what does first round mean? just first 18 picks, or first (original)18 plus f/s, academy picks ?

After the premiers, Richmond has had its first pick.

think i know what you mean (the 2nd of my choices)..... of course the ferals could pick-trade up and change the scenario you give

I shall rephrase - first round ends when the holder of Richmond's first round pick drafts a player.

so around 20-22 picks. the original 1-18 picks plus any intervening f/s, academy picks which don't use a first round pick

I really like the Adam Goodes comparison that @DeeZee made today in this thread.  If we take Jackson we think Goodes is the type of player he might become.  Better role comparison than Grundy or Buddy.

Buckenara rates him at 18 in his phantom draft.

Seems to have gamble written all over it. Drafting for unexposed potential. Hopefully will develop into a forward, hopefully will learn to kick, hopefully will grow a few centimetres, hopefully won't go home. Hope they've done serious homework on the last point.

Having watched the finals I would have said the standout trait we need is elite skill. Clearly not addressing that weakness here.

Gotta trust Taylor I guess.

Buckenara has Pickett at 35. Fair to say our picks would be looking very different if he was our recruiting boss.

Buckenara knows his stuff "Implicitly"

I can see us totally stuffing this up A La Typical MFC!

A ruck who cannot kick ?? at Pick 3 Nup!

Everyone congregating in here like it's the Draft Day Match thread, rather than a speculative player thread. I guess today will forthwith be known as Luke Jackson Day as it commemorates the moment everything changed and demonland was never the same. Fans split into different camps, bickering over the pick for the next decade

Too costly rjay.  Another year to run.  Club's already taken a big hit.  Looks like the club is starting to have a few concerns also.  Earlier they said we are backing in T-Mac and Weid to go around again in 2020 as our two talls but are now chasing a ruckman who they believe can play as a tall forward in the draft.

False logic.

With pick 3 you take the best available. Simples.

You don't get cute and try to fill holes or weaknesses.

If needs and best available coincide, great. That seemed to be the case for a while with young. And he might still prove to be the best of those available at 3.

But it would appear the club has decided jackson is the best available. So should pick him.

In many circles Green is the best available Bin but there's a few in the mix.  We will beg to differ....again.

A ruckman at pick 3. I still can’t believe it.

Lets hope he can develop into a fwd

Or maybe a very tall mid / ruck-rover / mid?

Thinking he might be a Giants player come tomorrow

and we will have another Green in the red and blue.

Green in red and blue could make a very colorful picture or a terrible color clash.

Trust he is better than the last Jacko we had!!

If you mean Whacko Mark Jacko that would be easy, but if you mean Allen Jako then as a forward option (until injured) then that would be a magnificent outcome.

For years Ive watched the NBA and seen 200cm+ point guards with incredible movement and athleticism and wondered when we will see an athlete like that in the AFL instead of our 200cm+ ruckman who are mostly slow and cumbersome. Buddy is the closest we have had. Jackson could have that potential???? We can all hope.

IF Jackson developed into a player of Buddy’s ability and excitement then we would be a big winner, and if in addition we could keep him  under wraps out of playing hours (and I certainly don’t mean putting him on ice) the sky is the limit.

2 hours ago, Roger Mellie said:

FMD They're going to drag out the first round for 2 1/2 hours?

That's scaling new heights in dull for the AFL.

Lucky we have two picks to break up all that excitement.

1 hour ago, DeeSpencer said:

5 minutes a pick for at least 21 picks, it has to run for 105 minutes. And I think it should. Add in 15 minutes of introductions and you get 2 hours. Plus a wrap at the end.

Unfortunately to make it great tv you need 3 things:

1. Excellent HD highlights package

2. Draft experts with knowledge and presentation skills. Ideally 2 of them to bounce off each other.

3. An interviewer with skills and kids with charisma and stories to tell.

Because, Hogan aside (with his unique situation), the last time we had someone leave Melbourne to go 'home' to WA was Jeff Farmer and Troy Longmuir ... nearly 20 years ago (2000 and 1999). The last player to go 'home' anywhere was Scott Thompson in 2004.

As a risk it's way over-played, particularly for players leaving Melbourne.

Over-played or not, it’s real.

Ask any of the clubs in the so-called non-football states, where player retention is and has been a huge issue. Look at the raft of concessions the AFL has given these clubs over the years to mitigate this risk, including granting GCS pick #2 this year so that two Vic-based best mates can stick together, support each other and stay at the club.

As for the Demons, yes, Thomson and Hogan are indeed two great examples of MFC ‘high-end talent’ wanting to leave the club and go home. And, for many Dees’ supporters, their cases alone provide enough of a cautionary tale - and they should.

Looking at the recruitment of our last 25 high draft picks (i.e. Round 1, priority and mini draft) over the past 20 years, Thomson and Hogan represent almost 30% (2 out of 7) of those taken from outside Victoria. All seven, and their outcomes, are listed below:

2000: S Thomson (SA) - went home, traded to Crows end of 2004

2002: D Bell (SA) - delisted end of 2010

2002: N Smith (SA) - delisted end of 2006

2007: C Morton (WA) - went home, traded to Eagles end of 2012

2009: J Trengove (SA) - delisted end of 2017 (picked up by Power as DFA)

2012: J Toumpas (SA) - went home, traded to Power end of 2015

2012: J Hogan (WA) - went home, traded to Dockers end of 2018

On the face of it, then, 5 of our 7 high draft picks from interstate since 2000 have ended up playing with a club in their home state.

Now, I won’t claim that Morton, Trengove and Toumpas are the greatest examples of the go-home factor at work, but the other two, yes. And those two (Thomson and Hogan) just happen to be the best of the lot.

MFC no doubt know all this (and more) and - it appears - are willing to take the risk with Jacko.

I also think that if he is a great player and then wants to go home...well, we then receive some benefit from a trade at a higher level anyway. These are the realities that the industry operates in, and we may as well cash in at any given point in time.

The assumption that GWS want Green so badly is the issue.  According to some reports they don't and will let us keep him.

If they do want him badly, GWS can swap pick 4 (after our bid) for another club's 2020 first round pick and a swag of later 2020 picks.  Several clubs have 2 first round and multiple later round picks in 2020 which they could use to swap for #4 and stay within AFL rules eg Brisbane and maybe North).

Or swap #4 for a club's 3rd/4th round picks this year and their 2020 first round pick.

So GWS use rubbish picks this year, go into deficit and get the extra first round player next year.  GWS may go into deficit but I read somewhere that swapped/traded in picks aren't used to make up a deficit; only natural picks.

So GWS won't be using #4 on Green no matter what we do.  The risk for us is we miss out on the player we really want.

The only difference if we bid is that Ash (or whoever) stays in the pool.

BTW, Sydney yesterday said they won't bid on Green at 5 and some phantom draft watchers see him sliding to our pick 10.

I reckon most clubs have moved on from 'forcing' GWS to pay a 'fair' price because they have - GWS gave up 3 first round picks to get 4: 12 and 18 to saints for 6 then it and their 2020 first round pick to the Crows for 4.

Other than who we take, where Green is called is one of the more interesting things in the draft.

Regradless of how they dice it they will still be losing a super valuable pick 4 and don't get to take another shot at the top 10 with it LH.

The ONLY difference!??  LH if we land Green or Jackson and then, by bidding on Green along the way, it assists us landing Ash/Weightman (or other preferred contender) from the first 10 or so (instead of them slipping to another club as a result of a GWS no.4 pick) i for one would consider that a very nice coup indeed.

I have no idea why Freo didn't come to us with picks 7 & 8 for 3 & 28...

Yes we win the trade in terms of points equivalent to pick 50 however they get the keep their man in WA & build a replacement for Sandliands.

We could then pick up three of.... Serong, Young, Kemp, Pickett, Ash, Flanders, Weightmen or Stephens.

Apparently they can't as pick 8 was ours....

    BLOODY BLUES by Meggs

The conclusion to Narrm’s home and away season was the inevitable let down by the bloody Blues  who meekly capitulated to the Bombers.   The 2024 season fixture handicapped the Demons chances from the get-go with Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon advantaged with enough gimme games to ensure a tough road to the finals, especially after a slew of early season injuries to star players cost wins and percentage.     As we strode confidently through the gates of Prin
