I woke this morning with the realisation that I just can’t handle the disappointment any more. It’s too effing demoralising. For now at least, I will step back and concentrate my valuable time on other things and avoid anything football related for as long as I can. I won’t be renewing my membership in 2020 which has stunned my family but my decision is made. If I don’t post again, thanks guys for the humour, fellowship and debate. Take care. PD I'm very similar in age and mindset right now. I've been a Premium member ever since I returned to Melbourne 14 years ago. Out of all the countless disappointments we've had in half a century I think last night was the tipping point for me. Not even in the Neeld era did I consider stopping my membership. $650 a year gets me a pretty decent guitar. 1 1 Quote
Mazer Rackham 14,972 Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 So what happens to membership numbers when all the supporters from the 50s and 60s drop off the perch? It'll be like Wall Street 1929 4 3 Quote

Once I saw May, Petty and OMac were out and replaced by Chandler, Spargo and Stretch and we were fielding the shortest team in living memory I knew we would lose by over 5 goals. Where were the goals coming from? Nowhere. That much was obvious. 47 minutes ago, Dr. Gonzo said: This season was over months ago yet people are still outraged after each loss. I don't get it. The challenge will be in how they rebound next year, not next week. This rebound ... is it an automatic thing? It's just going to happen, simply because this season has been too bad to believe? People are looking for some small sign, some spark, in the short time left, that our coaches know what is wrong and are addressing it already and not waiting for the pre season. Something to signal that this imminent rebound is based on something concrete and not on blind hope. Meanwhile on the Richmond wikipedia page ... "After a Preliminary Final appearance in Frawley's second season, Richmond overestimated the strength of the list and settled for trading for established players rather than drafting youth. Over the next three seasons, the team managed just 18 wins." 2 Quote

But surely it could only help getting some external appraisal of their footy program. The players resolved to click into gear in this latter part. They simply haven’t Quote

Deecisive 1,709 Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 one more game and then no more pain this year In the light of a new day, i sit and reflect on last nights effort. had we kicked straight we would have had a close game, regardless of the many rubbish actions of our players throughout the game turning the ball over, etc. sadly against another bottom 4 side. I am not keen on blaming the coach for things that happen on the ground, but i do blame the coach for the players he puts out on the ground. Last night was another example of playing players who should not have been there, as we have seen time and time again throughout the year. while a new fitness coach is nice i would like to see more work from the skills coaches in sorting out players kicking, handballing, body positioning over the off season. Do we actually have anyone working with our players on how to setup defensively, as i dont know how many time all of our players get sucked into the contest and opposition players wait patiently on the outside. Or our defense kicks blindly 30 meters out from the back line to opponents who have no melbourne players near by. the kick the ball out of defense regardless of where it goes mentality is killing us. maybe it would be better to try to get a stoppage so that we can reset. i have hope that a couple of new recruits, a fitter team, possibly an easier draw and the loss of some players who dont deserve to be out there will have us having a much better year next year. and if you are not going to play preuss and others who are backups and possible future players instead of some ANB and Oscar and others then get rid of them, but remember that max cannot do it all by himself. so please stop concentrating on just getting midfielders and more defenders. you win games by kicking goals, not just by defending. 1 Quote

But I'm assuming it was much like the last month if footy, albeit with even fewer tall marking options Doc, it felt different from the recent (year long) disaster. A number of comments have compared the performance to a bad Neeld game, and I reckon that's about right. It was <hopeless>, totally lacking in cohesion, and with no leadership from the two captains. The son and heir didn't go - first time for years. And I can't say I blame him. Injury update: I slipped on some bastard's dropped hot chips and did my knee. Ice overnight and I reckon I'll be right for the pre-season. Quote

F$&@ You I am not going to buy a membership (renewal) next year in protest of how our Club has neglected and wasted the footballing careers of so many of our players since 1964. This year has been the greatest dread of all - close scrutiny leads me to believe that the Board and the FD are not really serious about success, just themselves and their little empires. The current plans backfired at the end of last season, re-confirmed this season in a glaringly obvious way and provide no indication that continuous growth has been or will be pursued. One summer layoff is not long enough to re-build, re-stock, re-train professional footballers whose practice and development regimens are akin to 'kick-to-kick' runs and giggles. Haven't seen a second of the game but chime in with pithy comments 'what does anyone expect' I'll tell you. We expect effort. We expect running, chasing and tackling - not too many skills required there. We expect to see what Simon is doing with a game plan that has been useless all year. There is nothing there whatsoever that anyone can hang their hat on. Not a spark. Just disharmony, no direction and probably worse is the same cr*p dished up week after week. Goodwin is clueless. The coaching panel is in complete disarray. The players are in complete disarray. There is no leadership. IN fact it looks like the rimours of a split between two opposing camps is about right - they're playing that way. DOn't care for each other, don't lead to the right spots, can't cover their men. Sam e old same old. We've won 5 games, 3 by less than a goal. It's pathetic and frankly looks beyond redemption. 2 Quote

PD So many of us are having the same emotions PD. Last year spirits were lifted after many years of hapless performances on and off the field. We were lulled into a belief that the great efforts of PJ and Roos were paying off. And then 2019 happens. The coach changes the script from journeys to learnings and connections but the players have not bought in and the fans can feel it. There are just so many issues to be addressed it appears we are back where we started. Although l do not believe that emotive response to be right. We need to make changes in the game plan and fitness regime and we need to bring in some cattle with speed. We have the nucleus of a top 6 team in 2020 but our bottom 6 players in every 22 we field is poor. After 6 decades of support, this year l too have lost the "hurt". I simply don't care as much as l did. The passion for success and dim fire of hope has been blown out of me. Despite this low, I will expect hard decisions to have been made and many backsides kicked over summer. Come March 2020, l hope to have my passion revived and confidence lifted. I am looking forward to say 2019 was the abberation, not 2018 (a serious doubt that has emerged). After the sad 2019 chapter is finally written and closed, rekindled hope remains as the underlying trait of all true Melbourne Football Club supporters. MFCSS remains as strong as it has ever been. 1 Quote

We’re in a poor position as a footy club. But we’re going to work really hard at getting ourselves out of it and the only way we’re going to do that is together. We’ve got a lot of work to do. There is no doubt we’re in a poor position right now. “I think it is a bit reflective of where we’re at. Right now, where we sit now is in a really poor position. Our supporters deserve better. We are going to fight our way out of this and we will eventually make them proud.” The guy really struggles with the spoken word. 1 Quote
