Is this actually longer than this time last year?!??

The injuries may not be as bad as last year but [censored] we are back to our seasonal norm of 15 or 16. Can we just get a break from this stuff ever? It does make a difference over a season. Richmond has a couple of flags achieved in seasons when they had no more than 2 injuries at any time for a whole season! Imagine that. The Hawks were similar thru much of their three flags and Geelong before that. You need some luck with injuries but it alludes us year on year.

The critical thing is most of the injured players got a sold block of training in before XMAS and have s old fitness base down.

Also most of that list is still running so keeping their fitness levels up.

Binman, I agree with you. The pre-Christmas hard, consistent training was something that we lacked during the last pre-season. We are in a much better position than this time last year.

Of the players nominally on the injured list, from media reports and our own training reporters, I am of the opinion that the following will be fit and available for Round 1.

               Max Gawn

               Michael Hibberd

               Stephen May

Jake Melksham

The following I believe are possible for Round 1 but not as definite as to above.

Angus Brayshaw – Elbow… a difficult one to know the timeline for recovery as it is an unusual injury.

Mitch Hannan – from the sounds of things, he is likely to be back with the main group very soon. Round 1 availability will depend on match fitness.

Kade Chandler – Wrist.. Round 1 availability will depend on Match fitness/ preseason gametime.

Joel Smith - ? not up to date on this injury. From reports he has trained well so far this preseason.

Aaron vandeBerg – foot? I believe that this is not a serious injury and that he will be back to training in the near future.

Harrison Petty - ? No idea

The rest will not have a hope of making Round 1.

I am a glass half full kind a guy.

I have always said that luck is the intangible ingredient that almost every premiership team has had over the journey, and it's something that we have never had happen to us when we've been in with a shot.

I really hope that when theses guys get back out on the park their fitness base they have created over the summer will stand them in good stead.

Of that list though only preuss is confirmed being out for any length of time and all of them have got a very strong fitness base down.

So not that a big an issue really.

There was a report somewhere that his arm guard has been removed and he might ramp things up next week.

Hopefully he'll be ready for Marsh 2 V's Hawthorn along with Gawn and May.

I took Hibberd, Melksham and Spargo off the list after the training report and added Corey Wagner (Iced Knee) and Tom McDonald (rolled ankle - hopefully minor).

You can add Gary Pert to the list with a shoulder. The CEO needs to be smarter and not engage in such reckless activity that could derail our season. He is old enough to know better and is the captain of the ship FFS.

I think that we are in a pretty good spot re-injuries.

We appear to be pushing the boys very hard on the track, but being ultra-conservative (and slow to re-introduce them) if they have injuries or niggles. Of the current injury list, only Preuss is clearly out for part of the season (aside from tyhose injured prior to the pre-season in KK, Bennell and Neitschke.

My guess all (the TBA) will be back in full training over the next couple of weeks to a month, and if we were in the season proper some of the "injured" players would be working through it to play next week...

Big Demons forward joins All Australian ruckman in rehab group

Marc McGowan provides the latest update on Melbourne's pre-season injuries ...

IMPORTANT forward Tom McDonald is the latest big-name Demon to join the club's rehab group.

McDonald sported strapping around his left knee and trained away from the main group, alongside All-Australian ruckman Max Gawn, Mitch Hannan, Kade Chandler and Corey Wagner.

It's the same knee he suffered a season-ending meniscus tear on last year, although he shed the strapping as the session continued and he didn't appear overly limited.

Does anyone have any realistic estimates on those listed above as TBA ?

I doubt the person who made up the list does Bbo so NO.

It may be also that the pre-season is harder than they have ever done, and a few niggles have emerged.  This time leading into the giggles games is a perfect time to ease people back /modify programs to aid recovery, get players over niggles and set them up for the season proper.  We have being going hard at it, so if we have a few contact and soft tissue injuries and can ease players through, they will have done the hard kms and training, and can now do modified and maintenance work so they can be as near to cherry ripe as possible.  There are some concerns with that list, but not as many as the ‘total number’ suggests.  IF we can get through the piracy games without adding any to the lower end of this list, think I think we will be in a good spot for the season proper.

During the season we'll often have up to 5 guys who have played the previous week and will play the next week on modified or very light duties. Some who won't even make the injury report.

4 serious injuries and 11 guys not at their best is too many, but that 11 could quickly resolve down over the next few weeks.

Anyway, we seem to be mastering the train harder aspect, probably plenty of room to look at training smarter. Personally I think if we increase the skills at high intensity without contact earlier in summer we might get less injuries when more contact comes in. Without a great skill level our contact match sim drills are going to end up in plenty of bodies crashing in.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
