The triangle of Land at the back of Goschs bordered by Punt Rd and Citilink...why are are we not trying to get that? You could build a big building there without much opposition....?  I mean like 6 stories no worries. Plus you could build over the on /off ramp that take citilink traffic on to punt rd. This building if you have a look would be as big as the space currently occupied by the Holden centre. ......and the Holden centre is not 6 stories.

Goschs is a great place to train and as close to the G as you'll ever get. I like Goschs a lot.

One has to wonder about how close the club is to the wheels of power. This plan had pipe dream written all over it from day 1.

Can't think of one group that came out in favour. Politics 101... perception and short term perception is where it's at.

The best spin is that it was an ambit claim and that we are now going for option B but you really have to wonder.

Obviously you either haven’t seen the plans or know how to read drawings!  I have seen the drawings (and as an architect I know how to read them)! The footprint of the proposal neither extends into Yarra Park nor eliminates the playgrounds. Further, it is of a lower height than the Pullman Hotel and residential and commercial buildings on the opposite side of Wellington Parade.  Nor does it “tower over” the street as, being on the South side, it casts no shadow and is lower than a fully-grown plane tree! Frankly, your comments are an embarrassment to the educated readership of Demonland! ?

I hope we can get as much support for our proposed facilities, from the Federal government ($15M) matched by the State government (another $15M) as the Lions are getting:

No way that will happen. The Lions have been training in crap facilities for years, Live up here and even where we are training in Maroochy is better than what Lions have. Also more seats in balance up here for election so that's where the money will be spent even though would love a facility for whole club in Melb.

Royal Park and Albert Park would be worth a look. They are designated sporting precincts.

A little further out is Fairfield/Yarra Bend park

Yarra Bend Park - Home of the Melbourne FC. Like it... but parking, facilities, direct transport services, locals' approvals, Council buy-ins and even political buy-ins or politicians' profiteering. There is a great deal against this idea - but it might be worth it if the MFC cannot gain sole occupancy of the traditional home of football, the MCG. The co-tenants had been given an opportunity to co-develop their existing facilities as (a considerable amount of) years traversed for co-tenancy of the 'G to exist and set-in like a plague. They became comfortable in this 'squatting' and in relative terms, did nothing to update, acquire or refresh their own (modest) stadium. A 5-year warning plan should be put into operation by the MCC - even if these clubs have to share a facility outside of the MCG - to pack their bags, move out, move on and get independent of the liability that they have created. More games at home for the Dees, I say. Less input from the vested interests of the AFL, I say. I sat, once, at the MCG Members Bar, enjoying a solitary beer before a game glad that eventually, after 24 years of waiting, my MCC membership came through. The irony of that situation was too much to bear - I was the only Demon supporter there! It was flooded with supporters from Richmond, the Filth, Carlscum. Quite at home, they felt. I let my Membership slip as a consequence.

The good news is that just about every Liberal held seat in Victoria has become marginal so, who knows, maybe some pork barrelling in East Melbourne between now and the Federal election might be a possibility.

The State Government usually seems ready to tip in money for AFL club training bases given the relationship they have with the AFL. It might not be all that prudent but the Grand Final is massive for the state and big blockbuster games and other finals in September certainly don't hurt. Our crowds for the Cats and Hawks finals would look good on any proposal about why we should be invested in. 

What we need to secure a nice grant is a story to tell to make it politically safer, particularly if it's in East Melbourne. The Tigers built an Indigenous centre. Essendon apparently have Paralympian training facilities. The Dogs just got granted a stack of cash and land and are redeveloping the Whitten Oval as an AFLW hub. Brisbane are also talking up the importance of a home for their AFLW side as part of their funding. That might be an angle for us to work in, but whatever it is we need to find community benefits.

Maybe I'm cynical, but that's why I assumed we announced our intention to get out of the gaming business. But I would have thought that's not in itself going to be enough and we should find some other genuine community benefit.

Simple difference is that it is Yarra Park which for many years has been seen as sacred ground. 

The pollies have no trouble backing "safe ground" but Yarra Park and environs is a hot potato. 

You may have forgotten that when plans were announced back in the mid to late 80s for the erection of light towers, there was a huge backlash from the local residents, community groups and greenies. That was over 20 years ago and pollies have become even more sensitive and cautious in making any decision that will get people off-side.

As there was for the Grand Prix and as there invariably is for just about anything these days.

It's the genius of the Tigers Indigenous centre. The people of East Melbourne/Richmond/wherever can't complain that they were widening their footprint on Yarra Park's anglo saxon so called sacred ground if the traditional owners have approved it on what they consider their own actual sacred ground. Checkmate greenies.

The Southern Stand rebuild...  we should ask to take over the AFL enclosed area as our own.

...and have the AFL move to say the wing of the Southern Stand... or to the flank area Northern side, to the east of the MCC's enclosure.

IMO we should control the Western (City) end of the Mcg... including behind the city end goals Lvl 1.

 

As the Richmond Station rail line  promenade is built, these should already be our areas.

Not sure why you would wait 24 years and then let your membership slip? ? You can’t have been there before a Melbourne game as the bar is always rocking with Demon supporters!

After being on the wait list for approx 13 years, it only took 2 attendances in the MCC to realise that it was too upper class for my liking.

I much prefer slumming it with the rest of my riff-raff brethren in the southern stand.

I hope Mr Pert is engaging with whoever is succeeding in extracting these countless millions of $s from the state government for the never ending development of the " tennis precinct " now scheduled to flow on to 2024

I also hope he is engaging with the " traditional owners '' of the land who are now so revered on the big game occasions at the MCG

I well remember when the MFC trained on an open oval on the north side of Swan St and it was the only development between the Yarra River and Punt Road on that side

I also well remember the development of the south side of Swan St for the 1956 Olympic Games.It too was pretty much public parkland enshrined to us by our forefathers apart from the Commonwealth land occupied by the Artillery and Engineers depots ( that's where our Vietnam conscripts departed from ) .When the freeway was approved ironically that land ( next to Gosch's Paddock  was acquired) and was transferred up the road to where Rod Laver Arena now stands as compensation.  

To the best of my recollection the MCC/MCG is administered by an authority which automatically includes the Premier

Just one of those past memories, on the day. Maybe it was half time but I lean towards pre-game in that haze of the passage of time. I was also transferred to Adelaide for a few years and then on to Queensland for a similar timeframe, so that affected my enthusiasm for Membership renewals.

Can I just say, as a MFC supporter, not having our own dedicated and owned home ground is my greatest gripe with the club and the AFL for being in this position. The AFL have pumped how many millions into other areas/expansion clubs whilst the MFC have gone from home to home, utter madness for the oldest football club in the land.

We need someone like Donald Trump to come in and be our club president next and literally withdraw us from the competition until it is sorted. All the other clubs should actually band behind our club to make this happen. When I drive past Richmonds home ground all I can think is that the MFC should have the same thing, cannot believe we dont. We are by a long long way the club witht he worst facilities in the entire league, the expansion teams have their own permanent grounds, how can that be?\
