Casey is a growing area that caters to a lot of migrants, none of whom are interested in Australian Football. With City Football Group now in competition for supporters in the area, and the A League moving to a winter sport, there is no better time than now to cut the cord with Casey. It’s a waste of time. 
 

Soccer will have far greater success in that area than we ever will.

    European migrants took up Aussie Rules because it was the only thing going at lunch time in the playground.

    These days African, Middle Eastern, Asian and even white kids are more likely to play basketball or soccer at lunch, and can watch Liverpool, the Lakers and the Mumbai Indians on tv just as easily as watching the AFL. Just like music, tv and other hobbies sport is going to be more fractured and less of a monoculture as society becomes more global and connected by the internet.

    Houli and Saad might be the only practising Muslim’s in the AFL. Aliir and Chol only Sudanese guys getting a game. 3 recent recruits in this draft in Davies, McInnes and Downie who are half asian but given 12% of the Australian population is Asian that’s a tiny fraction. Lin Jong and Peter Bell still come to mind as Asian afl players. It’s increasingly difficult for the afl to capture these audiences.

    Not quite that ancient Cards! The Sullivans TV series covered the period 1939 to 1948 so I've learnt. (Must say I didn't watch it at the time). I was a baby-boomer of the early 1950's so by the time the 1964 grannie came around I was wearing stovepipe cords, desert boots, a duffle coat and getting excited about the Mersey sound and the Stones. Hardly the Sullivans turf.

    My comment is based mainly on funding. Hard to see who will pay to maintain both a training ground and Casey. Why wouldn't you play future VFL matches at the new training ground near the MCG.

    Because we haven't got any timeline yet but when it comes that will be addressed.

    This is not just a Casey issue, the AFL has head in the sand about the drop in participation rates of Boys between 12-18 years old.  Auskick and the massive growth in female participation have boasted numbers.  You think the quality of AFL is bad now wait a few more years the talent pool is shrinking.  Cricket is growing rapidly due to the large number of migrants from the Sub Continent calling Victoria home, you will see in particular in the outer rim many local footy clubs struggle and ovals being allocated 12 months a year to Cricket.

    AFL clubs have zero interest in developing players in these areas all they are concerned about is selling memberships.

    It's common knowledge. city have no supporters either in Manchester or in Melbourne. 

    A more apt comparison would be Gawn v Jamieson (Melb city captain apparently, i had to look it up). 

    A-league is a shambles and has been for years. No competition to the AFL whatsoever. 

    Newer migrants gravitate to soccer. Second generation to other sports. I wouldn't be surprised to see an influx of African talent to the AFL over the next few years. No reason why, with a proper recruitment strategy second generation talent can't be attracted to the AFL

    Considering how quickly Abu Dhabi Private Equity FC have ditched their commitment to developing football in the northern suburbs I wouldn't be doing cartwheels down at Casey just yet. If they can't get the traction they want down there either then they are just as likely to up sticks again. They might leave behind a nice facility though for the locals when they do fly the coop.

    AFL is naturally shielded from the talent decline you mention because there is no external yardstick.

    For the those more international sports such as cricket rugby soccer swimming and even netball where we continually punched above our weight we are coming back to the pack as other countries develop centres of excellence etc etc

    As a school teacher, I’d have to disagree with you. I’ve worked in primary schools where soccer is king and others where it’s pure Aussie Rules. This is usually geographically dictated. City have plenty of supporters worldwide. Money talks and ....well you know the rest.

    Pert/Bartlett are on the new base close to the G ticket and I hope it happens. But  I just wonder if it doesn’t get up in the next few years maybe they or the next CEO/President might have to look strongly at Casey. Be an absolute massive call but maybe the sensible one given our current setup and ongoing endless search.

    Surely that is a ground somewhere between the G and Casey that could be developed. They have hitched their wagon to a very difficult to train horse. It may be their swan song.

    Interesting in the Article in the Herald Sun, Pert said due to covid we will be at Casey for 2021 because of the share arrangement at AAMI Park.  Interesting though our AFLW side is training at Goschs paddock, maybe the training times for AFLW doesn't see the Storm or Victory at AAMI park.

    Yet he said on the info night that it was because Casey has a better per surface and is much bigger. Seems like the story changes depending on the day and who is listening.

    Richmond (Tassie) tigers obvious rebrand to leverage off the new home in North Hobart (Richmond).

    I like the idea of a summer training base and for this year a training base. your away from everyone and sole focus is improving.  The Oval is in ripping condition and the new building out there looks great.

    While we have been over and over this in numerous threads....I have to agree.  Why weren't we involved with the redevelopment at Caulfield racecourse?   More room than Goschs/AAMI.  Local clubs involved.  Middle of Demon heartland.....I could go on, but as you said we have hitched to a different wagon.

    My Crystal Ball for 2021

    Demons have 10,000 fans at Casey for training session before Final.

    Now that would put a different perspective on things,

    The Club needs to make the facility enticing for supporters so they  spend several hours at when make the trip to Casey. A cafe or coffee cart, some memorabilia for kids, sausage sizzle and so on. It requires a different think as we likely wont get the supporters who just check training out for half an hour.. It needs to be an experience.

    Melbourne city have moved to Casey because they have no supporters. They said as much in their press release.

    Manchester City may have bought some titles but they have no supporters. I’m curious on what basis you say that they have. Qatar petro dollars is not all that alluring it would seem.

    Now if you had said Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern or Juventus I might entertain your argument.

    We can’t change venues every time one pops up. Casey has excellent facilities and the only thing to do now is find a city base. I’m guessing it’ll pop up in the dock lands precinct soon enough

    I guess it’s like how people say the MFC have no fans. When you start looking at the stats, you realise the reality. Anyway, this isn’t about City, but rather Soccer vs AFL. That’s the argument.

      Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

    • REPORT: St. Kilda

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
