No it does not. Gambling is causing widespread harm, dig into the suicide rates and gambling shows up at every turn. I’m very happy the club has said no as you should be.

Exactly, the machines weren't deactivated when we sold them. The profits just went elsewhere and we again put ourselves in a perilous financial position/at the mercy of the AFL.

No doubt it does, but that's over-simplifying things. Does it show up as a cause, or as a symptom of the real issue?

What are the odds Tassie finishes building their stadium (once it eventually gets the nod) before we end up getting into a genuine home base (Caulfield or other lol)

No. It's effectively foolhardy to pretend.

What really happened. Did the machines stop ??

I'm fully aware of what gambling is.

You make a bet... not my problem... it's yours. Own it.

Should we stop selling drinks ??

Hell, stop selling chips and pies.... save a lard [censored] or two.

Ppl, society, needs to stop pretending it's always someone else's fault.

If anything is a problem, of course seek help.

I’d say there’s a range of illness and issues underlying it but read some of the accounts of problem gamblers and their interactions with gambling companies. It’s quite unbelievable what they do to keep you spending money. Countless stories of people losing their homes and then being offered 30,40K and more into their accounts as the companies know they’ll lose that and more.

Do some research into the harm gambling causes annd how the companies deal with problem gamblers and tell me they should be advertise everywhere and to our kids.

Your missing the point.

I'm not debating the good bad or otherwise of pokies.

I'm suggesting it matters not whether we have them or another. The problem truthfully is the player. And they always find a machine.

We haven't solved anything, if that's the litmus, by moving them.

The club makes a statement that it doesn’t believe in further advertising a company with extremely dubious methods of getting business. Sure it likely won’t turn the dial very much but it starts the conversation and now very few clubs lean on gambling directly. It’s now time the AFL got on board. Problem is those in the big house are amateurs with little no social conscience who love the long lunches gambling provides.

The future fund is an excellent concept but it needs to grow in a capital sense (excluding re-invested income) by at least one million per year.

I think it's still under $10M. Twenty million is required if it's to have a future impact

The gambling companies are running the AFL Pokies are the least of our current problems

Absolutely. The AFL are complete hypocrites. They don’t like Clubs having Pokie Revenue, but they will shove Betting on everything down your throat as part of the ā€œGameday Experienceā€

Absolute Hypocrites

Just now, whatwhat say what said:

Head office has bought Waverley from the hawks - close to $10m than $20m according to Jake Niall in the ninefax papers

Still, not a bad little earner for Dingley

Geez it's not going to look great if Caufield falls through and Waverley was just sitting there for 1/10th the price.

1/10th the price and utterly useless for a club with afl, aflw, vfl, and vflw teams to manage

Exactly why hawks have worked for the last 15 years to get out of the joint

Have the AFL ever actually taken a position on Pokies? Getting out of Pokies seems to be a largely club lead initiative.

Yes to all of the above. Same for me and @old dee ...we have been seeing it for 50 years!.

Brian Dixon at the merger meetings said something along the lines of " we don't want to merge. We don't want second rate facilities like at Glenferrie. We want the best facilities"....how ironic today.

Yes George and sadly with no result.

Careful the mention of odds or betting might trigger some people

True, but at least there is something there. We are looking for money to build something from the ground up... surely it would have been good to have some foundations in place... and cheaper to improve upon?

The article on the AFL website mentions conducting AFL umpire programs at Waverley.

I was hoping that would be a factor in getting Caulfield over the line for us.

Back in AFL hands: League buys Waverley Park from Hawks

The historic venue has returned to the AFL's possession after a deal to purchase the Hawks' training base

Not really

It can’t be improved upon; it’s the equivalent of Gosch’s in that it’s a small, open and public green space

Elsternwick Park is used for umpires to train. It is owned by VCA (I understand, could be wrong). It regularly held >20,000 people at Rockdogs matches. It is under utilised and has its stands rebuilt. Bayside is is re-allocating parks and ovals in this area at the moment.

It is possibly too late to try but is close to the train and Nepean Hwy and you can park around the ground. It is a large ground as well.

Also it is enclosed and easy to close the gate.

EDIT: It is actually part of Baysides Parks. If you look at Baysides boundaries it is in starvation corner. By going with the latest scandals and dodgy practices that have afflicted this council and the fact that none of the Councillors have ever lived close to this mainly Elwood area, I reckon if we had an Eddie type president, we would be right in the mix.Ā

If Elstenwick Park Oval 1 is now free from VFA Duties, since according to reports, Waverley Park is to take over the Umpires training and associated duties, then it in my mind becomes available for discussion as a home base for us.

I did give up arguing against the usual Naysayers years ago but it now really needs consideration.

The oval is large and there is a second oval on St Kilda St that I admit has many games on it, but booking it for 9-4pm it seems largely free .

But the main oval is just not used much. It can be locked, is close to all forms of transport but has claims from Match of the Day VFA, some cricket and the Umpires. If Punt Rd is big enough then Elsternwick Park is bigger, wider and close.

Ā

The Age article also has the following comment...

It has also been suggested the facility could be a short-term stopgap any time an AFL club is temporarily without a home, such as Melbourne, who are hoping to establish a base at Caulfield Racecourse.

Almost makes you cry that the club has become like a wandering samurai in search of a new lord's castle that we can call home.

who says "punt road is big enough". It patently isn't

when we leave the ferals and the filth will have a gigantic tussle over gosch's as a second oval

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
