Thought Dec should have been developed as a follower in the mould of Steph Martin. Reasonably agile for a big man, and decent skills..

Problem with that is being behind the best ruckman in the game in Gawn. Agree that he should have been given a run later in the season.

Hope he enjoys whatever he decides to do from here, and tell him thanks for his efforts. You and the family should certainly be proud.

Thanks for your insights mate.

Good luck to DEC had his chance, in the cut  throat of AFL footy, as a rookie and a  mature age player they have to have a really good first game.

Thanks for taking us on the journey. All the best to you and Dec, and if Dec’s footy journey does continue, at whatever level, I’d love to hear it.

This year I have questioned why I come on this site given all the anger and abuse directed at fellow posters and the club in pretty much every post, but I realise it’s because of posters like you who can share a journey.

it would also be great if we as posters, could accept that for a myriad of reasons some players don’t make it in the end, but taking potshots at players at a personal level says more about our own anger management issues than anything else.

Thanks @Drunkn167 for you contributions to the Casey game threads & the Demonland Podcast with Casey match reports. Your detailing of the journey of a young player on the cusp of selection and then finally the day in the life of a family getting to watch their loved one play his first game was extremely insightful.

Dec should be proud. He achieved what every poster on this site dreams of. And he has a 100% win record.

I wish you, Dec and the whole family all the best and I hope you continue to post and provide updates in the future.

one of my dad's best mates played one game for the Dees back in the 60s.

his favourite saying goes - I remember my last game for the dees..... ( a bus trip to the cattery....) - he never tells anyone it was also his first! hahaha

Declan could follow along with these wise words

The vast majority of us here could only even dream of playing  one game at AFL level (let alone in a MFC victory) so having you help us share Dec’s journey has been an inspiration.

Thanks drunkn

You had your chance for a free drink on Demonland. What a difference a year makes.

I should have taken the opportunity, I think it’s going to be a while before another win like that.

Thank you Drunkn on so many levels.

I was lucky enough to meet you at a VFL match and like Dec with his football you with your heartfelt postings have enriched all our lives.

Please don't be a stranger and enjoy the journey. When the time is right share a little of Dec's life post MFC.

To you both and the family... best of luck

Well done to Dec, fulfilled a dream every kid has growing up and did it well. His epic clearance was a highlight in an otherwise horrible season.

Wishing you and the rest of the family the very best. On the plus side, you never have to come to Demonland and read all this trash again... but we would love you to!

That's a cricket scorecard under your post @Drunkn167!

I've enjoyed reading about the journey you and your brother have had at MFC. Felt like weve shared it with you.

You have opened up and been very generous with your time and energy. Much appreciated.

All the best.

Enjoyed watching Dec at Casey and chatting with your Dad

Nearly ever time I approached the 1/4 or 3/4 huddle Dec was getting praised by the Coach

Really believe he deserved a better opportunity in The Seniors

But I’m sure he will get plenty of offers to play on at some level

I posted this else where but thought it deserved it’s own topic

Well boys, we knew this day was coming a long time ago and we've come to terms with it. Truth is Dec was a bit over football anyway, to be putting in all that blood, sweat and tears to not be playing regular senior footy isn't easy.

That being said, the family and I will be forever grateful to the Melbourne Football Club for giving Dec the chance to live out his life long dream, and he got that chance on a sunny afternoon at the MCG. Not only that, but they won a close game, and himself having an impact on that result (his centre clearance for those who remember) He and us will never forget it.

To everyone at Demonland, since I first started posting here 5 years ago when Dec started playing some decent footy at Casey, thank you for all your kind words. I have had a great time being able to share this experience with super passionate supporters which are sometimes hard to find. I have sincerely enjoyed the conversations and experiences I've had over the years and I'll be sure to pop back in ever now and again as I now and will always bleed Red and Blue.

Dec's career wasn't the most glamorous by any stretch but only a very small percentage of people who ever play our beloved game get to say they played in the AFL.

Cheers everyone, and have a drink on me!

Yes Drunkn

Dec has achieved more than many and his dedication and perseverance did reap some small reward.

His game was memorable and it's a pity he could not become one of our regular top players.

I hope he continues to ply his trade and can enjoy the game at any level. I also hope both he and you continue your passion for the red and blue through more than occasional visits. Your comments tinged with the insiders perspective we're always wonderful and in no way condescending to us less favoured . You also never betrayed any insider confidence although I imagine you had some.

Please continue to give your forthright opinion as I always welcomed it.

We have had many years of disappointment but indeed our hearts still true, I am hoping you both will provide us with some personal thoughts as we all continue our journey.

You will always be welcome in Beechworth and if you identify yourself at Tanswells I am sure there will be some crazed demon supporter to shout you that drink. I hope it's me.

Actually, Dec can go one better. He can talk about his first game and talk about his last game (but not mention there were none in between).
