They were a young side on the up.
Thomas was sacked by an alcoholic President with a vendetta who was also coked up to the eyelids.
If they didn't get the injuries they would have rolled us in the final for sure.
Gehrig going down was massive, Hamill on 1 leg too.

Sacking[edit]

After many injuries during the 2006 season, St Kilda finished sixth after the home and away season but were beaten in the elimination final by Melbourne. Injuries to Fraser Gehrig, Robert Harvey, Justin Koschitzke, Raphael Clarke and Xavier Clarke during the game, as well as the underdone Aaron Hamill and Max Hudghton, led to the Saints exiting the finals after leading for most of the match but being unable to run the game out. They finished the season in eighth position, which was not considered good enough by the club's president, Rod Butterss.

On 12 September 2006 it was announced that Thomas would no longer coach the club as a 'mutual' agreement. Thomas, however, maintained that the club had asked him to leave by sacking him and while he had accepted, it was not completely mutual. [2] The decision was a shock to the football world considering that Thomas was only the second coach to lead the Saints to three consecutive finals series. It is not known why he was sacked, but many factors include the controversial match against Fremantle in Round 5, 2006 in which the Saints were stripped of two points following a hearing the following Wednesday, which ultimately cost them a top-four spot and the double chance, the long-term injuries to Justin Koschitzke, Aaron Hamill and Fergus Watts and starting the season with two interstate trips in four weeks.

Thomas has shown no interest in ever coaching another AFL club.

I don’t recall Badloss (previously  known as Goodwin in 2018) having any particular relationship with MFC prior to his appointment. So Nev I am not quite sure what you are alluding to.

Thomas was a very underrated coach

The players loved him. Rod Butters spent years off his dial. He lived not far from me, and was a sad figure when i last saw him.

From what I have heard (not trying to pass it off as gospel), Goodwin, Viney and Mahoney are a bit of a boys club, and not long ago a current players parent referred to team selection and the like as "Goody's boys", so in my mind there's still a bit of the same thing going on even if some of the names have changed. I'm more talking about the mentality of it rather than saying it's an MFC old boys club. If that makes sense?

Time for the club to lead the competition.  Put Lyon in as Head of Coaching for 3 years.  Goodwin Matchday.  I won't stomach Goody's press conferences in 2020 with same "frustration....I believe in this group...connection".  Ross can take the pressers.

 

Lets get the Titanic back on track.

 

Ignore the simpletons who just want pretty footy.

 

Truly continue the Roos rebuild...or start again.

He most certainly knew some of the 'crew " here at Marvelous Melbourne. A relationship with the club? No...with people ? Yes.

I dont see Ross being a fit with us in any shape or form. The Giants if not keen on persevering with Cameron might be interested in him perhaps. No idea what his ( Cameron) contractual status is.

I don't see his personality working in the capacity of an assistant coach, but has apparently expressed interest in becoming a GM of football at some stage, so if Mahoney is changing his focus maybe that's something worth considering though i think we'd be better off going experienced there with Balme, Walsh etc

Yes but they are not about to sack him when he has three years of a contract to go. Mahoney would have been part of the group that gave him a three year extension in February. Always thought that was looney tunes. If they sack him now I want everyone involved in extending the contract to follow him out the door.

bizarre sacking.  The club goes into a re-build and now look to be improving greatly at 7-8.  injuries derailed their season from there.

There must be more to it.  I reckon the amount of players wanting to leave is the main reason.

I canned the Neeld appointment when Garry was salivating on the phone with Mick.

I could see why the club extended Goody's contract as I thought Pyke was a dead man walking 12 months ago.

 

I don't say things to get taken seriously, but many of the club's decisions over the journey, backed by simpletons, have been one continuous loop of a joke.

 

Fact is that Goodwin is doubting himself big-time.  He is looking in the mirror every day and asking 'what can I do?'.

 

Ross as Head of Coaching puts us in a position where we are at last not following; the pressure eases on Goodwin and our investment is not lost in Goodwin.  Goody is 3 years away.  He needs to clear his head.

 

The supporters universally want Roos back.  If you can't get the original, then his clone is the next best thing.

 

But the club and more importantly its supporters, avoid tough unpalatable decisions.  This is one opportunity.  Pert knows Lyon back to front.  Roos knows Lyon back to front.  Goodwin is doubting himself and crying for help.  The players need less confusion.

 

Ross ticks every box.

 

Ross will jump right now at accepting unders.  She who hesitates is lost.

Seems very strange for them to announce this now, as I'm not sure what's to be gained from the speculation and attention Freo now faces heading into their final game.

Lyon at Melbourne? Not sure. Lyon doesn't seem the type to sit comfortably as the 2IC or the like, it would have to be Director of Coaching with 51% decision power.

With Mahoney et. al. now having backed Goodwin, I think they need to run with him as The Guy, as opposed to 'The Guy under Ross Lyon' or worse, 'The Guy until Lyon takes over'. I think the way Lyon left St. Kilda probably feeds into this narrative too.

Lyon could move into a Balme-type role, but what would that mean for Viney?

 

Just seems like the changes at Melb will be to those reporting to Goodwin, not to create someone that Goodwin reports to or a replacement of those he already does report to.
