Completely agree with Garry if Whitfield was at all gettable, but he is apparently not.

To add to that, did anyone readĀ Coniglio telling the story about Whitfield jumping around like a little fangirl when Coniglio told him he’d re-signed? Had to drag WhitfieldĀ around the cornerĀ to tell him away from others,Ā because he knew the reaction would give it away. Just a little story, but I think demonstrative of the strong bond between the upper echelon at GWS.

And you run the risk of chasing him and then having him re-sign with GWS.Ā  I know some might say that he is worth the risk, but then we've missed out on others who could potentially help to improve our side.

If we asked the question and he legit seemed keen, then I'd be happy to go all in for him.Ā  But it's never as easy as that.Ā Ā

Worth asking the question now, because we do have the high pick to offer. But I think there's no way he'll move, apparently doesn't like the idea of the 'footy fishbowl' on Melbourne and knows to get the best out of himself he's best out of Vic. One thing asking the question now might do is push his price up a little, meaning that we might be able to pry a slightly better player out if we end up splitting the pick.Ā

Whitfield is a beautiful player but I'm unsure how he likes it when it's finals hot.Ā  He was superb vs the Dogs but the Giants toasted them.Ā  He was invisible against the Lions when it was super hot.Ā  It will be fascinating to see how he goes vs the Pies.

Gaz thinking like a true Melbourne supporter. Have to throw everything at him next year!

I'd still get Tomlinson in and then work out the Whitfield offer when that comes around. No good missing out on a player who could hypothetically help us in 2020 to save money, and then Whitfield signs after round 11 next year. We can do some financial manoeuvring if it seems we are in with a sniff.

Players of note out of contract 2020

Fritsch

Petracca

Petty

Viney

Harmes

Hunt

Hibberd

JonesĀ

Im backing the club in to make the right decisions.

Not too sure you can even recover fully from an appendectomy in 10 days.

Are the Pies blessed?

Fall into the 4.

Play the Cats at their home ground.

Play the Giants with all Pies supporters at their home ground.

Play the Giants with Ward, Coniglio, Whitfield and maybe Greene out.

Noticed during the game that he was very troubled by what looked likeĀ aĀ fairly innocuous elbow to the small of his back. At the time I thought it was an after-effect of a previous knock; now I’m wondering if the appendicitis was already starting to flare up?

He was kneed in the kidney area in a marking contest shortly before.

Yes, that’s a better description of the previous knock I was referring to. That in itself would hurt like hell.Ā

Watching Blicavs lumber around hopelessly on a wing against the Tigers has me worried about Tomlinson. All the fitness in the world doesn't help you if you can't match the speed and agility.

Will be keeping a close on him tonight.

Ā

Is named forward tonight and will be interesting to see if heĀ plays there. Ā One of the initial rumours regarding our interest in him as being in the Tom Lynch (Adelaide) role of high, mobile tall forward. Ā That’s the position he was drafted for, but hasn’t been able to nail down at the Giants.

I know all our initial instincts are wing, but I think he could be a bit of a poor man's Jesse Hogan for us with his size and tank spreading our forward line like Hoges used to.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.Ā They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season.Ā Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table.Ā The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hopeĀ that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, MelbourneĀ captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atĀ Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.Ā  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aĀ career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),Ā nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.Ā

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
