airport might give us a long term lease on some land.  We could head out to Cranbourne or Wollert.  But then we might as well extend the Casey oval 15m on the North and East and stay there.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
