If he hasn't lost his explosiveness/pace then I'd love to get him, either at 3 or 8. His height would make a big difference in our midfield where we aren't tall, and he can move forward.

Yep my mistake hadn't realised I typed 2nd. I meant 1st and I'd rather take 2 picks this year in the top 10. Since only picks can be traded now and not players I'm not doing the trade unless we know nobody will take who we want before pick 6

Why would you draft a player who will miss the entire first season and then take another to get back to anywhere near where he was prior to the injury?  He's also an insideish mid, albeit a versatile one given his height.  We want another?  If we did why would you not look at Young or Flanders as immediate starters?

Regardless, i thought we were looking for outside run and finish plus small forwards?  

No way.  If we can't land Martin then it's Stephens and Weightman FTW imv.

Yes agree with the salary issue and I don't expect the FD to be negligent in any offer to Martin, who despite his obvious potential has shown little consistency or desire to get the best out of himself

Because you draft a player who will hopefully play for the next 15 years, not someone who will step in and peak from year one (palmer, Rich, Lewis Taylor).  Losing most/all of your first year is not the end of the world.  Cripps managed just 3 games due to injury, Max King was drafted with pick 4 following a knee reco and Hogan and Petracca played no games due to back and knee injuries.  Draft for the long term.

There's also nothing to suggest that he won't be back to his best when recovered.  If it were a broken leg, I'd have big reservations, but there are plenty of examples to draw on where players have returned from knee injuries to have exceptional careers.  If he's there at pick 8, I say we grab him with both hands.

If we didn't have the NSC history 39 (ie; we were discussing this as a Hawthorn, Collingwood or Geelong etc) i would be in total agreement in terms of a draft prospect!

I still disagree in terms of a 'what we need' perspective however.

And certainly not expecting him to peak from year one as a rookie 39.  I agree on that but at the same time, the longer his return is delayed, the longer it will take to get him up to speed at AFL level and for us to see any benefit (and whether he will cut the mustard  or not).

Other clubs in better positions with more recent success (and larger/more wealthy) can tend to carry and cover off these type of players better if things go sour (see the Hawks...Patton & Jeager.  Geelong with...Blease, Clarke.  The Pies with Dunn etc).

Kemp is Dangerfield like. That’s as simple as it gets.  Can win it inside.  Can burst clear.  Can play outside.  Can go forward and win it and kick the goal.  
Physically strong enough now to play AFL.  188cms 83 kgs. Built. 
His injury kills 2020 but providing rehab goes to plan then he walks in to our best 22 for round 1 2021.  
If we pass up, he’d be a steal down the order.  
Whilst I’d like to see Kemp drafted at 3, I know Young is a safe call at pick 3 and I’d support the safe call. Certainly if Kemp was there at 8, I’d be hoping JT is screaming out his name.

After seeing his highlights im sold on him. Has utility written all over - half forward or half back? Where would he play for us?

Kemp at 3 & Weightman at 8. We can't draft two players under 180cm with our 2 picks. We'd have to be one of the shortest clubs in the competition already.

He reminds me most of Elliot Yeo. Who's one of my least favourite players in the comp but also one of the best. I don't think he has near the skills or smarts of Bont, but the athleticism and size is very Yeo like.

I think pre- injury he was a definite top 3 or 4.  I'd still take him at 3 although it's possible he'll slip as far as 9.  He won't be outside the top 10. He's too good not to take and he's worth waiting 12 months for.

Agree Swooper, he would be a genuine utility with explosive pace and good overhead skills. He'd be well worth the wait.

Bid on Green at 3 which GWS will match and take Young at 4. Then take Kemp at 9. I just can't justify taking a small forward in a top 10 pick. I'd take a future Bontempelli (Kemp) over a Jamie Elliot (Weightman) any day of the week.

The only problem with that Cc is that they rarely turn out to be the next X,Y,Z's. Hell, i even remember Sylvia being referred to as the next Ricciuto back when we drafted him.

There even referring to Green as the next Cripps and he was drafted only 6 years ago. We'll be talking about the next, next Bontempelli soon enough.

Jason Taylor has high regard for Cody Weightman, but he also rated Spargo as a top 10 player in his draft year and look how that's turned out. Considering Weightman is a smokey it means he is an unknown quantity. You can do much more with Kemp who can play midfield and forward then a 177cm small forward that takes the occasional hanger in Weightman.

I also worry about midgets inside the top 10, but really, our entire drafting record is why we haven't won a flag since the draft was introduced.
