Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Jones Re-Signs for 2020

Jones with a full pre-season under his belt having trained in a new role (hopefully HFF) will still play enough games to get to 300.

But if we have any better luck injury wise, I'd be surprised if he doesn't play a game or two at Casey

If Jones gets a game next year it should only be to cover serious injuries and we have gone backwards. Loyalty means sheeit when you finish 17th IMV.

there was no one at VFL level he was keeping out in 2019.. same with Lewis.

It was a relatively easy decision club wise to give him another season. The pay drop and contract term is probably the strongest message.

Hopefully he does spend a fair time at Casey which means we have found his replacement

Jones is still in our best 12 - 18 players.  And that's if they're all fit and healthy.  We've got a list full of C & D graders who have never been any good and probably never will be.  List cloggers.

In fact,  I'd add a couple more Jones types 'to' the team.  Even if it was only for a year or 2.  Those concerned about 1 spot out of 47 are overplaying the value of 1 spot.

In any given year the list is often clogged up with non achievers often replaced with a new batch of non achievers.  Not just our club either.  The overall depth of talent in the AFL is quite shallow.  Good players are hard to find.  Older experienced types should be kept on instead.  Not all obviously but again,  we often bring in delisted free agents and they do nothing.  Better the devil you know.

And Jones isn't the reason why we only won 5 games.  The whole team & FD more like it.  Everyone.

The overall list is well below par.  We can ill afford to lose any more experience.

Why he isn't playing forward is baffling though.  He fights hard for the ball and is an excellent kick for goal.  Which is something that none of our forwards showed this year.  Fritsch if he played there all season being the exception.  Petracca if he could kick straight.

Jones in the trenches? The epitome of losers mentality. The record speaks for itself. In all our last quarter capitulations this season he’s the first to go MIA.

There are a few MIA well before mentioning  Nathan Jones. You must have a short memory.  PLEASE!  I cannot remember  you having anything good to say  about any player. Can you remember saying anything good?  Short memory.

Can’t think of many critical comments for others than for him and occasionally Viney. Last player I was very critical of was Hogan. I am generally quite positive with the rest of the list. Those two deserve criticism because they are leaders who don’t lead especially Jones.  If you could be bothered, feel welcome to trawl through my history and be proved wrong.

Its interesting the PR made no mention of the captaincy.  It seems odd because a contract would include the club, sponsor, media responsibilities and income that go with the role.

It suggests that:

1) Jones will not relinquish the captaincy.

2) He will relinquish the captaincy and it will be announced at a later date

Club / Pert etc might be thinking it's best to put a little space / separation between the horror that was 2019 (related Co Captains) and the hope / optimism they need to build for 2020 (Big Maxy) LH.

Bit of water under the bridge. Heal a few wounds, then give Maxy some clean air and a fresh start into 2020.

I agree, I think an announcement of him relinquishing the captaincy won't come until after the Grand Final and we're getting into trade/draft period.

If (I hope) Gawn is give sole duties that will happen late 2019/early 2020, as you say to allow a bit of space between the regimes.

Agree.  The B&F is Sept 30 which I  thought might be a good time to announce any captaincy changes.

According to Viney the next day the players get their off-season fitness program.  Also memberships go on sale then.  So, my thinking was Oct 1 would be a good day to start afresh on all fronts.

If not then, I certainly hope captaincy changes (if any) are announced in November when players return for start of preseason, rather than Feb/march which has been the practice in recent years.  I just think that if Max is to be a co-cap he needs to be the face of the club over the summer.

I think we all agree that NJ has been a warrior for the MFC especially during some dark times over many years, however, the thought of giving him another year or two just because 'we owe him' is just rediculous. To me anyway it shows a clear indication that the clubs culture is not about to change dramatically in the very short term. That's a real concern.....

Its only me but when I think of captains & good respected leaders, I think of Selwood, Hodge, Hurn, Cotchin, Pendlebury, Davis & Fyfe. If you think Jones is in this category, then that's fine, but maybe I know nothing about footy.

Also the selection of the captaincy is & always has been finalised at the conclusion of preseason & I don't see any changes to that process, however, in saying that, like many I see Max as the obvious sole captain. We have far greater issues to address than who is going to be the 'face of the club over summer' & it wont make any difference to the players during that training block & I would imagine that the majority of the players regard Max as a leader anyway.

Time to get real.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
