Sam Gray, to me, would tick off most boxes for us as a small forward and also come for a decent price.

The only problem for me is money.  Carlton seem keen on most people and have money to burn - if they miss on Jack Martin and Tom Papley, would they throw a large contract at him that we couldn't match?

Got the following message from a Port connected person back on August 29th when i was asking about some of their expected player movements.

reckon Karl might stay but Sammy go...

No mention of possible clubs, but he should certainly be in the mix as he is just what we need.

Would be an ideal replacement for Garlett. Might not do the magical as well, but he's way more consistent.

I'd be more than happy to offer up a mid 2nd rounder for him

They say that Melbourne cooled on Gray as it ramped up its efforts for free agent Magpie Jamie Elliott, but is now the time to consider him again.

I think we’re still in the frame for Butler. I cant see how the blues land him amongst papley, martin and betts. Nor can I see him squeezing in at the Saints now with Howard, Jones, Ryder and Hill all committed to them. Unless the Saints shed some players, he’s ripe for the picking

That being said, Gray isnt a bad option either and there hasnt been a whole lot of interest lately over him. I’d be approaching Butler over Gray imo

I reckon the Blues are going to be a serious side next year.

I hope I'm wrong, but adding Papley, Martin and Betts (despite his age) to that forward line, they are going to have x-factor and scoring power galore. Where you still beat them is the midfield. Still, Cripps can just about carry that midfield into the finals with their forward line.

I've always been nervous against Port that he could get a hold of us, fortunately it hasn't happened. Though he hasn't been in top form recently a change of Club could reinvigorate him and give us 2 years of class and experience. Definite yes from me!

I actually love the way they've built their list. Excellent spine, good ball users and outside run. They'll be a serious side 2022 onwards

As much as it pains me to say it, I really respect how theyve gone about it. Were bold with their list moves when many doubted them, and are now attracting some decent talent. Sacking Bolton was the best thing they ever did because god knows how much of a rabble they’d be if they were stuck on 1 win at the end of the season. They’ll be a quality side moving forward that’s for sure

I know you've been a big fan for a while, mate. It's taken me longer to come on board, but I love Curnow and McKay as a one-two punch and the rest of the spine is solid as you say. Adding a ridiculous bloke that averaged 25 possessions in his first season makes them even stronger.

They've brought in a lot of rubbish too, but the weight of top picks has finally started to yield results. And yes, they've picked well recently, but SOS wouldn't have got a job anywhere else if he wasn't SOS. He had an awful lot of misses at GWS, but we've been here before with this discussion. :P

They've nailed their mid to late 1st and 2nd rounders in Cripps, Fisher, Mckay and SPP to add to the mix, consider this now with the Kelly trade gone though

Pick 3  for 14, 17 and 24.

Hold out for 30 for Frost

Use 14, 17, 22 and 24 in the draft, you should end up with at least 3 from Taylor, Weightman, Sharp, Robertson, Bergman, Bianco and I would suspect one of the highly touted players to slide

Use 30 for Langdon

Great post as always mate. I'm glad I'm not in charge of making the call with what to do with pick 3. I go from one thread thinking we should trade pick 3 for an established gun and then I go to another thread like this and believe you're absolutely right about splitting the pick for a bunch of mid firsts.

Yeah, it’s absolutely depressing.

I hate Carlton.

How we got slotted for tanking and they didn’t still baffles me.

Have always had influence at HQ and one of the major $$$$ generators.

Inaccurate small forward - pass

Over his career he's kicked 83. 74 at 52.87%.

AFL season average for 2019 was 45.8%, so he's above average but not fantastic.

How is he from set shots? I remember him getting a lot of goals out the back when Port was running over teams a couple of years back.

His scoring accuracy % on AFL stats pro is 45% over his career and 40.6% if you remove his first season (67% over 7 games).

Way better than anything we have for his position. No brainer if he's cheap

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
