no...rediculous.

We already have Baker, Dunkley, JKH, Stretch, Brayshaw, Hunt, Jordan, Kolodjashnij, Sparrow, C Wagner

we don't need Amon, Langdon or Hill.....we just need to administer a game plan where these players are utilized effectively.

K Amon : averaging 19 disposals @ 75% efficiency & 4 turnovers per game & .5 goals per game.

KK - broken. As is Vanders.
Sparrow - inside mid/half forward/half back - a see ball, get ball type
Jordon - maybe, too early to tell, he's so young and raw next years only year 1 for him really, can't expect anything next year
Dunkley - not a winger, average pace, average fitness, average skills
Hunt - absolutely not a winger, looking more like forward or nothing
Brayshaw - not a winger!

That leaves us with that actual wing options:
Baker - worth another 1 year deal but he has to get fit or he can't play wing
Stretch  - just refuses to take on difficult kicks or to tuck the ball and run with it, could be kept but would only be depth
JKH - actually has shown flashes now 2 years in a row late in the season that he could be an ok depth wingman, but he's small, he's afraid of contact, he's injury prone and he's shaky with the ball, there's a lot of negatives
C Wagner - not really a natural outside runner or user, depth in a variety of roles but probably best across half forward

What's your current plan for the wing if it's not new players???

If it's not experienced players then it's going to be either the draft, going with kids or injured players or going with guys on the bottom of the list in Baker, Stretch and JKH.

My biggest concerns with Amon and Langdon are that they are both small and both have had career best years and will be at top of their price range. Amon would've been a hidden gem last year.

We might have to rotate Fritsch on to the wings to cover them against certain sides or hope for a return from KK, Vanders or someone like Jordon comes on as a forward/wing option. Or Melksham gets back to his wing game.

But in terms of fixing our problems with run then Langdon is a must and Amon is a nice piece too who also brings good skills.

They’re both bigger than our most recent wing options in JKH and Stretch

Would happily have both on our list and reckon both would be locks for best 22

Would be 6th in our list for average metres gained in 2019.  Has pace and a 74.3% DE and is rated as elite for Goal Assists.  I think he'd get a game.

Good stats. Seen him play?

i've watched a fair bit of amon, as i have a soft spot for the pear

he's alright; he'd definitely be in our side for the entirety of this year

would add pace and finishing ability

he's had better years than this year in the past

third rounder, as he's out of contract and wants to come home

Yep, wouldn't have been interested 12 months ago, but he's definitely improved and probably still has more development in him.  Is definitely an outside player, but he isn't soft.  Along with Langdon fills a void in our list.

I am not sure what games you watch but none of those players out performed anyone.

You mentioned Langdon in your post and he is a massive upgrade on all those players besides Brayshaw.

The game needs tweaking but our issue is the majority of our players are ball getters and therefore when we do get they have no runners to give it to.

I'm not sure which games you've been watching but surely you don't think our mid field group has performed well this season? Again I respect everyone's opinion, bit I see that we have ample outside runners & some with outstanding efficiency, however, Goodwin in his wisdom, chooses a game plan & game style NOT to utilise these players & their strengths.

The problem sits with the coaches & you would think they would have the resources, knowledge & intelligence to understand this!

Unless they change their game style quickly, it wont matter how good the outside run is, they will be in the same boat next year.

Fair enough, I may have missed his highlights. I had been a bit disappointed that he didnt go hard enough. Although I did see he played well a couple of weeks back.

Fritsch's only instructions for next year should be to never leave the forward 50. 100% agree with the rest. Amon at the least provides better depth than JKH, Baker or Stretch plus cover if we can't get a better winger through trade/draft or KK or Vanders up and running.

I think I'm with most here, Amon would be fairly cheap and worth a punt. Better than Stretch and miles ahead of JKH who has surely run out tickets to ride by now. He's been tried and tried again, and then again and again for good measure and doesn't cut it (unless we want to continue being mediocre/abysmal).

Agree.  Amon for peanuts is a good option

Let's be honest - most players for peanuts could be considered a good option.  Getting someone in for a nothing pick is a win-win.

The issue being Amon's going to take a decent contract especially if another Melbourne side along with Port have a contract for him. My guess is the Hawks might be keen if they aren't getting Coniglio and Hill is off to the Saints. And Port are going to want a good pick to. The idea that he's available for peanuts is wrong.

When we get some key forwards back in the side we'll have to get Fritsch up the ground at times. The combination of 2 tall forwards, Melksham, Petracca and Fritsch is too many attacking players without enough defensive pressure and tackling. It's not a bad thing, we might finally have some versatility and options for the coaches to work with.

I like the idea of Langdon and Amon on the wings with Young at half back if we don't get pick 2. We can't be too choosy with wingman we have none.

Adding three wings would depend on the prognosis on KK and VDB... hurt us a lot this year those two being out.

Posted (edited)

So we seem to be going all out to recruit some decent wingmen to fill an obvious void.

Watch us pay overs and begin celebrating, ................................. Then the AFL does another 6-6-6 and abolishes the wing position to "Enhance the spectacle"

How many wingmen do we intend on selecting in the side?

If we were to recruit Amon along with Langdon, we’d need to then delist 3 or 4 wingmen just for list balance.

Current fit AFL quality wingmen: 0

Assuming Vanders and KK aren't going anywhere we still have Stretch, JKH and C Wagner as expendable players if we sign better options.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
