Melbourne midfielder Billy Stretch could be Gold Coast bound.

A report in the Herald Sun suggests the 23-year-old doesn’t have a secure spot on the Demons’ list, with the club telling him they will be waiting until after the trade period to organise a new contract.

They could get Stretch for little if Langdon goes through to preseason draft and Suns agree to pass on him.

This is great news y'all

We should definitely package up ANB and Stretch and swap for pick 2

No brainer

I wouldn’t put this past them.

Billy has all the traits of a perfect clubman but sadly none of the traits that are going to make him a great footballer.

It certainly is a bargaining tool, to use against the negotiating tool at the Dockers.

I'd actually be interested to see how he went at a new club. Unfortunately he's just been completely paralysed as a footballer at Melbourne. Unwilling or unable to take the game on and improve his skills by learning from mistakes and building confidence.

He played 16 games in 2016, averaged 18 disposals with 1 clanger a game and looked set to have a solid career.

Instead he loses his position to captain slow from Hawthorn and bounces in and out of the team and now is either out the door or the last man signed up.

all that might be true, but ultimately he isnt good enough, and like you i think it will be interesting to see what a change does for him, Great kid, great trainer, great work ethic, average footballer. we need to refresh those types.

In reality Stretch is worth no more than a fourth round pick so it's not that tempting for GCS.

If Billy can get a game up north he should go for it.

With Maynard, JKH and Stretch gone our back up midfield starts to look thin though.

And JKH has gone?

Jordon and Sparrow will be back with a year under their belts? KK if he gets the concussion under control, believe they have fixed that as they did with Jetta and Brayshaw

Consistency is Bill's issue, starts to get a run at it and the confidence then gets injured, fresh start could be ideal

Not really related to Billy, but I saw Gary Lyon was talking about the fact Gold Coast delisted Jarryd Lyons, who had a fantastic season for Brissy this year. They also gave up pick 2 for Lachie Weller and did a future pick swap that was a disaster.

They DO NOT deserve a priority pick, when they make dumb decision like these. It's seriously a joke.

He seems like a great kid, can run all day and has a terrific work ethic from all reports. Unfortunately he has bigger problems than inconsistency. He generally looks like a deer in the headlights at afl level and takes far too long to make decisions about what to do with the ball. He's not terrible or anything, just a bit too far off the pace.

Here's hoping a fresh start with a different gameplan works out for him

He's got great training standards, and seems like a wonderful young man but just doesn't quite seem to be an AFL level player. he's a very good VFL player at this stage.

if you as an outside mid can't break into a side with no outside mids consistently you're maybe just not quite up to it.

Posted

No issues but i do think billy's development was hampered by our obsession with playing too many inside mids. We saw jones and tyson battling on the wings at times when a fit billy was in the twos.

Like max said, our contested dominance in 2018 covered over the many cracks that were appearing elsewhere.

We ignored the role of the wing and it has backfired massively. Hindsight yes, but astute people realised that 6-6-6 would elevate the role of the wing.

Astute we were not. Now a wingman that had all the potential in the world (stretch was an under 18 all Australian) makes way so we can pursue another wingman who has been developed.

Great Guy

Elite trainer on every level I am informed

But he is just not quite AFL standard when it counts.

That’s how it is. Heard he was on the move at the same time i was told about Todd. Suprised it has taken so long to surface

That’s about it unfortunately, just no good come game-day. One too many dear in a headlights moments, reminds me of Toumpas.

Yep. Has had ample opportunities to cement a spot. Time to move on. We need to maximize every spot on our list

Will probably star at SANFL Level

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
