Heard him on mmm about a month ago, he said the team/teams who get a froward coach and teach their kids how to kick will improve much better then teams who listen to these sports scientist.

With respect to kicking I liked what Damian Hardwick had to say this morning on coaching. IMO opinion there are 2 game styles, Hawthorn with their precise hit the target movement of the ball that won them 3 straight flags and Richmond who will chip to a loose target but prefer the chaos game of run and gun or kicking to their forward marking targets.

Hardwick's point was that in 2016 he was trying to coach his footballers to improve their weaknesses i.e play the Hawthorn precision game. In 2017 after a review and close call to getting sacked he decided to coach to their strengths which was run and gun. He also said he coached less and didn't micro manage the team and let them play (I suspect this means he didn't need the runner but the team leaders looked after on field adjustments). Similar sentiments from Grundy in an interview last week. He said  Buckley's attitude was work harder to achieve success which drove the players nuts and if it persisted Grundy wanted to leave. Buckley got reviewed, came close to a sacking but changed his attitude. Less is sometimes more and play to your strengths.

Set shot kicking is a skill and I hope the new coach can improve this but also moving the ball into better position for set shots is important to and that is game style. I have my doubts that some players will ever be good great field kicks but if you cannot hit a target then kick it to space and let them run on to it

Interesting, I get the difference in ball movement but not sure this is the right approach to set shots (although it might explain the around the corner kicks from dead in front).  If you look at rugby the all time great goal kicker Johnny Wilkinson just practiced with a set routine and to my eye it seems that is the best approach.

Also forgot to mention that Hardwick besides encouraging chaos ball (which we do) could not emphasise enough the importance of defence. I know they lost Rance early but settled in a very stable defence. If there is 1 thing that gives me hope for coming seasons is if we can settle our defence as the injury plague this year really crueller any continuity with our back 6. I am not sure moving forward who the back 6 will be but the formula is a lock down full back (Astbury) the intercept mark (Grimes) the designated kicker and general (Houli) the run and gun (Short) and midfielders who are prepared to run both ways.

I am so impressed with how Hardwick has re-invented himself and his thoughts on the game.

Back when he was on the market and we were looking at a new coach I would have taken Hardwick mainly due to the way he was as a player as well as ruthless and aggressive environments he came from.
Premiership player at both Essendon and Port.
Coached by both Sheedy and Mark Williams.
But if I remember correctly his computer skills and Powerpoint Presentation weren't quite as polished as Neelds.

He found himself under the pump big time in his 1st few years at Richmond and when the vultures were circling in 2016 he stated to the that he had at his disposal the best list he'd had since he'd been at the club and wouldn't be going unless shoved.
We all thought he was dreaming and then come out and won the flag the next year.
Hats off to him.

Since he won that flag he's been a far more content man infront of the camaras.
Speaks with the relaxed authority a premiership under your belt brings.
Now he has 2.
Might turn into Clarkson soon and we'll all be chasing Richmond assistants.

I wonder what a big club like Hawthorn can afford to pay their specialist coaches..?

Would love to get Yze back to the club but I’d take a guess that he’d be on a pretty hefty pay pocket compared to what we could offer.

why are we only looking at goal kicking, kicking is kicking. our players turned the ball over far more often all over the field with their poor disposal, so maybe broaden your remit and look for some who can teach all of our players how to kick.  maybe in a couple of years time we can then get a coach to teach them how to tackle and chase.

If you make the comparison with us, May is the lock down FB, Lever the intercept marker, Hibberd is the run and gun. We're just missing the designated kicker and general. Perhaps Jones can play that role in 2020?

Great comments though, mate. Thanks for sharing. Actually a very nice guy is Damien. Fascinating hearing how Hardwick and Buckley turned their careers around after internal reviews. Let's hope Goody can take heed of a similar review.

Some goal-kicking practice wouldn’t go astray. Might be better than wrecking your feet with stress fractures by doing too much running. 

Perhaps Jack Watts could teach them to kick straight?

Yes this was the doggies game plan a few years back. Kicking to space and players running onto it works well for fast runners. Most of our guys are too slow.
