I'm not sure if you were being serious, but I would be very disappointed if it lost the name of "Gosch's Paddock". There's something noble about preserving the history of the site for the league's oldest club. On the other hand, I'd love there to be a few rows of seating along one side which could be named "The Flower Stand".

And let's place a large ceramic urn on the wing boundary. Name it The Flower Pot.

It all sounds very promising. Maybe we can make some extra money by offering up the naming rights. Grolsch's Paddock? With the Cherry Tree just a five minute walk away in Cremorne I'm not fussed about whether there's a social club included.

As for the extension of AAMI Park I'm glad to hear it. We need it to host big international matches. Nothing looks more amateurish than plonking a football pitch in the middle of a huge footy oval.

They’re moving a fence and we’ve got people on here saying Pert and Roffey are heroes, let’s get some perspective. It’s good news to get some investment regardless of the level but let’s not make this out to be any more than it is.

Yeah, they’re putting in $3 million, that’ll cover the mowing if we’re lucky

To be fair I don’t blame some posters for being sceptical. It’s not like there haven’t been false dawns and botched announcements in the past.

It’s more than that. Pert is pissing on our leg, telling us it’s raining, and people are falling over themselves to celebrate getting a weather report.

I'm intrigued by your news channel mate. From memory, you were also anti Bartlett towards the end. What's the goss?

I don't follow this as closely as most on here.  If the admin and footy dep are under the one roof then that is a great thing and as others have acknowledged, getting anything together in current times is a big win.

But I can't help but be a bit disappointed to hear about the ground size.  Maybe it's not as important as i think, but is it really a coincidence that our MCG record improves when we can train all summer on a full size oval?  When today's game is so much about structures and team defence, training on a ground that is not similar to our home ground will hurt us moving forward.  We make do with what we've got... but if we are upgrading things, why not get the oval size right? (maybe there's not enough space)

I assume there isn’t enough space once they construct facilities for us, When I read the release the was it was worded was this is phase one, phase two is facilities which may not be announced to we (victoria) are in a better spot with COVID etc.

State gov phase two wont be announced until mid next year.[my opinion]  State election November next year, so hold it till then to announce it . Bribe the people and hope they forget the 801 deaths.

We’ve achieved nothing. We’re being given a pittance to shift some fences, and to fob us off with vague promises of things to come but no real commitment.

Pert is spinning this as some sort of an achievement.

Is this really the best we could hope for? An achievement worth celebrating? Underwhelming doesn’t do it justice. It’s pitiful.

Furthermore, the lack of media reporting on this “development” is indicative of the fact there really is nothing to report.

i agree - why dont we get some of our beloved supporters in the media, to do a real story on how the oldest football club and founder of our game are having to train in what is akin to someone's backyard, whilst the Saints have been given millions in funding to move not once but twice in the last 2 decades; the Cats have gotten millions upon millions to upgrade facilities where you can look into the changing rooms, Doggies and Tigers... list goes on and on. it is incomprehensibly unfair.

What irks me is that there are plenty of Melbourne supporters in the Melbourne corporate world and yet nobody is able to put aside their differences and lobby together to make us great once more. This is why winning a flag is much more than the immediate on field success, but will make us relevant again on and off field.

I agree it is really f all compaired to the cash being dished out to other clubs, i hope their is alot more funding and we get exactly what we want.

We've wait the longest out of any club for facilities, we are completely overdue.

It was on mentioned on channel 10 last night.

I think the training ground upgrade is important news for a number of reasons:

  1. A full size is required for effective drills and zones
  2. Re-surfacing should help remove the injury risk that the current compressed surface presents - I heard from a very good source that this was the direct cause of injuries to players last year
  3. I think that training mostly at Casey is a long-term negative for attracting and retaining players because it's too far away.  I think it's fine to be part of the program but not the core of the program
  4. The location reinforces the concept that we'll ultimately be in the MCG precinct

Yes true, but the ground should have been reconfigured years ago OD.

Let's hope their is more to come as we are way overdue in this department.

Hate to be a smartarse but how did we cop so many injuries to players due a ground we didn’t train on last year seeing as we were in the hubs the whole time? Or do you mean 2019?

Because its peanuts mate. if it is a sign of more things to come then ok but until then, we can not celebrate mediocrity - its contagious and this is exactly what it is...mediocre.

Not really sure why there’s a lot of whinging in this thread. They’ve clearly stated/implied that this is the first part of a long-term home base solution near AAMI.

Copied straight from the article:

“As we look to establish our new long-term training base, the number one priority in speaking to coaches and players was access to a training oval that reflects the dimensions of the MCG as closely as possible,” said Pert.

So let’s not act like they’ve changed plans and all of a sudden they’re not building a home base after all. This is just the first part and more announcements will likely be made further down the track. Calm yourselves.

What we don't know is how much behind we are because of (1) our own incompetence at lobbying successive Governments and (2) because of the insistence of staying within spitting distance of the MCG which thereby reduces options.

Too far away from what? . An empty CBD or is it close to the mass migration to the outer burbs/ county regions that he Mornington peninsula is part of. Doesn't hurt Geelong to be based close to a surf coast / semi rural region.  Casey being too far away I think is overplayed. Otherwise I agree with your other points especially 4 locking in AMMI as the site.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
